I have a older style D130. It has the "L" in the circle at the bottom of the exclamation point logo instead of JBL like my other D130's. I was wanting to come up with a 2235H for a project. Can this be reconed to a 2235H? I was reading on here it can be done but I was wondering about the VC gap? Is it worth the trouble to send it to a machine shop and have it bored out?

Also....can a 2240H be coned to a 2245H?

D-130 into 2235= NO
2240 into 2245=YES

if the D130 to 2235H is a no go then what is available to put back in my D130 basket?

You can put a 2235 kit into a D130 basket if it is not one of the older ones that has a narrower gap.

The 2235 in the D130 basket is the same as the 2235 kit in the 136A, 2231A or 2205A (or 2135, which I have had done), and it gives you the same thing as JBL recommends when Alnico 136's and 2231's need to be reconed.

That having been said, I think the D130F with the standard recone (now e130, I think) is worth money on the market, and I would not use that frame to make an alnico 136/2231 updated with 2235.

If you must have Alnico, find another alnico frame of that family, or, better, get a 2205H/J, 2235H/J or 2225H/J ferrite frame and have it done with a 2235 kit.

Any old Alnico woofer frame you are having reconed should be remagnetized at the same time.

A 2235 kit can fit in the D130 but it does not make it a 2235.:(

:bs: Hey, John of Manitoba, that's really pissant cropping you did to make a straw man of my post followed by your supposed correction, though I had already qualified my statement very explicitly.

Whereas this is what you said originally; it was unclear at best:

D-130 into 2235= NO
2240 into 2245=YES

And then you go on to say he can use an E130, as if I hadn't already mentioned it.
:bash:

WTF?

A 2235 kit can fit in the D130 but it does not make it a 2235.

It's very close and matches the JBL recommendation for reconing 136A's and 2231A's. If he wants to do it, he will get good results. Using a correct ferrite frame, though, is better.

Thanks speakerdave for all the info. This D130 does have the narrow gap. That being said, will the E130 kit fit in there or will it have to be machined. I hate to just throw out this d130 frame.

. . . . This D130 does have the narrow gap . . . .

I'm surprised at this. How do you know? I understand the D130F to have a wide gap.

You'll have to ask your reconer about this, I think.

It was to my understanding that the early D130s had the narrow gap. pre 1965ish. It has the foical label on the back but like I said in my first post there is a "L" in the circle of the logo instead of JBL. I think this dates the woofer to the mid 50's. Im no expert but this is what I beleave to be true.

I have already tore the cone out of the basket...of course I need to measure the gap to be sure. I hated to do it...it was the original cone but it was dead. One little thing that is very cool is that someone at the factory wrote in blue pencil "130" accross the the top of the motor structure. Wonder who that was:blink:

Did clubman ask what can be shoved into a D130 or did he ask if a 2235 kit will make a D130 into a 2235?

Clubman try a 2225 core with a 2235 kit if you can not find a 2235 working unit or a 2235 core.

2225 core is the exact same core as a 2235. Not close but exact.

I think if you go back and read clubman's posts carefully you may see that one thing he is really asking is if there is anything he can use his old D130 frame for. That's why I answered him the way I did. But I also gave him full information about the options for making a 2235, though you for some reason choose to ignore that fact and go on repeating what I've already said as if I hadn't said it.

In any case, this is the second thread clubman has started about an old D130 (the same one?), and I believe that between you, me and edgewound he has all the information he needs.

easy guys....I dont see why alot of members here get all worked up over silly stuff. I mean are we not all here to learn? The way you guys are arguing maybe I should just say the heck with it and throw out my old vintage gear and just buy new. I wasnt around back in the day of all this vintage gear..im in my 20's. So some of the older members here better like the fact that there are younger guys interested in this....I mean who else will continue on the legacy?

But my goal was to build a home subwoofer for my HT. I have 4 2240H's and one D130(frame) laying around not doing anything. If it was possible I wanted a 2235 if it would work in the D130 frame....so ive made up my mind just to use a 2240 reconed to 2245H.

This is a differant D130 from my other post.

easy guys....

OK.

Actually, I don't think either of us has addressed the "L" logo. Edgewound might know.

Ahh...ok guys. I had a 2225H kit installed in the D130 basket. I know its not the right motor for it. They had to machine the top plate due to the tight gap of the 130. I am pleased with the sound.
