View Full Version : Any other equivalents to 033 Tweeters?

Greetings to all - first time poster.

I'm in the process of R & R'ing a pair of L-110's, and one of the 033 tweeters is toast.

I'm trying to find a replacement which does not cost the earth (if anyone has one to offer, let me know!), and I am wondering if there were any other tweeter options that might be a good candidate for replacement of the 033's? ( ...and yes, I did do a number of past post searches on this site which did not yield this info).

Maybe the tweeter from another JBL model, either earlier or later in the model run, could interchange?

What I am seeking is a replacement tweeter which physically fits into this cabinet w/o modifications, so that I can continue my search for the elusive 033 and replace it in the future. But, in the meantime, I'd like to fill the existing hole with a similar tweeter so that I am not dead in the water.

My acoustical standards for this specific speaker and the intended end user are a bit relaxed, so even a proper sized non-JBL tweeter would be a good candidate.

A search of such places as Parts Express (a.k.a Part sEx press) did not yield one which looked as if it could fit. The driver board hole's too big for most candidates.

Or, finally, is there a tweeter "rebuilding" firm who could do a repair on the dead one that I have, as another option?

Thanks and Cheers - DM

You could give 034's a shot. I believe they are listed as replacements (though not exact) for the 033 in at least one tech sheet for the L150, which also uses the 033.

I picked up a pair of 034's from ebay at one point for a great price, missing the screens that are supposed to cover the center, but other than that they were in great shape. Here are some pictures for comparison.

Here’s what they looked like when I had them in my L150’s

They aren’t exact replacements in terms of their acoustical qualities; they sound a bit more like the 035Ti’s in my L100T’s. I personally liked how they sounded in my L150’s, but eventually ran into a problem using them. They are framed in plastic, whereas the 033’s are framed in metal. When playing at loud volumes with the L150’s sealed cabinet the plastic frame on the 034’s couldn’t handle the internal pressure and would vibrate. The JBL L110 being a ported design and using a smaller woofer, you would probably not encounter this problem.

When playing at loud volumes with the L150’s sealed cabinet the plastic frame on the 034’s couldn’t handle the internal pressure and would vibrate. You might try mounting the 034 with a rubber base gasket or thin o-ring. Also, the protective screens and o-ring that mounts that part are/were available from JBL quite recently and are likely to still be.

Hmmm, actually I just came across this:

http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Technical%20Sheet/L110%20ts.pdf

It actually goes as far as to specifically state that the 034 is “not safe” for the L110 system. I really can’t imagine what would be “not safe” about it though.

This is the page where it shows 034’s as a replacement for the 033 in the L150:

Well hope I didn’t lead you in the wrong direction. Depending on what the actual issue is they might still be an option as they are really quite a bargain on eBay lately. I can’t imagine what would prevent them from working, even in my case with the rattling on the 034’s plastic frames it was relatively minor and I’d gladly toss them back in if my 033’s died, but then again it doesn’t list them as being “not safe” for the L150’s… :dont-know

The L150 network is exactly the same as the L110 for the HF. It seems peculiar that it's OK to use the 034 for the L150 and not for the L110. I'd keep watching eBay. The 033's come up quite frequently. For some reason or other they keep fetchin' more and more $ for them.
