L88...what to do?

I bought a pair of L88 speakers today from a local thrift store. Took them home and tested. Sound is good, a little bit forwrd sounding compared to my little AR M1 bookshelf speakers. The L88's are somewhat boomy and I had to tun=rn down the bass a bit on my integrated Sansui. The question. How do you restore the cabinet> The speakers and tweeters are in great shape and there seems to be some glitching when I turn the high frquncy knob behund the box. Will contact cleaner do the trick? here are some photos,
