Do these (the one on the left) have any value other than conversation pieces? I know someone that has a pair but one needs a crossover or something.

With $500 - $1000 in mods and rehab, they can be made to sound decent, but you'll still need subs....

They'll sound quite good as they are, very few speakers sound better between 100-10,000 hz, where most of the music is. Clarity and dynamics are superb and midrange reproduction, especially the human voice is bettered only by the Altec A5. Bass isn't deep but has excellent detail and many find it satisfying without subs. Highs are soft and rolled off but never wirey.

Some of the best reproduction of recorded electric bass I've experienced was playing The Blues Brothers laserdisc in mono through a single old A7 I had, a vertical vent one with an 803A woofer. Thing didn't go deep but man, it was doing something right.

With compensated crossovers to extend the highs and subs they'll sound better yet. The crossover compensation will cost about $20.

My first hand observations and opinion ya understand.

Right, I understand they sound good. I found several different configurations of A7s. The ones my friend has are exactly like the one on the left. I've never heard them. He bought them at least 20 years ago and have perched on a loft above the living room the entire time. He does not use them because one needs work and he's not mechanically or electrically inclined. He doesn't even remember if they're Altec or Advent! But then he doesn't know what year his truck is and he bought it new.
I checked out Great Plains for refurb parts and more pics. This was the only picture on the web I found of his model.
