Aside from the fact that one is a JBL consumer product and one is JBL Pro is there much difference in these products;

Audibly?
Quality?

Appreciate any opinions or experiences.

Tks.

I wouldn't say one was consumer and one was Pro.
The 4312 ran the 12" woofer "full range" and brought in the 5" mid where the 12 rolled off. Some say that's why it sounds so "natural"(no inductor on the 12"). The 12" in the 4312 has a treated cloth surround.
The 4412, as I understand it, uses a crossover between the 12 and the 5 and the woofer uses a foam surround. Other then that, they are virtually the same.

There were a few versions of each model. Some were available from both Pro and Consumer, the 4313C was a Consumer model. The 4412, 4412A and 4412A-1 were all Pro models. The 4412A-1 is currently available from Pro. The dates are last year of general availability.

Helo every body, i am french (sorry for my poor english) and a newbie in this forum...
I start being interested by JBL Studio speakers and i am interesting buying some 4312MkII or 4412... and my question is which one??! They look very similar exept the woofer roll-off naturaly to make the junction with the Mid... But what about the sound? are they same (or almost...) Can some one help me in my search?...

Thank you every body for your help...

Thank you Herve M!, what do you mean by more linear... one is clearer in the uper range? the other have more base?...
Do they have the same "in your face" frontstage?....

Thank you again, Fred,

4312 has L100 lineage with that voice and coloration. It's a "Control" monitor.

4412 is a true "Studio" monitor with an accurate, clean, even "dry" character.

thank you Zilch for the info... I am a little bit afraid when you say that the "4412" have an "even dry character"... because i want a "full body" sound... not too much bright in the highs and with a clean and full base...

Must i have a look to the L100 or 4311 for what i am looking for ???

Thanks, Fred,

"Must i have a look to the L100 or 4311 for what i am looking for ???"

I don't think so. I had L100's for years. A friend was in a bind so I got to baby sit his 4412's for a month or so. After that I was never happy with the L100's. The 4412's have deeper bass better highs and smoother response. If you can do a side by side but don't let the L100 fool you. To hear what's really there go for the 4412's.

Thank you Robh3606, your comment was very helpful... when you said "better highs", it is because they are more pronouced?

I've got the 4312A model with the metal tweeter. How do they compare the 4412? Thanks

Fraula

They are flat, don't have the rissing response at 7K and go out to beyond 20k. So smoother and more extended.

Deadwood

The 4312A is almost a bridge between them. It uses a simple 1st order network on the same 104H-x midrange a second order on the same 035ti tweeter. The woofer runs wide open like the 4311/L100 and has the same bass peak. I see the 4312 as an improved L100 with a smoother upper midrange and more extended high end with the 035TI.

Take a look at the driver responses of the 2 midranges in this thread. You can see where the rising response comes in for the 4311/L100. The 104H is a smoother driver up top.

This has been discussed elsewhere on the site, as Rob has indicated, but an overview is probably in order. Some time ago, I developed an article for our old forum on how studio monitors (and particularly JBL monitors) evolved. I have just dug this up and added it to the reference section here:

http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=34426#post34426

This should give you a basic understanding of why the 431X series of monitors has a unique sonic character. Current monitors, such as the 4412, place much greater emphasis on absolute accuracy than the older 4312's, and like Rob, I much prefer this sound. However, the best option is to try and audition the 4412 and 4312's for yourself. Even if you can't hear them together, I think you will find that they are distinctive enough that it shouldn't be hard to select a preference.

Thank you every body for your help!... I will try to listen both speakers even if the 4312MkII is more easy to find than the 4412 in France...
One last thing... will all that have been said, i notice that the 4312MkII have a very flat response. Maybe because the "4312MkII" have been design for the audiophiles part, but here is the courbe mesured by a french Magazine (Prestige audio video) during their review in 1997...
