Nice toaster. Does it do bagels? ;)

(Beautiful craftsmanship, too!)

I assume this is for mounting two fader controls? And what else?

Looks like a real nice custom use for two very high end audio console modules!
very cool - so, what are your plans for using this 2 channel system?

-2 inputs with selector to each module, and then 1 selector to the output.

Well yes, its a mixer - I just wonder what your plans for the mixer are -
(sorry, have a good friend with a mobile studio (Neve) in a Mercedes truck, so I'm a wee bit familiar with mixing) ...

No, sorry that my explanation is not clear, my idea is to do a dual stereo volume, but not a mixer. :(
Entry A1 or A2 and volume or Entry B1 or B2 and volume :)

Can anyone comment on the relative sonic superiority of either the Neumann W444 (and its variants) or the Lawo W990 (and its variants) over the other? Or is it pretty much an "even draw" between these two?

(I'm interested in the use of these modules in an audiophile sound system, as volume controls between CD player and amplifier.)

Thanks!

Hi Chris,

you can nearly be sure, that all this Faders sound similar.
They all were built after the very strong regulations of the "ARD-Pflichtenheft 3.1" of the german broadcasters society.

But you have to know, that this Faders, as also all other modular amps and equalizers are filtered between 40Hz and 15kHz for the broadcast use.
It's possible to change their frequency band transmission characteristics to "hifi", by changing (or bridging) some RC parts.

A frequency band down to 5Hz or near DC, like some hifi crap offers (and nobody needs this), is not possible with this studio stuff in cause of the transformer balanced I/O with 600 Ohms impendance.

Thanks for the information. I passed it on to a friend who uses the W444STA in his hi-fi system and received this reply:

"It is ruler flat from 40Hz to 15kHz. But if I remember, it's only down -3db at 20Hz and -1db at 20kHz. So it's not so bad. I thought about removing it but decided to leave it alone. One poster on the internet says that if you remove the filter, you may lose the musicality of the unit also. He says it's the filter that also gives it its nice sound. I do not notice any lack of frequency extremes with the W444STA. In fact, it has the nicest bass of all my preamps. The area where it loses out is in the details and transparency of the mids and highs. It's a nice, smooth preamp but lacks the finest detail. My friends think it is the best value preamp around though."

So, since I don't even have any of these units to play with yet, I guess I'll just have to let my ears tell me what to do after I actually hear them! Thanks for the help. Any other comments pertinent to this subject would also be appreciated . . .

Hi Hoffmanhp,

I also have a LAWO DW990 VS/6 but I have trouble connecting it, partly because the disgram I have is in German. Would you be kind enough to share with me how the connections are soldered?

Thank you very much.

Hi Stéphane

Very nicely executed.

I have a similar pre and use Neumann SKC units to select between 4 inputs and balance / SE output options. I't not as svelte as yours but works well.
