Can anyone recommend an economical cartridge and stylus for a Thorens 160. Where would be a good place to buy?

I just bought 2 of these for my TD145 and TD160 from an outfit in NY, $92 shipped. Sound VERY nice for the price! If you are interested I will dig out the receipt.

Don, the M97 would be a nice match for those tables. Too bad the V15 is NLA. The '97 is the next best thing IMHO.

Hi Audiobeer,

Sorry to have not seen the original post a few days ago.

I've run mostly Grado's in my TD 160/160 mk. II/160 super with the original Thorens arms and an SME 3009 Series III. I've used from the FTE+1 to F1 to currently Blacks, Silvers, and Greens. In my experience, they have been very good performers, not terribly expensive, and fairly tolerant of warps.

For some, Grado's tend to hum with Thorens and other tables so YMMV. The nice thing is you can get pretty good performance for mild to moderate change and stylii are replaceable.

Unless you're really tweaking the table or going to a specialized arm, I can recommend Grado's to you easily. But there are nice carts from Shure, Pickering and AT that would merit your attention too.

Regards,

bart
