Region 2
14 minutes 42 seconds
Chapter 5
Time duration 4 minutes 22 seconds
Six-track Dolby stereo digital

This film happened to play at the Empire Leicester Square screen 1, :p looks like I missed this one.

This rumbled with different ranges of frequency on the LFE.1 as the ole lady started to capsize upside down!

Bass mid over LCR fronts only needed a little sub bass extension with last nights high-pass filters applied to LCR LF.

JBL 4645 got mild workout during this sequence as I wanted the level to be in keeping with the JBL control 5 as part of new test.

The surround channels with centre back really show-off well with this awesome Dolby, mix.

From the position of the ECM8000 along with the high-pass filtering I applied to LCR LF to reduce the harshness LCR control 5 is registering down to near 30Hz thou not at high SPL db it’s a kinder comfortable level its range is uniform up to 120Hz on the spectrumlab.

I can see few minor warm spots that can be addressed later on. Adding the LFE.1 track to the LCRS with Eltax A-12R in mute mode it’s almost mirror image on the direct frequency waterfalls I did earlier yesterday evening. Oh, I’m chuffed with the new levels.

The contrast on the CRT monitor is a bit off putting as its smearing some portions of the colour spectrumlab practically a few pink spots.

I think your book is wrong if it missed the Disney classic ...
4 channel is QUAD, right?
- IMDB says this -

FANTASIA - Sound Mix: 4-Track Stereo (http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=4-Track%20Stereo&&heading=15;4-Track%20Stereo) (1956 re-release) | 70 mm 6-Track (http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=70%20mm%206-Track&&heading=15;70%20mm%206-Track) (70 mm prints) | Dolby (http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=Dolby&&heading=15;Dolby) (35 mm prints) (re-release) | Fantasound (http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=Fantasound&&heading=15;Fantasound) (original release) | Mono (http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=Mono&&heading=15;Mono) (1941 roadshow screenings) | Mono (http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=Mono&&heading=15;Mono) (1947 re-release)

Free posting privileges in the forum of choice ?

The book says "Tommy" ..think WHO

well then, whats the guess on 5 channel ?

(hint:1979
they had to rewire theaters for the first run showings & BIG HINT ..there were no on-screen credits , each viewer was handed a program.)

... but seems like Heather got it right the first time in that Fantasia was actually a true surround sound production (truth be told, I always thought it was the first stereo movie - whoops...)

Disney employed the proprietary Fantasound technology to create a surround sound field with left front, center front, right front, left rear, and right rear channels. The main soundtrack incorporated only the front three channels; the two rear channels were recorded on a separate reel of film, and "steered in" separately when needed:

http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/sound/Fantasound1.htm

Nonetheless, I'm interested in the 1979 answer, since (of course since I'm a nerd I did a quick internet search after reading your question) what I've read seems to indicate that Star Wars reintroduced surround sound in 1977 with Dolby "Stereo" which was really an optically encoded, four track surround system.

What's my consolation prize for trying even if I don't get the correct answer? If I have my choice, I'd like the ceramic Dalmatian, please ;)

dont know if you can call 'steering in" 2 more tracks as quad ?
But yes, 3 is multitrack, but not quite quad...

would not imagine that all theaters had 2 projectors in order to do the steering ? (at time of release)

Star Wars with NO credits ?? (Famously scrolling across the screen ?)
not AFAIK.

Well kinda, but not. (the kinda part is that Lucas was scheduled to direct the movie in question , liked the story, but declined due to lack of US govt help and filmed the same story "In a galaxy far far away") paraphrasing Walter Murch, who won the statue for the sound work.

I think you win the virtual chiwawa. Last I'd heard, ceramic Dalmatians were an endangered species.

Is that Linda Lovelace in your pic ? (not that I know who she was) :o:

I'd like to solve the puzzle: Apocalypse Now

Per IMDB: "The first film to use the 70mm Dolby Stereo surround sound system."

But quintaphonic sound (and Tommy was the only movie to ever use it) was not quadraphonic at all from what I can read. It was actually "five discrete channels. Three speakers were behind the screen - left, center, right and two speakers, also of equal fidelity, were in the left rear and right rear of the theater."

