New DIY Compact Monitors

Hi All,

after looking over my shelves, I saw some parts laying around and gettin dusty. So I decided to built a pair of speakers with the parts.
The Target was a as compact as possible Monitor but with 15" woofers.
Here are some pics of the start.....others will follow

Is the wood front plate in MDF ?

Where have you found the blue paint and how do you apply it ?

ok,

the spare parts acquired from US-friends , ebay and on my shelves were:
2226H
2470
2405H
2312
2308
and some DIY Crossovers formerly used in my DIY 4333. Crossover Frequencies are 850Hz and 6500Hz.

I know....not the right parts for a Monitor, but for a high power system with the very compact size of: H=72cm (ca. 28"), W= 44cm (ca. 17,3"), D= 42cm (ca. 16-1/2") it will work very fine. netto volume ca. 98liters.
The cab is tuned to 34Hz in cause of the fres of the woofers.
Weight is ca. 43kg (ca. 90pnds).

A high WAF is secured with this size :D

What is the blue color code you use? The earlier codes presented her have been in a format not used in Norway.... Most likely different coding schemes in the US and Europe.

I as well would like to know about sourcing and application of the blue paint. I am also extremely interested in seeing the edges veneered, as well as the rest of the cab as I need to do the same to a pair of 4647 boxes.

Hi ratitif,

yes,...the baffle is made from MDF , the holes by a CNC machine.

The blue paint I found in my post box after Bo Putnam was so kind to sent it to me two years ago. His mixture is descripted in some old threads.

as said before....the color code you can see in old threads...I try to find them.

The picture I showed in the above post does NOT show the real color expresion in cause of the photoflash. It is'nt that bright in reality.
I made some tests before getting the color from Bo with RAL 5007.
It's very similar. but with less "red oxide" parts.

Beautiful work!

I've seen many pictures of side, top and bottom panels with 45 degree joints. My attempts to do such joints have been "not great". What is the secret to making these cuts so they fit together so well? I had a friend that told me that one problem may be that the arbor on my saw will only tilt towards my fence.

Anybody's help is welcome.

thanks.....this was the target......to make an "as compact as posible" cabinet with a 15" woofer.

they look wonderful in reality....the (shining) surface is only oiled after the tips from Rick.

to barkingdog: for good results with the 45° cuts, you need a saw with a sliding desk and very precise measurements.

Now it's time to start with the second one....and the tuning of the crossovers.....still looking for some nice terminal plates for the backside.

The name of the speakers can be 4317 or 4319...:D

BTW: the front badges are original new ones from early 4320s, but shortened to 32cm.
the outside measures: H=72cm, W= 44cm, D=44cm (without Grille)

(1) What are the dimensions of your finished cabinets?
(2) What is the approximate weight of each cabinet?
(3) Are those horns 2312/HL92 or 2307/HL91?
(4) What model woofer?

-dimensions are h=72,5cm (28 1/2 "), W=44cm (17 1/2"), D=44cm (17 1/2"). The gap between the cab trimm and the woofer basket is only 1/2" so I need to construct a special grille frame.(pics will come)
- weight is about 46kg each cab
- the horns are 2312
- the woofers are 2226H (with a spare woofer I will do a test with changing the cone edges to foam edges ,well knowing that the spider is a stiffer one versa the 2235)

Absolutely outstanding. This is precisely the same thing I want to do to my 4647 boxes. Like the other posters, I hope mine turn out similarly or close to it! I planned on creating the beveled edge with a router. Hope this is a good idea? Heres a pic of the victims, right now they are "beat up JBL black" and begging for such treatment.:D
