I have two pairs of L-166's one is my dads that he gave to me and the other i got from a classified ad. The one i got from the classified has a component of the crossover that looks like it was added by someone over the yrs it is in the back corner of the box and is spliced into the LF driver line. I have seen the same thing on an ebay add for the L-166 cabs and crossovers. was this a common modification? and what the heck is it?

The original L166 didn't have a choke on the LF transducer (122A), the L166A added in a 2.0 mH iron core inductor in series with the LF transducer (122A-1).

ok thanks, only other question, is swapping the LF drivers goin to make a difference between the two models? i have both sets and one is in cosmetically good condition and the other is not and i wanted the drivers condition to match that of the cabinets.

What are the cosmetic flaws you see?

well when i was twelve i refoamed one of the woofers with my dad and the glue came off so not thinking i put some non-clear dring glue on it and so there is a yellow mark along the edge of the surround.

Ah HA! A JBL nut as a child! VERY cool...

Well, since you're likely a bit older now - as are the surrounds - why not redo them? The 122A's are surely better off for it.

It's easy!
It's fast!
It's fun for the whole family...!!
