I have an old (Very old) Ampeg 4 X 12 bass cabinet. (No tags of any kind to assist me with age or type found here either) The speakers I was expecting inside were not what I found and actually I have no clue WHAT THEY ARE!

I have done vast searches and have only found speakers resembling these but not these.

Can any one here assist me please? Here is all they have on them:

Altec Lansing

Type 417 Dia-Cone

Part number 21425

16 ohm

Stamped on each basket: “391806”

Thank you SIR! If anyone can give me more assistance as far as min/max power handling for these I would really appreciate it. It is a sweet cabinet; The Bass sound is silky punchy smooth and robust then when experimenting I connected it to an instrument out on the back of a guitar cabinet playing lead through it (Strat out of a Dr Z) and was even more impressed!

I need to re-build the cabinet but these speakers are original, untouched and kick butt!

Who:blink:

I think that spelling is a typo ..
apparently a somewhat common misteak :D

Randy Rhoads (December 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_6), 1956 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1956) – March 19 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_19), 1982 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982)) is a guitarist who played with Ozzy Osbourne ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Rhoads

"Randy was inducted into the Guitar Center Rock Walk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Walk) (on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, CA), on March 18 2004. Guests included Dolores Rhoads, Kelle Rhoads, Rudy Sarzo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Sarzo), Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_Osbourne), Zakk Wylde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zakk_Wylde) and Yngwie Malmsteen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yngwie_Malmsteen). In a 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006) Guitar World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_World) article, it was mentioned that Rhoads' last name was mistakenly spelled "Rhodes" on his plaque, and by the time it was discovered, there was not enough time to correct the mistake.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Rhoads#cite_note-3) It has since been fixed."

Hi Heather , Yes I know who he is but Who realy cares about what a dead guitar player liked or did not like.

99% of famous rockers play what ever product they are paid to play. Like somehow playing thru that speaker is going to make you sound like
Randy Rhoads.

You know you can have Eddie van Halens guitar, amp and stomp box,s but unless you have Eddie's fingers your not going to sound like Eddie.:scold:
Close maybe with a lot practise but not 100%

As well you have to find your own tone, that's what it's all about.:rockon1:

S'matter, you opposed to a good old-fashioned advertising strategy?? :D

How many Strats has Hendrix sold to date ??

How many JBLs sold by nearly-deaf Pete and his chums ...?

Does anybody have a clue as to the power handling of these speakers originally? (I say originally due to their age I will back-off that conservatively to be safer) I am setting the cabinet up for either 8ohm stereo or 4ohm bass or guitar but I want to ensure when I drive it I stay within it's tolerances.

I have a home recording studio and many tube amps coupled with some very good high SPL microphones; I want to drive the cabinet for the best sound but within its safe parameters.

I would rather start with an idea rather than just moving up the sliders on 5000 watts as voice coils weld and paper flies.

Thanks,

Romn

Says its 75 watts......specs are for an 8 ohm version...not sure about the "dia cone" part.

Thanks Tim,

That is the problem; I would also assume that due to this speaker is similiar but I am still unsure if they are talking about the same speaker I have. Very curious!

yes it was a typo...

in actuality, i was just throwing out something that i thought may have helped him in his search for info regarding the driver he has...

IME sometimes when searching the internet for a specific speaker or component, and you come up with nothing... it makes sense to search for quasi-related items...

for instance, googling "Randy Rhoades Altec" comes up with this link...

http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:RL2kOTYiFOkJ:www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-597141.html+randy+rhoades+altec&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us

my guitar teacher did a ****load of research on it and gave it to me...lemme go find it...okay here it is:

randy used 3 main guitars with ozzy. his main guitar was a creme colored 1974 gibson les paul with the stock pickups that was purchased for Randy by the members of Quiet Riot during the recording of Quiet Riot II. the second guitar is his famed Karl Sandoval polka dot flying V. This guitar was made by Karl Sandoval in 1979 for Randy and was equipped with Dimarzio PAF pickups. his third main guitar was his custom made prototype Jackson RR shark fin guitar. This guitar was outfitted with Seymour Duncan Jazz pickup and Seymour Duncan distortion pickups.

randy used 2 1970 JMP 100 watt super lead marshall heads and a 1979 100 watt white anniversary super lead head. these heads were never modded and had no master volume on them and were very bright sounding. to get more distortion out of the heads he used the MXR distortion plus pedal. even though his heads were bright to begin with, randy pushed the envelope even further by using an MXR 10 band graphic equalizer with the mids and highs pushed almost all the way up. Randy's wah pedal of choice was the VOX V846 which he used very sparingly. the two other effects he used were an MXR stereo flanger and an MXR stereo chorus. randy used marshall 4x12 speaker cabinets with 100 watt altec 417-8h speakers. randy used medium picks and his guitars were strung with medium guage strings 9-42.

whew that was a lot of typing! hope that helps!

-Kyle

granted the info is from the internet, so further due dilligence may be needed... but searching on 'somewhat related' items/people is a way to find more info IMO

:)

and i did not imply that it would make him sound like RR used to sound, did I?
or was that an extrapolation of my typed reply on your part?

Yeah, old thread, but .... worth a try ...

Have had a 417-8C and a 418 for years and they just follow me from amp to amp. Just bought a pair of 417As for my 2X12 converted Super Reverb -- haven't been able to turn up any specs on the 'A' series units -- any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
