Hi All,
Sure would like your options and compairsons of these two speakers.

I was watching these L65's on ebay. Looks like a nice pair. At $500 now, with 12 hours to go.

I have pretty large room, about 35 x 35. One pair of 4311's and one pair of 4312A's. Each on their own Carver M500t amp, with 250W per side going to each of the four speakers.

I love the sound, and the four speaker set up fills room pretty well. But not where I want to be. When I want to really crank it up when we have a group of friends over - it's just not getting to the sound pressure I want.

I know horn drivers are where I really need to be. I can't swing the $$ now.

If I take baby steps - my question is would and how much of a step up are the L65's from my book shelf monitors?

The dB spec's are the same and they both have 12" drivers. L65's have bigger cab's (not much) and better tweeter.

Please share your thoughts -
If I were able to A/B two L65's and two 4311's at high volume - what would be the comparison?

Thanks All,
Steve

The 4311's will be a little flatter (accurate) to my ears. The L-65s are almost like listening to the 4311s and then hitting the loudness button on a vintage reciever.....the Highs and the bass gets a little more emphasis on it and now you have L-65s. To some that's a good thing. To the audio pureist it's a bad thing. I let my ears make the decision.

Those L65's will likely go well beyond $500.

I've had L65's and 4311's in the house at the same time, and I'd say they are capable of about the same volume level with acceptable distortion. The limiting factor is the woofer.

I don't see how anyone can offer you any useful advice unless you are willing to say how much you are going to spend on the proposed upgrade, except, "Get a bargain on some good larger speakers."

That's a pretty large room alright!

If 4 - 12" are not doing the trick, you might want to consider 4 - 15" or 2 - 15" in horn loaded cabinets.

I was in the same boat as you and finally settled for 2 JBL 4560 Cabinets loaded with TAD 15". It was a dramatic improvement in impact over the same drivers in a 5CF reflex cabinet. The sub frequencies suffered but I am overall happy with the results. If you can get ahold of an electronic crossover, you could make a change like this and still run the 4 monitors as high packs until you replace them with horns. If you want to stick with
direct radiators, you will need at least 1 very efficient 15" or 2 medium efficiency woofers to do much better than 4 - 12's in a room that size.
