View Full Version : Question on sensitivity matching?

I've been building a pair of cabinets to house the following systems for my basement:

1. One 2225H
2. One 2445H
3. One 2360 equiv.
4. One 2402 (8 ohm bullet nose)
5. Crossover (500, 5,000)

Anyway, the sensitivity rating for the 2" compression driver is very high - 111 db @ 1 watt, 3 feet.

Since the other two drivers in each pair do not have a really high sensitivity, will I have issues with this set-up; will attinuation be helpful - necessary?

Thx...

Of course you are. You are going to need to pad down the rest of the drivers to the lowest sensitivity driver. Typically that would be the woofer in a typical system.

Ok - thanks Rob.

When you say I will need to, "pad down" the high sensitivity drivers, I assume you mean I should install attinuators in between the crossover and the driver(s); right?

Yes the easiet thing to do is go for a fixed pad to get most of the attenuation and then have an L-Pad after that so you can have some adjustment.

If you are going active the attenuation is built into the crossover so you won't have to add passive pads.

You have to look closely at the crossover as well. The 2360 is a CD horn so if you use passive compensation you attenuate the midrange response typically with a series cap at the hinge point where the rolloff starts. Depending on the network used and how high you want the top end to go on the 2360 you may end up using much less attenuation than you would think. It's not just resistive padding, there is more going on than that using CD type horns.

Hi
The 2445 on 2360 should actually be linear to 12-16,000hz, and most people agree that the 2402 (and 2405) do not sound very good below 9,000hz. I haven't tried it yet (have the drivers), but I heard the 2445 on 2350 horns with 2402 crossed at 9,000, it sounded very good. No problems with sensitivity. I think you should definately crossover higher than 5,000hz

hello!

i have the 236o running with the 245o, and i cross over to the 24o5 at 9ooo hertz right now, too. before that i had it at 68oo, 72oo, 8ooo. i use an EQ for the horn and the woofer --> i can easily adjust the XO and speakersettings just like that because i got it all running with a digital-active XO (behringer). i can recommend it very much -LOTS of thing to try out very easy. downside (??) is you need lots of amps (secretly: yesss!!).
i will post some measurements, as soon as i find the time, in my thread here: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=21283&page=3
if you want, i can try out different things for you before you build the network (sparetime is a problem though, so it might take).

i dont know much about it, but isnt the bullet tweeter rolling off at about 16kHz? i think the horn alone, beeing properly EQued, can probably do that as well. why not try it without the tweeter? (yes i know its beautiful:applaud: )

just shoot me a pm if you need something, i will get back to you asap.

cheers,
an have fun!!
mikey

ps: the 236o horn is >GREAT< :applaud:
