Can someone tell me if there are any pertinent disadvantages to building separate arrays for mids and highs? Im talking about professional PA arrays, not necessarily home-audio. Ive seen alot of designs and have really only recently been interested in the science behind audio reproduction (came from a rock background, as long as it was loud it didnt have to be clean...I have since heard the error of my ways) all of these designs (from what Ive read) do really well for mid-frequencys but start to suffer at higher frequencys because of the spacing between the high drivers...would building "high frequency cabinets" add to the problem?

sorry if this is the question of a NOOB, but I have no one to bounce this off of. please, feel free to educate!

Look into Dave Rat of Rat Sound Systems http://www.ratsound.com/ . He does sound for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and has had considerable success with splitting up different instruments, vocals, etc., through different parts of the PA system much of the time. 'Lots of technical papers about doing it this way. The Grateful Dead also used to do this with their "Wall of Sound" - different speakers for different instruments, vocals, etc. 'Definitely has its advantages if you can truly get into it...
