Love the internal bracing!!!

How big is the port?

How big does a port need to be before it becomes just a big hole?

OUTSTANDING!!!!

Keep showing pictures of your work!

Scottty.

I'm powering my EIGHT JBL 2242,s with two CREST 8001,s. SERIOUS SOLID and HARD hitting low end. Tons of power, and can run for days full tilt boogie, without getting fatigued sounding.

Clear, clean, and DEEP, REALLY TOUGH,and BALLSY sounding.

Mat, nice cabinets, they look good! I chose 35hz as the tuning, lower, doedsnt have enough kick, higher at 40hz too shallow sounding, and too much kick, 35hz was best balance of deep sub bass, and kick with good efficiency.

JBL 2242 is the ultimate 18in subwoofer for pro and high level reproduction!

Bo/Scott;
Killer 18's and other such devices; There is a difference between hearing a driver and working a driver...........
Most people just "hear" their drivers, but some of ya'll know what it means to work them.
In fact, I think of them like equipment on a job site; X amount of material (air) gets moved properly and the "machine" makes you $.......................

In fact, I think of them like equipment on a job site; X amount of material (air) gets moved properly and the "machine" makes you $.......................Yeah, but, electrically, some amps are better at heavy duty use usually large power supplies make it happen.

Then, mutual coupling and clustering of cabs, make me have to "work" the drivers less hard, while still getting MUCHO HIGH SPL!

I tried both the Crown Macro Tech 3600 and Crest 8001, the Crest has more solidity and a firmer harder, more visceral thump, and good low end definition. The Crown sounds great, slightly mushy on the extreme deep LF, but, after a few hours, 3 or 4, it fizzles. The Crest just keeps on goin.......

But, two cabs per center stacks, 4 2242,s per location, works REALLY WELL, sub bass is HUGE! And DEEP, CLEAR and CLEAN.

The MACHINE has to work 12 to 14 hrs a day in summer season, so, total reliabilty and sonic performance are critical requirements for me.

My idea was to port them to 25 hz and use them at home. My ports are 6" not 8", my fault :).

matsIf you can make removable ports, you can try various frequencies! 25hz, 30hz, 35hz, and see what sounds best.

For me, 27hz was too much deep low end, not enough kick, 35hz was a bit more efficient in the kick, deep LF was nice, 40hz was too high.

Below 30hz or so, lots of sub bass info, but, I like a bit of kick, ( bite ) in my subs. But, 35hz sounds PLENTY deep, I hit low notes, they put out hair vibrating low end.

How many 2242,s will you have in operation These things like some power, and the Crest8001 and Crown3600 are just right to drive them.

Or, find two Bryston 4B SST amps, strap em in mono, run 1 JBL 2242 per amp that will THUNDER for DAYS!

Bass with BALLS to SHAKE your WALLS! And the neighbors for 3 to 5 houses on each side of you!

Scott, how high in frequency are you running your 2242's (I've forgotten)?
I was thinking of running lower tuning like matsj but using them really as subwoofers,
as opposed to sub + low bass. -grumpy

Impressive

How do you include the rounded bevel in the port calculation?

matsj
02-24-2008, 01:27 PM
If the port is 120mm or longer each end is counting as 40 mm.
If the port is shorter than 120mm each end is counting as 20 mm.

I think they work really good :D . I have tried them with a bridged Crown K2 on each (4x4) and it´s no problem to move stuff in my apartment :D .
The sound is very clean and a huge attack then they hit.

You suck! :D That is an awesome DIY absolutely brilliant top marks, so are you replicating sound system of the Empire Leicester square with all those subs. :applaud:They look like there based on the JBL 4645C THX

So what was the cost of the MDF in UK English pounds conversion?

I absolutely like the sound and feel of the JBL 2242 at the Empire with the stack of x16 4645 clusters, hits you uniformly from the lowest to the highest range in the sub bass frequency response, with 120dbc peaks and not one single rattling sound or any signs of bottoming out.

Maybe he was blown away! Literally! :rotfl:

Is that a JBL 6260 amplifier I see hiding off to the left. I see I see that port is 8” wide wow magnificent, tell you what pop on over I wouldn’t mind do a few more DIY enclosures like those wicked, UK MDF is cheep as biscuits. WOW MEGA WOW, I like it.

Strange I was off by a few inches and thou I’ve only seen a few pictures of the JBL amplifiers I was close.:D Yeah more pictures more because I get really turned on looking at diy designs of subs. So how many have you’ve finished or are still knocking up there other set of subs?

Hmm, where did you get the port because I’ve noticed in JBL specifications of speaker’s “ports not for sale” hmm why?

Don’t the bass mid to sub bass drivers usually have a rubber ring that goes around the magnet structure?

I see very nice indeed :applaud: and they come in a variety of different colours. Not being able to understand the language I’m willing to bet somewhere in the UK you can get hold of the different port sizes for custom diy speaker enclosures.
