I recently built new cabinets for my Urei 809 monitors - Identical to the originals in volume and construction but nicer looking. My wife did not care for the looks of the original cabinets since they are our living room speakers.

Anyway, I have build Walnut cabinets with grills and now want an emblem for the grills - they look a little plain right now.

So where can I get my hands on a pair of nice looking JBL or Urei emblems.

I made the cabinets to look Mid-Century Modern and would like to obtain badges or emblems from the 1950-1960's era. Prefer something with Black and Chrome or Brass.

Thanks

HERE (http://www.ureidj.com/downloads/wallpapers/UREI1620LEWP1280.bmp) is a picture with a large version of the UREI logo in it at upper right. Your best bet might be to get a copy of that pic, take it to a trophy shop, have them etch it into a brass or chrome plate and fill the etched area with black paint. The UREI logo dates from the late 60s or early 70s. I think brass would go well with your color scheme. I say best bet because UREI gear was always professional gear and never had a sexy, glossy logo plate that I am aware of. This could look quite elegant to match your very nice new cabs and would be relatively inexpensive as well. Another possibility is the "Things Remembered" chain in malls that engraves and etches keepsakes of various types. I'm not sure they would have as many options as a trophy shop.

At one time my brother's ex-wife worked at JBL. Knowing what a fan I was, one year for a birthday she gave me a couple of the orange plastic rectangles that say "!JBL" in silver. They are 3/4" wide by 5/8" tall with a sticky back.

Does anyone know if these are still available and if so, where can I get five for my center channel and four surrounds?

See bottom left corner in pic.

Not quite the same. Looks to me like the original cabinet would not suffer from the severe edge diffraction of the replacement.

Whether it is audible or not (and at what angle) is another matter. ;)

I know what you are saying about edge difraction and it was a consideration when drawing these up but I figure all the furniture in the room, the hard wood floors, and the plaster walls are doing for more "damage" to the sound than the 5/16" of wood that extends beyond the horns outermost radius.

Also, if you use the layman's first reflections exercise - hold a mirror against a surface and if you see the speaker then it is a first reflection - then there is absolutely no issue here.

I do know this, they cabinets are much more solid that the originals, at very high volumes there is virtually zero cabinet vibration. I am extremely pleased with them.

in that statement I was referring to internal dimensions, bracing, port dimensions, I used the original damping material, etc. So funtionally there are identical with the exception of the lip to hold the grill cloth.

JBL has all kinds of different logos listed as available from Pro parts. You need to look at the various cabinets, then go to the Exploded Views for those models at Pro Support, check the part number, then find them in the Pro Miscellaneous Parts list.

I've got a set of the 809 grilles and they use a frame arrangement in them with open tops and sides. That is, the wooden frame has lots of cut-outs along the top, bottom and sides. The versions I have were held on with Velco, which was stapled onto the cabinet and tends to fall off easily. I believe these were optional accessories at purchase time.

BTW, the covering material is your classic black double-knit not unlike those awful suits worn by cheezy disco bands in the 70s - the ones with the huge pointed collars (I know, my band wore those things ).

Cheers,

David

If I had the time to build new cabinets and a complicated grill like the one you mentioned I certainly would have. Unfortunately the tools I have to use for woodworking are over 200 miles away from me and with the limited time I had - three days - to completely build the cabinets from scratch I simply did not have the time.

So, some may have wondered what happened to my original Urei cabinets, trust me they were beat, will here one is.

A Urei cat house.

I left one of the cabinets at my dads after using it as a model for the new boxes. Not really knowing what to do with it he decided to make a Cat house out of it for my nieces cats. I still have the other box and may do the same with it.

The 811C grilles were held on with dowels that inserted into the face of the speaker enclosure. It was upon these that I based my comment. I was unaware of any other. Sorry.

Hi Bob,

Didn't mean to sound strident. I wasn't aware that they went to a peg/dowel arrangement. The ones on my 809s are pretty cheezy; the grills sort of just hang there on the velcro. Clearly, it was an afterthought. I'd pondered using some speaker pegs you can get from places like Parts Express but, frankly, I don't use the grills that much anyway.

Cheers,

David

No problemo, my friend. The stapled on velcro did, indeed, feel quite cheezy. Because the 811cs sit in my living room, I'm planning to create "homey" grilles on them and the dowel bit will make attachment a bit more secure. Perhaps I should consider building them up from open-sided frames. I suppose I could make the part that is flush with the speaker from heavier stock and make the front frame from something lighter. I was pretty good with tinkertoys. :D