In terms of quad, I'm still confused. Star Wars was featured Dolby "Stereo" in 1977 which was actually a 4 channel system (Left, Center, Right, and a single surround configuration.) Additionally, that wasn't even the first to use the 4 channel system: http://users.telenet.be/nicks_auditorium/en/dolby.html

OK - so now that I've spent a half an hour of my life that I'll never get back researching this, I'll take my virtual chiwawa ;).

I'll try to sum up what I'm reading abt the sound in A.N.

it is variously described as split surround or 5.1..being 5 discreet channels and one of LF..this is now the standard Dolby digital format. DTS or SDDS had 5 behind the screen , 2 in the back and 1 LF.
At different times during the film it collapses to mono and expands to stereo and for dramatic purposes to 5 and back & forth...in a context sensitive manner.

soundtrack won the acadamy award .

Hmm, now what’s for our winning contestant? Bugger all! :D

I haven’t seen Fantasia in years. I saw it around friends on VHS Hi-Fi stereo tape played on his Yamaha AVR Dolby pro-logic on B&W DM601 left and right and I think B&W CC4? I never liked the sound of the mismatched centre.

Surrounds, unknown?
Sub bass Yamaha YST SW-150 couldn’t play low enough or loud enough without bottoming at 40Hz.

I’ll buy the DVD at some point in time, not now too many things on my plate. No not the shape shifting ones, bugger those things. :D

Damn I remember sneaking in with friend to see Tommy (1975) at the Odeon Westover road screen 1 if I recall. The cinema was using the Dolby CP50. Technique to sneaking in is a one house brick placed between the exit doors while one pushes one side of the door inwards. Jam the door then reach inside and lift the bar upwards and your in!:D:bouncy:

I believe we watched it at the back of the cinema.

We all sneaked in too see A Bridge Too Far and Star Wars

Oh I have paid to see Star Wars about week after we sneaked in and sat at the back, I remember it was the cantina scene that I had to leave and get back home as it was getting late. This would have been early December 1977.

This is with THX 80Hz bass management at +10db now I’ll be buggered if I an see where David gets knifed on this. The 50Hz 51Hz is heavy low end that is fanning outwards and completely masks over the mild dramatic sequence.

The EMPIRE Leicester Square played this back with a grizzly jolt http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/smilies/tongue.gif even when the rumbling was shaking the cinema mildly.

It good benefit with some EQ on this graph. I’ll see if I can’t improve the THX 80Hz bass management thingy with the FBQ2496 rather than discretely playing the signal it should work, hmm.

Okay I’ll cut to the case. I’m trilled that Star Trek The motion picture original (1979) theatrical is in everywhere spot on with the original laserdisc edition except it’s the six-track Dolby stereo discrete experience and not that dreadfully abomination (2000) directors’ botched sound edition that sounded like it was re-mixed by a bunch of down and out drunk re-recoding mixers.

The sound is punchy dynamic and plenty of warp factor 10 to push my JBL with fuller pride.

I’ll give it very thorough and detailed A B and C comparison over other versions.

Also A B and C discrete LCRS LFE.1 waterfalls.

Note:To get a slight visible look at the frequency graph I had to increase centre channel by +10db so you can imagine just how weak the earlier DVD editions where. All other frequency waterfalls where recorded at 0db directly from the AVR RCA with all levels at 0db.

Here are a few waterfalls of Klingon bleaching.

First edition DVD is slightly underwhelming

Second edition DVD again shows a weak centre low end while in the above and this one shows somewhat different low end on the other language tracks

Third edition is more exact sounding to the 70mm Dolby THX presentation at the Empire Leicester Square, 20 years ago, Sunday October 8th 1989.

The bleach had me and the whole audience in roll of laughter as it reverberated like an mild aftershock on the original JBL 13KW THX sound system.

Been viewing the shocker horror paranormal thriller The Fury form Brian DePalma for the past few nights.

It’s framed at 1.85:1 W/S colour doesn’t look all bad for film that was made back around (1978). It appeared on DVD region 2 around 2002.I picked up last year for good bargain at HMV for under a £10.00 pounds

Contrast and brightness values look okay its plentifully viewable and also notable for some nice camera techniques by Richard H Kline, A.S.C. (Star Trek the motion picture) and cool John Williams score to open the film with.

Took this sub bass or sw-re-mix with +10db level increase not that I play it this level when viewing the film, I have the level set at 0db. Since the sound mix on the film is a four-track mix there’s no discrete LFE.1 track, so all, I do is switch mode settings to give the soundtrack a bit more creditable impact.

