It takes about 30 minutes to get the site back from tape - the below graphically describes what happened.

Actually one bad disk - disk 065 - caused it. These storage arrays typically cost $250-$500k and are not meant to fail like this.

Bo,

... except JBL speakers

Not to worry, there is a spare cab sitting right next to it.

Losing one disk shouldn't be a problem unless you were running raid0, right ? I would think most of these arrays default to raid5 to at least give you some level of fault-tolderance. At least the EMC Clariions we use do...

jblnut,

What you say is true, however, the controllers thought an entire disk shelf failed which would be OK in itself, except that a disk on another shelf really had failed.

Additionally the controllers thought that a pair - one on each controller - of loop ports had failed.

What the controllers thought happened was unrecoverable - what actually happened was just about trivial.

I'll be happy when these things are obsolete which will mean that they really work.

Hi John,

this afternoon at about 3 PM (in germany) I wondered about the missing link to the forum.......now it's clear.
Thanks again for your support for this site.

Thanks for doing a great job with the disk arrays and you continued diligence in trying to find the problem.
Once again Thanks!!
