3rd LHS Forum Meeting - Deutschland

Here we go again for all of you JBL fanatics in Germany. I talked at length with HP during his visit here a few weeks ago and again on the phone today and it's a plan - the 3rd LHS Meeting in Germany. The location is somewhere in Hamburg and the date is Montag July 28th - not the best choice for days but I don't get to Hamburg until sometime Sunday and HP it thinking he cannot come until Monday.

We have yet to decide on the exact location but the thought of a good restaurant/bier garten on the water front seems to sound inviting. We may also receive some suggestions from those members familiar with the Hamburg area.

This is a good opportunity for all who missed the last two meetings to join in the fun we all had before. We also have the opportunity to make the attendance higher than before since there are a few NRW members that are close to Hamburg. We'll miss the atmosphere of HP's Blues Garage but I'm sure we can have a good time.

I'm in the process of contacting all who have attended in the past and hopefully all who were unable for varoius reasons. Hamburg is a short drive from Denmark Jan so we're hoping to see you this time. Plese post your positive replies here on this thread and also any suggestions on location that will make this meeting a fun time.

HP is busy de-lagging his jets after his trip to the U.S. and trying to remember where he works so he can go back to work tomorrow. I'm sure he'll pop in here when he has time.

Hi Peter:

Glad that you will make it this time. Thanks for the nice pic and I'm sure it's a great place - what a view!! I could sit there all day and watch marine traffic, talk and drink bier - but someone may have to help me to the car come time to leave.

Any place will be fine with me since this is my first visit to Hamburg. I will leave the location decision to all of the Hamburgians who for sure will find a great place.

I've spoken with Fangio but no decision from him yet - we'll need to lean on him a bit. Still hoping to hear from Sir Richard (richluvsound) in London and Jan in Denmark. Paragon and Hansjuergen have replied that they will try to attend. The potential turnout is already starting to look good.

I hope that our Monday schedule will not prevent some from attending. Everyone here in the U.S. knows that Europeans have more vacation time and free days than they can use - right????? With this in mind we're hoping that everyone can sneak in an extra day off and make it to the event.

thanks for your special mail information. I regret I missed last two LHS meetings but this time I think I can arrange it taking part. I'm looking forward meeting you and the "gang" in Hamburg.

The chosen restaurant is fine and Hamburg is worth a visit anyway.
If someone should need a hotel to stay I recommend Hotel Hafen Hamburg where I stayed several times, its a nice privat hotel with a wonderful view to the harbour (Landungsbrücken). Its very close (walking distance) to Restaurant Fisherhaus.

The Fischerhaus has moderate prices and it has a good reputation for decades.
Their website gives good information for foreign guests.
You can reach the "touristic harbour" by foot.

Great pictures!!!! I can see now that 2 1/2 days in Hamburg is clearly not enough.

Attendance is growing as I just heard a yes from Peter Bronak nrwjbl.

We're at 7 with me, hp, Claus, Peter H., Wolfgang, Peter B.,Jan Daugaard. and we have several other good possibilities. I forgot about Peter Becker so I will send him a PM today. If we get the guys who have attended before (Fangio, Guido, Eckhard, Rich and Hansjuergen) we will be at 12. Rolf in Norway is a possibility too. Is 15 possible?

I spoke to Fangio yesterday and he will come from Berlin for the meeting. That put the count at 8. He also spoke to Paragon and it looks good that he too will make it. Wolfgang has contacted Peter Becker and we will await his reply. A little over 4 weeks away we now have a nice count. Let's hope we can maybe get 4 or 5 more guys.

I'm looking forward to meeting the new attendees beyond those I met at previous get togethers. Peter Hoerninger and I are long over due for meeting and having a long talk.

Hi folks.

Looking for a flight from Sandefjord to Hamburg at a reasonable price. No luck so far. I really don't feel driving 300km (600 km to and back) to Gardemoen and take a flight there to Hamburg. Torp airport in Sandefjord is only 50km.

I am checking what I can find out. There is a flight from Torp to Frankfurt, but I guess there is many km from Frankfurt to Hamburg?

Hope you find a flight. We are at 8 (plus 2 wives) and counting. Still hoping for Eckhard, Hansjuergen, Guido and Peter Becker. Sounds like Richard in London is wrapped up in work so he's likely to be absent this time. I wonder if any of the UK members might want to make the trip over. Members in France seem to be quiet but they're not too far away. Let's make this a convention instead of a meeting!!

Glad to see that you will attend. I think that Peter made the reservation at the Fischerhaus at 3pm. You're coming a long way for such a short stay. I got the impression that you would drive the 300 km distance,

We are hoping that the meeting will continue past our gathering at the Fischerhaus - possibly to the garden at someone's home or maybe a visit to a couple pubs and a street tour. Are you sure that you must leave so early??

Claus, myself and likely Wolfgang will be in or around the city all day Monday prior to meeting at the Fischerhaus, and maybe Peter too. If you arrive in Hamburg early let me know and we will all meet you somewhere. If you need I can forward to you my cell phone number in Hamburg.

my intention is to be at the Hauptbahnhof at 12.16 on the 28th of July, red bag too.

A visit of the harbour (Hafenrundfahrt) is a must for all I think.

The visit of the lovely railway museum (Speicherstadt) is time consuming and I suppose it is a reason to come to Hamburg once again.

UPDATE:
Today I was in Hamburg and took the chance to have a look into the Fischerhaus:
We will have a round table in a corner of the room with great views to the south and the west over the harbour. A small table will be added. :)
(In the ground floor you would look at the flood protection wall.:D )

The Fischerhaus has parking places for free. If you enter the house at the left front corner you simply go upstairs and choose table_9.

