A friend of mine bought this setup a few years ago. It seemed like well made stuff, very vintage look to it. I think they were going for a Phase Linear look with it.

There are surely greater amps out there but for a lot more money. I would have it checked out if your planning to hook it up to expensive, rare JBL speakers to make sure it is OK. With 30 year old electronics you have to be aware of problems.

Here is some info that might help you with you decision. I used to own both amps in this vintage era. Liked them very much, Also owned the Pioneer Elite M-90, and M-91 which were the followers of these two silver faced units. The Elite series was considered Pioneers best, and If you like Pioneer I might suggest the M-91 if you can find one over there.?? Good Luck. :D

SPEC-2 Power Amplifier — In an era when electronics was rapidly evolving, the SPEC-2 had a long market life, being available from 1975 up to 1980. This 54-pound brute put out 250 watts per channel, featured large front panel meters, and had an advanced internal protection system that would shut down the amplifier if something went wrong with the amplifier circuitry or the speakers. Given that the SPEC-2 was designed to be rack mounted, it was popular in recording studios as well as home sound systems. Available 1975 to 1980, $995.

SPEC-4 Power Amplifier — 150 watts per channel, full dual-mono design with two power supplies and no components in common between the two amplifier channels. Although it is not as powerful as the SPEC-2, the SPEC-4 is considered to be more refined, and a little more sweet sounding. Available 1977 to 1981, $795.

My very first "hi-end" component was the Pioneer Spec-1 preamp. I think all the knobs and switches was the attraction at the time, plus the large brushed aluminum face plate. Got it pretty cheap too, for its day - $300. Eventually I sold it and went with more "audiophile" approved equipment. Too bad as I believe it, and the Spec-2, still bring good prices on Ebay.

As I stated b4 in your other thread this is what I currently run, but second generation, and I also run Adcom GFA-5802's. (x3)

(Huge Nelson Pass fan)

The above will do the trick for you.

Just thought you were a Pioneer fan because you picked the Spec, so that is why I posted all the above info. I have been down the Pioneer road and will not be turning back anytime soon.

I have proved this amplifier because by chance it belongs to a friend who has it in sale to a very good price ... apart that visually is perfect for my equipment.I am expecting to see if it has arrangement .... while I look for other things

I have owned over 12 Spec 2's and 10 Spec 4's in my time and still have a pair of spec 2's with a Spec 1 as one of my vintage systems. I also have two Kenwood 700 m's with a 700C preamp. The spec series is a bit more midrange and high freq forward much like the 70's JBL line. The Kenwoods are a bit more laid back.
A properly tuned Spec is a hard setup to beat. That being said, you have to keep them tuned up. The spec series need to be put on the scope , have the idle current adjusted along with the distortion checked at full load. Most all of my amps played when I got them, but when checked, at least one channel under load had problems. 1/2 the output waveform usually cliped badly at about 5 watts and start shutting down after that. A couple shots of cleaner and a few simple adjustments per the service manual and what a difference. Wow they really come to life.
Just because they work, dont assume they are set up properly. Have them tuned up before you make that final decision. They will hold their own with most of the other more expensive gear out there.

Good Luck. :DI don't know anything about the Pioneer Spec series of amps other than remembering them from the '70s stereo shops back in the day...

I had a Pioneer Elite M91 a few years back that a friend had given me to try out. I thougt it was a terrible sounding amp. It was somewhat like the worst of the early McIntosh solid state amps. It had a soggy bloated bass a hard transistor sounding midrange and a brittle yet dull top end. I was very pleased to sell it to a Pioneer Elite fan on ebay. It was very well built and looked beautiful, but sonically even a stock Hafler killed it. It was too bad too. It was so cool looking I really wanted to like it.

To be fair, I never tried it on a pair of JBLs. At the time I had a pair of large Sound Labs electrostats and some tiny mini monitors. It didn't work with either system.

I today have been speaking ... and it comments to me that it has a spoilt transistor and some things also, like for example a channel bypassed to other one.
I do not understand too much what you to speak, but I understand that this device is not advisable...
.
.
Coincidentally, today I have brought the amplifier fixed and this is what was broken ... Now it seems that everything is going well but I have to prove to a strong volume ...

When I turn on the amplifier, before connecting becomes operational in circuit protection (red light) for about 3 seconds .... this operation is normal?.Here tension is 220v and the amplifier is 125 ... I have a transformer but this gives only 500va and technical tells me that the amplifier operates 1000va ... when regulating the potentiometers butt, the amplifier is switched off ... This amplifier operates 1000va?
