I just got my "new" L-96s back from the refoam from a friend. Boy these things sound better (to me) than the L-112s that I am borrowing from him. The parts are nearly identical, but the main difference is that while the L-112 is a bombastic, loud and driving speaker with some good detail, the L-96 seems to be a very detailed sounding speaker that can get loud and bombastic, definetly similar but not the same. Probably a better match for my source (Techincs SP-10 Mk2, Musical Surounding Phonomena) , amp (First Watt F3 Clone) and software (jazz and rock). The L-112s are great speakers, but for me the L-96s are just a cut better.

Nope 12 inch stands for the L-112 and 18 inch stands for the L-96

I'd use the same stands for both, 18" preferred. You are right that they are the same speaker, even the cabs are nearly identical. Same crossovers too.

The 112 delivers the "California" sound with stronger bass. The 96 can do the same, but needs more power and higher volume. (minimum 250W amp)

I still think the 96 is the best of the lot, but the L86 is a very close second for balanced sound and detail. Every time I crank up my L86's, I'm amazed at how much they sound like the 96s.

If you want the California sound, you haven't lived till you have heard L150As. (also the same crossover)

L-96's, good unaided by themselves, best off of the floor.

L112's are fine, better with a sub added, picky about room.

L150A's, main speakers for a decade, now in storage box.

4430's, I have too many speakers, it's hard to let go.

To me the L96 is just a super speaker. I tend to agree with those that prefer them to the 12" 3 ways.