Eckhard is not able to attend stating that he has burned all of his vacation and free time. Eckhard - we will miss you and I will suggest that we leave a space for you at the table, and that someone buy you a bier, and then I'll drink the bier in your honor. How's that for a friend. We are still waiting to hear from Hansjuergen and Peter Becker.

and if so just let me know and you'll get to see a lot of them because I for one will rather cover the sightseeing part of the location Hamburg and periphery. Some of us did a harbour tour by boat and it really had a lot of beautiful and impressing scenes to offer.

For starters here's the "Louisiana Star" – a type most of you in the US should be familiar with.. ;)

Some of us stayed in a hotel out-of-town. Attached are pics of Rick & Donna's arrival in the afternoon before, and the following dinner in a restaurant with excellent spanish cuisine, in an old restored farmhouse typical for the region of North Germany, with Claus (schloerch) and Wolfgang (salinat7).

Well to be honest, I did not take many pics with sufficient quality of the actual event next day. Let's hope Ricks Canon was more reliable during that dinner and you'll have to wait for him to get them sorted at home. For now I can safely tell that it was an amusing afternoon, with some new faces. Other participants might step in here and take over.

The actual event day started at 12:20 at the Hamburger Hauptbahnhof when Jan arrived. Due to the red JBL bag there was no waste of time.

It was a very warm day, so we first aimed at a restaurant to get a cooling icecream. In the Europa Passage we found a place on a balcony upstairs, where we had a wonderful sight over the lake Alster.
We had some hours left, we made a walk through the city to the harbour passing the councilhouse and the Alsterarkaden. The swans in front of the Alsterarkaden are typical for Hamburg and the Alster. We took a look into one of the older business houses, some have wonderful staircases. Unfortunately this house had no paternoster which still can be found in Hamburg. From far we saw the Bismarck statue, at least the head.
On our way to the most famous church of Hamburg, the St.Michaels Church (Michel), we passed the Trostbrücke (bridge built 1881-83, first mentioned 1266). The Michel has the tower which can be seen first when a saylor comes up the river Elbe. We did not visit the church, this could be done with the whole group, and entered the Kramergasse. This little street has the oldest houses of Hamburg (17th century), they overcame all fires.
We went down to the Elbe and arrived at the Landungsbrücken (boarding bridge). Close to it there is the entrance of the older Elbtunnel (1911), worth to have a look at. We got down by feet and took up the elevator. We arrived at the Fischerhaus just in time.

We talked about all and everything between microphone and ear. Btw I learned quite a few facts about Copenhagen and Danmark too.

Next came Peter (Nrwjbl). We three were the last at the end. Others were gone, we made a walk over the Reeperbahn. Unfortunately we missed that there was the DOM (summer fair) whith a Bavarian beer tent. It could have been fun for all.

Hello All:

We made it home yesterday afternoon and we're now back to the daily grind. I see that Fangio and Peter H. have posted a few words and pics. I'm just now getting a few minutes to photo shop some of my pics of the visit to Hamburg.

Jet lag really doesn't describe my condition after returning to Chicago. I had enough sleep on the return flight to overcome the time difference, had I been reasonable and gotten some sleep before our departure. With a departing time of 6:30 am and knowing that we had to be at the Frankfurt airport at 5 am, we were still sitting at the table on HP's patio at 2 am, talking, drinking wine and Asbach-cola and listening to music. If my mother were there she would have reminded me that I'm getting too old for these activities.

We all passed out shortly after 2 am and I awoke (actually my wife dragged me out of bed) at around 4:15 am to the smell of hot coffee in Angelica's kitchen. Somewhere around 4:30 we headed to the airport and the without the coffee I wonder if we would have made it on time. We said our good-byes and we both had eyes closed before the plane left the runway.

Sometimes there are more important things than sleep and this was the case with our visit with friends in Germany on this trip - too bad we'll not see them all again until maybe next year.

The Forum Meeting at the Fischerhaus was a great success in my opinion. For me it was an opportunity to see everyone that I met on previous trips and to finally meet a few of the guys that I missed before.

In attendance were Peter B. (nrwjbl), Peter Hoerninger, HP (hofmannhp), me (saeman), Claus D. (schloerch), Jan Daugaard, Florian J. (fangio), Wolfgang S. (salinat7) and Tom Rode from Berlin. This was by far our largest gathering. We had a nice dinner and bier at the Fischerhaus and after that we all had a walk along the harbor front. I think everyone had a good time and the JBL talks continued until we all separated at the end of the day. A few of the guys continued in Hamburg and the rest of us went back to Jesteburg where we had our hotel rooms. For all who went to Jesteburg (Claus, Florian, me, HP and Wolfgang) we continued the meeting at Wolfgang's home on his patio - bier and Uzo as I remember, until well after midnight.

We were invited by Peter Hoerninger to stop by his home for a visit and some JBL talk. On our way from Laboe to Hamburg we stopped for a couple hours to visit Peter and his wife and we had a wonderful time. Peter and I have been looking forward to finally meeting as I was unable to visit Hamburg on previous trips and he was not able to attend our two previous meetings in Bad Homburg at the infamous Blues Garage.

As with all stops, we stayed longer than expected. Peter - the cake was wonderful and two pieces were mandatory. Eating a third might have been a bit rude!!! but I could have with no problem.

Attached are a couple more pics from our harbor cruise also from Frankfurt. I wonder if it would be possible to visit all of the wine cellars in Germany in a normal lifetime???? It might be worth a try for those living in Germany but not possible for us tourists.