Frequency waterfall of the opening titles that runs for 1 minute 52 seconds

The “new, new” placement of the JBL 4645 along with Eltax A12-R produces a pounding riveting bass that slowly rises as the horns and strings play.

Dialogue and some parcel effects along with occasional music may be heard in the centre, unless you mute left/right. It’s a rather odd four-track mix from this era; check it out its called THE FURY.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/TheFurysw-re-mixDolby40.jpg

Please do not remake this film its cool enough as it is!

Oddly enough the imdb states it’s monaural? So I wonder if its re-mix or original soundtrack elements assembled for re-mix or was there a four-track 35mm mag version released as that was the norm back around the good ole days of 35/70mm magnetic.

I’m still kinder trilled at listening to the trailer in Dolby stereo with a nice JBL 4645 sub bass extension pressure that is finally a bit more uniform in frequency coverage in the “new, new” position

STAR TREK two week exclusive digital Dolby digital run, has finished and is now playing in EMPIRE 2 downstairs and EMPIRE 4 on the lobby floor level., no doubt in digital but, looks those have missed out on the56KW JBL THX experience.

http://www.empirecinemas.co.uk/index.php?tbx_site_id=5

Empire’s manger said it might go back in EMPIRE 1 THX depending on how the next few weeks turn out.

I doubt I’d able to make third viewing as I’m waiting to hopefully pop up for Terminator 4 in THX on June 3rd thou June 3rd seems unlikely at the time.

May be possible towards the end of its two week run around middle of June, depending on money?
Nice kicking shacking sensation down in the 40Hz range with few milder ones crossover over to 50Hz and 60Hz nearing the 80Hz region and the odd sly 30Hz vibrating the sofa.

I’m almost tempted to play chapter 8 Earthquake for 8 minutes, but feel my logical feelings are starting to overpower emotions. :D

Just viewed Valkyrine region 2 DVD and I liked it. Tense gripping suspense based on a true story. The plot to overthrow Adolf Hitler and help give back control that can bring a truce to stop the war.

It’s a high treason stakes with punishable execution if caught!

Framed at 1.85:1 W/S give the film claustrophobic look rather than open wider feel with scope.

Sound was plentifully but also sparingly with explosions but it’s mostly dialogue that carries the story with few occasional dialogue panning moments heard over the LCR fronts surrounds are openly wide.

LFE.1 isn’t as active as some might think its used in hard why when called for so don’t be tempted to turn it up as you might risk bottoming the sub. Set it or turn it down so the bigger LFE.1 hits when called for.

The cast was excellent line of British actors and (Tom Cruise) playing Cornel Clus von Stauffenberg

I’m listening to audio commentary track 1 and afterwards I’ll listen to commentary track 2.

Track 1 is Tom Cruise Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie
Track 2 Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexandra

Other extras
The Journey To Valkyrine
The Valkyrine Legacy

I’ll some R2 screen captures later on along with a few independent frequny waterfalls.

Chapter 23 final assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler! The scene is mostly soft dialogue and ambient effects accompanied with tense score that then goes quiet for few seconds as Hitler is briefed… its then followed by an abrupt sharp explosion that rips the oak table apart with showers of splitters of wood flying around in all-directions.

Saw this once before at the local ABC screen 1 cinema when it first came out. I seem to recall the atmosphere in the cinema was lively enough and some neat cool songs, but the depth wasn’t big in the low end.

Well a second viewing today on the LCD video projector framed at 1.37:1 colours looked okay easy to view over the small screen CRT where image and sound is bit diminished.

The beat on the sub bass extension mode for JBL 4645 attacked nicely with the rhythm of Speed Demon with occasional few slams that jolted me with smile.

Sooth Criminal with its smoother laidback beat kicked nicely while the room was filed from side to side front to back with enveloping front stage and surround.

Just got off the phone with Warner Bros entertainment UK to mention that the mislabelling or text error on Presumed Innocent (1990) stating that its Dolby 5.1 AKA six-track Dolby stereo when in fact its second re-release.

The first edition was released 1999 sound status is Dolby stereo 2.0 AKA (4:2:4 matrix it was never released in 70mm magnetic which would sound neater practically with the John Williams score).

