Zilch was referrring to a JBL Enclosure Model number - the 4507 ... box size contains 5 cubic feet of volume - build or get one of them & close off some of the ports to lower the frequency ...

Find more info by doing a Search on this site for "4507"

this thread about building a 4507 should help ..

This is the box Zilch is talking about. it has four ports and is tuned to 40 hz I believe, by plugging varying ports, the tuning can be lowered.

Turn the box upside down and on it side to see if the crackling sound changes.

The voice coil is rubbing.

Well then..., when you have it reconed (~$185 :biting: ), have them add the mass-ring and make it a 2235 if you really intend to use it as a subwoofer.

(Sometimes voice coil rub can be alleviated by turning the speaker to a different orientation.)

The mass ring is part of the 2235H recone kit (the only kit available for a 2231A recone).
Omitting the mass ring would turn it into a 2234H.
