What Tweeter to use with the LE-8

Just wondering if anyone had a suggestions for a modern or vintage tweeter that would go with JBL LE-8. I was thinking of running the le-8 full range, with a crossover for just the tweeter.

I think the Aquarius 4 system was LE8-T + LE20 alnico tweeter

(the one of the L88 and first L100)



I've heard about a system LE8-T and 044

interested by other answers...

I have a L75 minuet pair LE8-T + PR 8


and like others a bit disappoint ...

the PR 8 is passive range... no crossover on the system...

They just say LE-8 on the back 16 ohm. I'm dissaponted with the sound also, I tried putting a 6 1/2" passive radiator in the back of one of the cabinets, the back unscrews so I made a pattern from that out of some mdf and the sound hardly changed. Strange I thought the mids were more clear, but It hardly improved the bass. I was going to try porting the cabinet but I think its to small.

I have had considerable success with the diminutive Tang Band 28-847SD.

I also took some grief recently for suggesting that LE8Ts weren't all that.... :p

I was wondering if there is an easy way to test the crossovers I have. I think before I start buying stuff maybe I should see if what I got is properly working. I don't know what tweeters I have, but you would assume they would have used something as good as the LE-8 the only marking on them are 2H-15C made in Japan, the squawker says 3h-4A. The set up just doesn't sound right.

I am using a 2402h with the horn of the 076 cat eye tweeter, the problem is big difference in spl, will try to biamp using a small triode amp for the highs...
Somebody suggest ribbon tweeter as a good match with le8, I will try also this solution...

Nice to hear from a new WA member. :applaud: What part of the state are you in?

Have you tried bypassing the crossover and running the LE8's full range? If the crossover is suspect, at least then you will have a feel for how the driver sounds by itself.
Also, do you have any pictures?

I live just outside of Yakima. I haven't bypassed the crossover yet, the boxes for these is so small, I don't think they could ever sound good. I will try to attach a picture. I have dial up it might take a minute.

Running them sealed in a small box could be what the issue is. Why not use the plans available on the site?? You just can't use any passive radiator. It needs to be tuned just like a bass reflex cabinet does.

I would take a look at the plans, drop them in a bigger box use either a reflex cabinet or the PR-8, then re-evaluate them.

Have you had the drivers out of the boxes?
It's a little hard to see the surrounds from the pictures. If the surrounds are black foam, they may be deteriorated and in need of replacement. If they are the tan aquaplas they are most likely a little stiff. Both could be a problem.

I just refoamed them with the grey surrounds, Is there a break in period? I have no clue on proper box size, I was messing around with a design program last night, and your right, just can't toss in any passive radiator. Ive looked at plans for these woofers I just don't have all the necessary tools to build a good box, thats why I was hoping to use the ones I have with a passive radiator mounted in the back, this doesn't sound like a good idea anymore though.

I have run LE8Ts in small closed boxes with tweeters. They need a sub.

Ported, or with PRs, you can't get deep bass out of them without running up against their excursion limits.

you can always sale the LE8 pair on eBay to a collector

and with the money buy you a good pair (or two) of L19 or L26 :thmbsup:

They are BIG little JBL... easy to find and unexpensive

Its amazing what people will pay for these. I thought about ebay, but I think I'll keep em for now. I have plenty of room for another speaker project or two, besides with all the speaker box plans I've seen on here, I have to try at least one.