So if anyone stumbles over this or any other DVD alike that you already own and you have some suspicious misdoubt get on the phone and someone well get all the rest of the artwork covers recalled (as that is what I was pointing out to the girl over the phone.)

You can see buy the pictures the artwork cover designs is different. The one on the left is the first edition not that you would notice that and the one of the right is the second edition re-release. Well £2.00 pounds might as well be £1.500.00 for film print that is labelled saying its Dolby SR-D.

I’ll take it back to ASDA with receipt and change it over for another title of the same price LOL £2.00 pounds would be joke to anyone else, but £2.00 pounds is lot of money today….no it’s the principle!;)

I do recall seeing this advertised in Time Out playing at the Warner West End in THX back around 1990.

Frequency waterfall graph of John Williams score for Presumed Innocent end credits. Oh, much, much clearer, that’s pucker that is spot on pucker. Sw-re-mix is used has this is only Dolby stereo 4:2:4 mix.

Thou in cinemas its normally 85db the home can also push it to this level thou some parts of frequency response on the highs may be too bright harsh on the (4 KHz to 8 KHz) range.

Now what if the actually actors where voicing their original dialogue lines within your living room it would be whole different ballgame. Except minus the set that they were originally recording the production sound would be different when the film is re-recoded may have Automation Dialogue Replacement (ADR) I’ve been surprised to learn that some directors choice to use production dialogue.

also some cinemas have different acoustical signatures some have mild echo some have more than others some decay quick resulting in lesser echo and easier to understand dialogue.

Some environments have reverberation/echo some scenes don’t.

A court room will have some reverberation/echo
A subway tunnel will have some reverberation/echo if not a bit more
A church will have will have some reverberation/echo
A desert will have dry sound
A forest will have dry like sound
A canyon will have some reverberation/echo

Am I missing anything out?

Some soundtracks like Goldeneye has neat mix when (Pierce Brosnan) ... James Bond and (Sean Bean) ... Alec Trevelyan / Janus have discussion outside there is some slight delay on the channels that when all added together creates a wonderful echo effect.

Here are a few things I was trying out with Yamaha DSP-100 (last night) signal acoustical processor that has 11 DSP assorted listening modes prefixed and 11 custom user modes.

Some of the modes sound fairly neat some or too much reverberation can render dialogue unintelligible due to the overlapping or less time for dialogue to decay for easy listening.

JBL Control 5 centre channel only since the film is monaural mix. Sound is being picked up by the Behringer ECM8000 placed at the seating location.

Encounter At Far Point introduces the new crew (cast list and more) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094030/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094030/) where the are confronted with an alien life-form who calls himself Q (no it has nothing to do with EQ) who as basically an annoying little bigger interfering with the crew and the ships functions.

There is also another strange discovery on the far point planet where anything you think of appears? What are the people hiding beneath their planets surface that can do all these wonderful extraordinary things?

The image is bit iffy and jittery due to overlooking of the transfer that is farmed at 4:3, full-frame. Colour looks kinder muted contrast/brightness looks okay for this region 2 DVD box-set.

Sound was a lacking huge warp factor depths on this episode may improve as it goes along. Discreteness/isolated sounds appear firmly focused along the LCR while occasional split-surrounds whoosh along each sidewall on my custom JBL Control 1 arrays, while (centre phantom) remains defused and surrounding!

The LFE.1 as Enterprise leaps into warp speed has noticeable mild joint as well as occasional effects elsewhere in the show.

When looking back on show some odd 22 years ago wow how the time as past! The characters we ether liked them or disliked them but I like all I’m not prejudice towards this new syndicate show its proved that Gene Roddenberry can deliver a new bolder Star Trek to the small screen just shortly after Star Trek IV The Voyage Home (1986) hit huge box office record, and who would imagine that years later the Next-Generation would venture to the big screen.

One other pleasing part is the score by Dennis McCarthy who later when on to score Star Trek Generations (1994). Theme by Jerry Goldsmith and Alexander Courage.

stardate 41209.2

The U.S.S. Tsiolkovsky is monitoring a red giant that is about to collapse when the U.S.S. Enterprise receives a communications message from the ship, the bridge crew hears and explosion! When beaming aboard to investigate the situation the away-team finds that all-the-crew is dead.

This show pays homage to the original The Naked Time (1966) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0708473/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0708473/) when under the commanded of Captain James T. Kirk constitution class NCC-1701 where they whole crew was infected by intoxication infection that acts like alcohol on the brain.

