Hello all - First post, but I'm been lurking for a few weeks. Fate brought me here. Every spring, local communities in my area have "trash days" so people can get rid of large bulky items that are taking up too much space.

In past years, trash days have been a good source for gardening tools and pots, so I usually check it out. This year was a little different:

When I found these, I was so jazzed that I barely noticed their 62 lb weight. I had to lug each one up 3 flights of stairs - phew!!!!

Upon hooking them up, I was suprised to discover that they both work. Once I figured out how to get the grill cloth off, I found that both D130 woofers have 2" rips in the cones starting at the surrounds and extending inwards. Both tweeters work fine, and I can't complain. I had to apply some Deoxit to the L-pads.

Checking the catalogs, I would guess that these were made around 1969.

Of course the legs were missing, so a trip to Ikea was in order.

The tops have some sun damage and a couple of plant rings. I worked on them with some fine steel wool and the rings are disappearing. Later, I'll treat them with a few coats of tung oil.

I absolutely love the way these speakers sound. I've been a long-time vintage equipment nut. I've always used vintage Jensen speakers (tri-ettes & TF-3s) Needless to say, the JBLs are quite a revelation. My only previous experience listen to JBLs was back in college hearing bad metal blasted over JBL tower speakers in a dormroom.

Right now I'm running these with a Dynaco ST-35 (EL84) and a Conrad Johnson PV-1 preamp.

Does anyone have any tips for repairing the tears in the woofers? I would like to eventually get them reconed, but cash is tight right now.

And maybe, if necessary, fabricating a patch applied to the back of the cone of some construction paper. Thin paper and thin the glue. Might work.

Elmers & coffee filter paper.

Bullets are worth as much as or more than the legs, actually....

A very light coating of Pliobond may also do the trick.

Hi,

for to find out the age or year of fabrication we can use the LHF Registry.
There are 10 pcs listed, but all without known year.
If you post (or PM them to me) the driver numbers, we (I) maybe can tell you more.

Which legs did you end up getting from Ikea? I need some for mine! Thx

I got these in the 6" version:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20049538

They worked real well and they are very affordable - $12 for a set of 4 including the hardware.

They come in 4" and 8" versions too. As a bonus, they offer about 1" of height adjustment which allowed me to slightly tilt the speakers upwards.

Thanks for the reply. Those look good, but it looks like you need to drill to mount the bracket. My C36's have the stock threaded brackets inside, so I'm hoping to get something that fits the threading and just screws in. Don't really want to drill any extra holes. Yours do look sharp with those Capitas, though...

I found these legs (http://www.cabinet-legs.com/Sedona_Furniture-legs-Camar-L2.htm) while searching the forums here. I like the looks of #8, but the price scares me.

My cabs also have the threaded inserts, but I noticed that they seem fairly recessed, so a leg with longer threading may be required.

Cool! Always liked the C36. Son of C35! Of course, the 030 system is a classic, to put it mildly. But, I always had an urge to work up an "LE" system for that cab. It's a perfect size, well constructed, and about 3.5 cubic ft. as I recall. Would put the entire book shelf line (undersized for optimum bass) to shame. You could think about something based on LE14A, for example. 2 or 3 way. Do a crossover based on one of Greg Timber's later offerings. Many possibilities when you get ready to replace/recone or whatever. They look great! :applaud: Mike
