I'm just about ready to start working on some 4-ways utilizing 2012H drivers for low-mids, but I'm still trying to decide on the drivers for hi-mids. I was planning on making a kind of 4315 on steroids - Sub1500 for lows, 2012H for low-mids, 2104H or 2105H for hi-mids, and 2405H for highs, (all drivers are new). Active crossovers and EQ would be used, since I really don't have the resources to experiment with passive for these.

But now I'm rethinking the hi-mids, since I also have a spare set of 2447H drivers, so I'm looking at horns that might work. I've got some 2381's, but need to see what else is out there.

I'm planning on trying something different for the 2012H drivers. In addition to the ported secton of the cabinet for the Sub1500's, I'm going to try porting the "doghouse" cabinet for the 2012H's, since leaving them sealed would result in a frequency hole between lows and lo-mids. The other option would be to drive the Sub1500 to a higher crossover frequency. I'm just not sure if a Sub1500 can handle ~250hz as well as something like the more compliant 18" 2245H, the way JBL does it in the 4345's. This is definitely a case where only experimentation will show how well these alternatives work.

Needless to say, I'm only going to be using "rough" cabinets during the design process, so if it just plain doesn't work out, there's no great loss... :p

These are still my favorite sounding horns for 1.5 in drivers. I'm using these on my 4-way with 2435hpl drivers.

Hi John
Actually, you are not really trying something different by using a ported 2012H enclosure. Here is a link to my own project that uses a 2012 driver:

http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11664&highlight=2012H (http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11664&highlight=2012H)

My “doghouse” enclosure has a net internal volume of 0.5 cu. ft. and it uses 2 - 2.03125” inside diameter x 2.1" long ports (PVC plumbing pipe).

Actually, the gross volume of this enclosure is larger then 0.5 cu ft. But, you have to subtract the volume swallowed up by the driver, any wooden bracing or cleats, and even the volume swallowed up by the ports.

Before, I starting my own project I ran countless response tests using both sealed and ported enclosures for the 2012H driver. And a ported enclosure does improve the low end response verses a sealed enclosure (below 300Hz). Above about 300Hz the differences between the two enclosure types are not very significant.