The next-generation crew now find themselves faced with the same perils and with the engineering now under control of Wesley Crusher with all the (isoliner optical chips) have all been removed making propulsion control impossible.

What’s more the sun has gone nova and large piece of rock is hurtling on direct course with the Enterprise!

Sound on this show was bit more exciting this time, around. I liked the dramatic score rising to a startled Captain Picard when Commander Ricker informs him, all the crew is dead!

Brought and for the last time I guess as I have no interest in bluray DVD will suffice for now.

I already own first edition released back in 2001, directors cut edition not (the theatrical version nor the special edition) with added scenes and some scenes removed made no sense?

This time around Columbia Sony pictures have released all three versions on DVD and bluray. There is some slight differences in tweaking of the video image from film. There are some issues in the white bright scenes where there is a slight tint of blue background casts a greenish effect that wouldn’t display on film rather than a nice hot white.

The audio seems okay here it, plays loud for what it is, or how it should have for that era. Close Encounters along with Star Wars where the first to use baby boom a double twin track on the 70mm magnetic strip playing the same signal twice over the two inner front channels left-centre right-centre to augment the bass response.

Today this track would be played over the multiple arrays of subs located beneath the centre channel. The 70mm Dolby stereo (format 42) was reconfigured for Superman the movie 1978 (Dolby format 43) which is the first 5.1 although I guess Close Encounters and Star Wars where the first Dolby 4.2 but that wouldn’t make sense since its playing the same track, so basically there Dolby 4.1 since the monaural surround is playing the same track twice for DVD/bluray.

It’s well worth picking up for early vintage Dolby stereo in the discrete form to rumble those JBL speakers!

Frequency waterfalls of the LFE.1 track can’t be really asked to do individual ones as it takes too long to produce.

There’s very little difference between the two formats Dolby/dts. dts hardly ever used here on DVD except for dts laserdiscs.

This moment is from the opening as the eerie strings of John Williams score steadily raises with choir voices just as the boom track comes in to sandy dust storm in (Mexico present day).

Brought X-Men Origins Wolverine region 2 DVD rated certificate 12.

It’s going back to when and how it all started for claw cutting Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is back with Origins in this Marvel comic strip action packed adventure. It also stars (Lev Schreiber) as Sabretooth who also shares a common mutant immortality that takes them on journey though late 19th century and into the 20th century where they meet Danny Huston (William Stryker) who is snatching up mutants for secret government covert operation.

It’s got plentiful of action and listening even when the action dies down for while which was very loud in THX at the VUE West End.

I’ll look at the strength of the frequency response later on tonight.

A few frequency waterfalls shows some predictable good LFE.1 range that played smoothing along the LCR matching JBL control 5 as Gambit deals a good hand that punches Logon out of his seat then deals another wicked hand that has zipper pulsing effect.

One thing I noticed towards the end thou I should have grasped this the first time around at the VUE West End was the nuclear tower collapsing. There’s a sound effect from the Empire Strikes Back I’m sure it’s when one of the Imperial Walkers falls over just after Luke Skywalker disables one of the AT-AT.

I’m also sure the same sound effect popped up in Tomb Raider 2 when truck or car goes over a cliff.

No this is not the Bluray screen captures this is from the region 2 DVD Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines and the same issues also appear on the Bluray so now that I know its plagued with the same issues that is the format because first impressions is what makes it count.

I could do A&B with the DVD/Bluray same scene and put it up on youtube later on in the day.

Still the high resolution is okay but I think its only three-thirds better it needs to go further to make it transparent with the film print nothing less and nothing more and yes we want film grain since that is what its sourced from in the first place.

The chapter mark on DVD is chapter 5.
The chapter mark on Bluray is chapter 3

The studios have really got to pull their socks if they are to produce film like Bluray versions in high definition otherwise its just joke.

Green smearing is viewable on this Poltergeist DVD transfer and I’m sure it would show up on the Bluray I’m counting on it.

How can you not see this green smearing! I think the guys that did the transfers need to see specsavers because clearly they have eye issues.

Now I’ve seen Poltergeist projected once on 35mm and don’t recall ever seeing green smearing over the image other than hot white light.

The Bluray B region looks marginal fair on my LCD video at 1080i on temporary bed sheet at 80 diagonal in 10 foot room width.

