And to think those beauties are sitting 30 miles from my house and I can't buy them. :(

Thanks for reconnecting me to those links. I'd completely forgotten.

The tech sheet says it uses the LE14H-3. So it was changed to LE14H-4 later.

4313B, what is the main differnece between the -3 and -4?

4313B, what is the main differnece between the -3 and -4?I just compared the two spec sheets. It would appear that the primary difference is that the LE14H-4 has a slightly lighter cone. All of the TS parameters reflect the changes that this would cause... i.e. higher Fs, higher sensitivity etc.

Yeah, looks like a sensitivity thing.
They got 2-3 dB more output.

We discussed this sensitivity tradeoff with the Array 1400 if I remember correctly.

Marketing?

In comparison to the LE14H-3:

The S4600 system is very nice. The LE14H-4 has 10 - 15 less grams of aquaplas making it around 91 dB. This is much more acceptable for the Japanese.

JBL really needs to make this system available in North America.

... available in North America.

.
... Europe too. I could convince my wife presumably. :)

10 - 15 less grams, does this change the bass frequency response significantly?
To be more concrete: Is there an audible difference between the woofers of the Array 1400 and the S4600?. (I had the chance to listen to an Array 1400 some time ago.)

Thanks for posting the S4600 info in the Technical Reference: System Info area.

It begs the question of comparison with the 1400 Array.

If they did, probably only through Synthesis dealers, as that is where the LS series is going to show up next year.

I was told that there is zero market for it in the U.S. and that it would not be available. I suspect that may be due to the lighter bottom end as compared with something like the 1400 Array.

So what would stop someone from buying a pair and adding a sub?
But then its the same old situation, nowhere to sell them anyway, besides Synthesis dealers, which really means no visibility to the public.

I did back in the 70's and 80's but that's along time ago. All the Marketing folks I knew are long gone.

The last time I saw any high end JBLs in a store was in '87 or '88. CC had a pair of 250Ti.
I was told in an email reply from JBL the new LS would be available in '09, Synthesis dealers only, no stores.
So the LS will be just like the PS was, very good system that most people in this country will never see. Until 4 or 5 years down the line, when they show up on the harmanaudio site under "specials".

OK, so I'll start saving up for the "refurbs" when they come out. ;)

I'm only guessing that's what will happen, at some later point in time. I was told by JBL that the LS would not be sold in any stores.

I kinda figured that. But when they don't sell many, because nobody knows about them, as with the PS, what's a company to do.
Personally, I think Harman/JBL should open uo company stores.

You know, there used to be a Harman Store over in Oxnard, CA in an outlet mall. I think it was mostly like Harmanaudio.com before there was Harmanaudio.com, and it closed at about the time that the Web site really got up and running.

If Harman ever decided to franchise a retail operation, I'd be looking into it. There's a business model that one could emulate that would make money, and it's not Sony, Bose, or Circuit City. And it'd be a place where you could upsell to Performance Series, Array Series, or even S4600.

Of coarse its much cheaper to have a web site than a store, but there's a lack of visibility, to say nothing of buyers not being able to audition the systems, w/o a good return policy where there is some kind of free shipping one way or something.
And speakers the size of the S4600 would be quite heavy, thus high shipping cost.
The S4600 is 117 lb/ea plus the shipping box, and over 40" tall
