I have an L40 bass driver that need repair, the paper like ring around the cone has split, does anyone know the best place to get it done professionally? I live in Nottingham, England.

I just love the sound of my JBL's

Are you sure it's not the foam surround? Easily redone with after-market parts by a speaker shop or do-it-yourself with directions from this site. Search "resurround" and I'd recommend Rick Cobb for well-made replacements. JBL does not supply surrounds, only full re-cone kits.

You'll probably stumble on this thread: http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=469

Remember: The surround goes on the back of the cone!!! You may have to remind your speaker-rebuilder of this fact.

Thanks for that link to the post regarding the reconing, it would appear more like the white cone with the hardened split black ring around it. It certainly feels like paper, maybe I can post a photo.

I'll be eternally grateful for any information to repair that speaker.

If my ears can bathe in the wonderful rich sound that is JBL.

Rich,

order the kits from Rick Cobb. If you want to jump on the train and bring them down we can do them in an afternoon. ------ 30 htz signal is a must !

I cant do it just now, but I'll try to organise something for the future, maybe send them off, what was the name of the German guy?

There is nothing like listening to music that one has composed and played through JBL's:- it' brings every string slide, every mistake every breath into purest detail. (if the cones ain't gone)

Hi L19,

Welcome to LH! Hope you get your speakers running again.

Hmmm, from the description are you sure these are L40 drivers? The L40 uses an 10 inch 127A (alnico) or 127H (ferrite magnet) that uses a black cone and foam surround. Your description of a white cone with a papery thin black surround sound much more like a L46/L56/L86 type driver, specifically for the L56 is the 118A or 118H. See this catalog page and let us know if you have the woofer for these speakers instead - if it was the 10 inch, it could have been installed into your L40's as a replacement. Get the JBL logo and number in a picture so we can see what you have there.

Regards,

Bart

Here's what the L40 woofer should look like:

He could have been referring to the white-faced cone in the re-surround thread. I didn't check but I seem to recall a white-faced LE14 of some vintage as the subject of the repair in that thread.