Colours look spot on
Brightness spot on
Contrast spot on

The six-track Dolby stereo Ture sounded nice and punchy right down to the impressive Foley work from footsteps to body punches to warp speed cracking the vacuum space barrier to Vulcan collapsing into black hole.

No issues came up. I’m fully pleased with this transfer it reflects closely to what I experienced at the Empire Leicester Square on May 7th via Dolby digital cinema and the 56KW JBL THX sound system.

My system is only small 1.5KW and it’s plentiful enough.

I’m presently listening to the audio commentary session while typing. The director and crew keep making references to DVD so I guess they must be watching a DVD and not Bluray?

The crew sounds cheery while relieving details of each scene of the filming.

The rating for Star Trek gets :rockon1::rockon2::applaud::banana:

My ViviCam 3785 doesn’t capture too well under artificial or low light conditions due to the lens. The image as tint of green due to low light level, what do you expect for £50.00 camera?

JBL 4645
11-16-2009, 03:53 PM
Here are some direct to AVR of the low end from Star Trek Bluray B region, six-track Dolby stereo digital True, AVR is set at 0db.

The screen captures have been taken with my Vivitar ViviCam 3785 from the CRT Panasonic there are artefacts due to way the camera sees the CRT image with over exposed imaging. The image looks perfect the fault lies with the camera as its cheap £50.00 and it’s the only way I can do visual waterfall since my pc only has DVD player not Bluray, so there it is.

I’ve already viewed it on the big screen LCD video projection system and for regular viewing I use the CRT Panasonic 32”

Sequence is chapter 5, 40m 23s the rest of the fleet snaps away with punch in the low end that is mostly over the LCR with slightly deeper slam on the LFE.1 split-surrounds have slightly milder punch as this is the style of the mix.

I’m rather impressed with the mix of the film after hearing theistically at the Empire Leicester Square on May 7th twice in Dolby digital cinema and via the cinemas JBL dbx4800 drive rake Crown amps 56KW THX sound system.

I sat though the first showing, once at front row and centre and once more for second showing at the sweet spot circle, centre line of the Empire it was mega loud and totally out of this world.

After hearing it some 4 times on Bluray I’m not tired of yet, I’m just warming up, with Bluray. The kick maybe a few db less than what the Empire was kicking in my chest at times with jolt of 120dbc and it would differ from cinema to cinema at the Empire as well as in my living room.

The score is filling on Bluray by Michael Giacchino dropping down to planet Vulcan to disable Nero’s drill, and the sonic boom as the crew punches though the sound barrier.

This moment has the highest peak in the film while other LFE.1 effects are at soft level, yet still hard cutting edge.

This presented no issues on the JBL 4645 just smooth deep rolling oomph before Vulcan, finally collapses and disappears.

The way some of the LFE.1 effects accompany Foley effects is rather neat. coming up soon, captain Kirk’s hand?

Up for today’s JBL ultimate test on Bluray is The Bourne Supremacy The Ultimatum and Terminator Salvation. The The Bourne Supremacy The Ultimatum was the only titles that ASDA had (two for £20.00) that’s roughly the cost of coach ticket to get to Leicester Square London to watch a film at the Empire LS which is further £5.00 pounds by tube and £10.00 pounds to get into Empire screen 1 JBL 56KW THX.

Basically that is the way I see it, a good damn deal for £20.00.

Terminator Salvation was only £16.00 a tiny price to pay for high definition and DolbyTrue lossless sound!

I’ll let you know what I think of the Bourne films as I have them on DVD and there should be huge leap of difference over the DVD.

I haven’t seen Terminator Salvation I wanted to go to the Empire and see it in THX but didn’t have enough money at the time, sigh.

Given the Bourne films/Bluray a listen and they along with Terminator Salvation are dtsHDMA sounds wicked!

Plus I can’t hear my new neighbours below, guess they don’t have JBL!:D

The Foley effects of (hand to hand) on chapter 16 is nicely choreographed with Borne jumping leaping from building to building and the leaping though a window head-first to prevent an assassin from knocking off Nicky.

The glass shattering if played on larger JBL cinema PA would be vividly realistic in this case I prefer a bit of audio limiting on the LF/HF fronts while maxiuming the softer quieter sounds.

