In a thread about JBL tweeters it has been stated that good tweeters seem to cost a lot of money.

I am in mourning over the apparent demise of Audax, manufacturer of lots of fine sounding tweeters that didn't cost very much at all. What third party brands are still out there that have a good reputation for sound and value? Is Fostex good for tweeters?

For that matter, does JBL still have any qualified tweeters available for purchase separately? I realize that JBL offers very few transducers for sale any more.

Ya, the Audax tweeters are very good, and certainly a lot lighter than the 066.
JBL has one Ti tweeter, JBL Tweeter 052TI 74856X, I've seen on OCS web site that they say is a good replacement for most of the older JBL tweeters.I have never heard this tweeter. They sell it for just a few $ more than I paid for some of my 066s.

Thanks, Scott. I didn't realize that JBL's sound reinforcement gear had parts suitable for nice HiFi reproduction.

Ya, the Audax tweeters are very good, and certainly a lot lighter than the 066.
JBL has one Ti tweeter, JBL Tweeter 052TI 74856X, I've seen on OCS web site that they say is a good replacement for most of the older JBL tweeters.I have never heard this tweeter. They sell it for just a few $ more than I paid for some of my 066s.

It is listed as a replacement for one speaker I have, but I only paid $200 for the pair. Always the same quandary. A bargain is not a bargain if anything ever needs parts.

Even auctions on ebay aren't always cheap, when buying vintage gear.
I paid $100/ea for a pair of new 066 in '03. And each L212 I built cost $500/ea.
Bought a complete L212 system for $500 a year later.

Here is a titanium tweeter that they make that is used in the Revel Performa Series. They also supply many of the better JBL tweeters.

Thank you all! Peter, that tweeter, the TW 025 A20, is actually available here at Madisound. http://www.madisound.com/catalog/index.php?manufacturers_id=120 They have a few other Audax transducers as well, but I do not know if they still get new stock or if they are using what they already have. Madisound also carries many other good brands, including Fostex and Seas.

I can tell you the number of models Audax has marketed is very large. Here is their archives page from their French website. http://www.hautparleur.fr/

One I can personally vouch for is the TM 025 F15. They came with my Hammer Dynamics kit and sound great. http://www.hautparleur.fr/_audax/tm025f15.pdf I use them from about 9700hz up. They are a soft dome 1", neodymium, ferrofluid cooled, 94dB, copper clad aluminium voice coil wire, etc. Yet very small. Mine have a special small faceplate to minimize area. They are mounted in front of the cone in the Super 12. This design is also available in titanium, and in 4 ohm.

I am so happy to learn that Audax is not out of business. As for Madisound, I hope we buy a lot of product from them and keep them in business through these hard times.

Whatever the state of Audax currently or in the future, I have a back up plan. This is a poor photo taken by my iPhone in my garage with only the overhead light on, but I think I'm set for many years.

Well, that's a really bad picture, actually. I was sort of falling over when I shot it, so I left out a couple of stacks and chopped them off, too. There's some other goodies in there that I'll just leave to the imagination.
