I was reading the recent TapeOp, and I saw that Bob Heil uses JBL 4410s to test his pro audio gear. Apparently he has been developing some large diaphragm dynamic mics, which are kind of unique for a number of reasons. He didn't go into his reasons for using the 4410s, but I thought it was worth a mention that there are highly respected pro audio guys who still use these as their monitor of choice.

For those of you who don't know, Bob Heil invented the Heil talk box... you know, Frampton Comes Alive? "Do you feel like I do?" :) He also created a number of pro audio consoles and microphones, and he was the guy who supplied PA systems to acts like The Who.

David Gilmour of Pink FLoyd fame used the Heil audio box in a recent DVD, I purchased.

His first original talk boxes used JBL drivers. 2480's and 2482's.

...Apparently he has been developing some large diaphragm dynamic mics...Yeah. I've been using the PR22 for some time, and also have the PR20 and PR35 in my arsenal. Very interesting mics, and Bob is one hella nice guy to know and deal with!

He talks about that in the TapeOp interview. Apparently the first talk boxes were not boxes at all. They were contained in a bag or something like that. I'll have to refer back to the article.

He's a very interesting guy, especially on account of his willingness to experiment with spare parts and judge the results with his ears. I'm sure he has some sophisticated testing equipment at his disposal, but he seems like more of a tinkerer.
