Altec made that driver SPECIFICALLY as a basshorn driver. Do you know if thats the kind of sound your after?

If so, how much space do you have for cabinetry? You can build single 15in 816,s, pretty easy on homes interior real estate. or BUILD a pair of double 15in 817A,s. bigger box, better bass, more efficient, if you have room.

how does the Altec 817 compare to the JBL 4550A?

http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/Low_Frequency_Enclosures2.pdf

"Directional horn for two 380 mm (15 in) drivers. Loads
effectively above 100 Hz, with usable response to 40 Hz.
Dispersion pattern at 800 Hz is 75 degrees horizontal x
30 degrees vertical. Net weight, less drivers, is 88 kg
(195 lb). 914 mm x 1524 mm x825 mm deep (36 in x
60 inx32K in deep)."

Just because it was designed as a horn driver doesn't mean that it can't be used elsewhere: the T/S aren't that odd. I've designed and built lots of horns, but I'm not going to do so for this house.

I'll just start modelling it and see what I come up with, but thought if there was already a design I'd use that.

davidJBL 4550A was a bigger box than the Altec 817A.

I know places had the JBL basshorns, and many had Altec. Set up properly, and used correctly, they both worked as functioned as intended.

They both sounded good, and projected, I dont really recall If I had a preference at the time. I know I liked JBL scoops for their punchiness, and kick. Liked the 2395 lens horns first time I heard them, at Studio54, in 1978.

I remember the LevanHorns, HUGE folded horns on fllor with ten foot wide mouth extensions. Midbass horns were up in the ceiling, I wasnt looking there, my eyes were on dancefloor, too many beuatiful women., that was I want to be! 15 and 16 years old, traversing Manhattan, at NIGHT, in the hottest clubs, who cared about speakers? There was something alot more compelling!

:)

http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11750 :DThat is large. Much larger than the sealed system I have in development that's been inspired by Jack Bouska's, but with (sealed) TL/ pseudo-aperiodic for the 15's.

http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/ubb/get_topic/f/3729/t/3268 :DThanks, but I'm not interested in horns at the moment, and have some spare 2x15 hypex that are superb 60-250Hz, and other flares for above that.

Thanks for the suggestions.