The beating beats of drums percussion rolling suddenly comes to halt when Bourne cashes though the shattering glass (83dba) at listening area, while dbc was at (89dbc) the impact was felt on my body, as if I was going though the glass with him.

Real glass shattering let me tell you, is LOUD! I’m talking 90dba and its not really comfortable sound to listen too.

Brought Cliffhanger yesterday which I got around to playing late of last night and couldn’t believe it had technical sound issue.

The fronts left and right are reversed making onscreen sound totally opposite to where sounds should be placed.

So when gun is cocked its heard to off screen on the left! But the gun appears onscreen its moving in from the right and that just doesn’t happen in real life, unless you happen to be facing the rear with your head turned away from the screen.

The issue has seen be resolved on the landline where I spoke to (Optimum Home Entertainment) technical department where the chap was very jolly and helpful at resolving the resolution.

They have been aware of this issue since last year, as the Bluray was released around (4th August 2008). There are newer copies out to replace the botched up version and I’m rather surprised that HMV still had some or that some may have been in circulation at warehouses?

Other technical issue is Terminator Salvation, it won’t go past the menu the menu is locked up! I may have to had some software upgrade on my Philips BDP3000 sigh, why, why, why?

Or I can use Jedi mind trick on Sony pictures UK to send me copy that will in fact play!

It played on my friends Sony PS3 and I don’t want a PS3! The console controller is pants.

I have several other Sony Bluray titles and they play fine.

Is this going to be the same issues as it was with DVD where some menus just lock-up yet they play fine on other DVD players.

Take any dual 35/70mm projector and you can play any film anywhere in the world without issues! Sigh.

This regional coding is bollocks for ONE! VHS/Laserdisc in someway was regional coded because some didn’t have an NTSC player or may not have had TV that supports NTSC making the picture unwatchable due to (roll bars) rolling down the screen.

I have the earlier DVD first edition that sounds correct (and my cat Sooty, has this annoying habit of opening my living room door), excuse me.

The Bluray is dtsHDMA so that’s a nice plus, but! The film was never released in dts it was released in Dolby stereo SR optical and 70mm six-track Dolby stereo I think a Dolby SR-D print was also in circulation at the time or it might have just been the Dolby stereo SR. dts was around at the time but dts doesn’t appear on the credits!

Oddly enough (Dolby stereo SR) is in tiny print the logo on the front cover of the Bluray.

Correction the split-surrounds are reversed after muting the LCR/LFE.1 for closer listen and a simple quick re-plug as sorted it! Point is no one should have to do this.

The part where the helicopter lands and the guideline cable bridging between to cliff points has tingly dangling sounds as that cable waves around in the wind on right surround, not left!

At 00:07:45 I can hear the climber pulling himself along the cable sidewall arrays then onto centre front as he appears onscreen left then centre of screen.

Looks great on the LCD at 1080i:bouncy:

Screen captures are from the DVD since I don’t have Bluray pc player only standard Bluray player.

You can see the slight difference in frequency due to DVD speed-up. The Bluray at 24fps sounds infamy better plus the range level is higher and crystal peaky clear!
This is the un-cut version that has some brutally grim scenes not seen on PAL VHS rental or the PAL laserdisc and the later region 2 DVD.

This is the un-cut version that has some brutally grim scenes not seen on PAL VHS rental or the PAL laserdisc and the later region 2 DVD.

Gabe and Jesse quickly descend down along the face of the mountain to escape from bomb, that’s set on a timer. The lows on the Trevor Jones score tensely vibrates nice on the LFE.1 at steady pulse, while gritting my teeth, I hate heights!

Apparently there have been numbers of reported issues with (Terminator Salivation 2009) within the UK about its (main menu). I’ve spoken to Philips consumer UK and they are 100% aware of the issue that has also been reported on Samsung and LG Bluray players, where the films menu locks-up!

The issue lies with the (jarva menu) that has been fouled-up!

I own a Philips BDP3000 for getting on close to three weeks now and have since brought 6 Bluray titles.

Titles so far

The Bourne Supremacy (2204)
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines (2002)

Cliffhanger (1993) which as sound technical issue only that has been resolved, the issue is the left and right fronts and split-surrounds are reversed and unless you have RCA and separate amps to (re-plug) then undoing cables on the back of common AVR will be annoying.

I’m awaiting my replacement Bluray disc to come from (Optimum Home Entertainment UK) :)

Star Trek (2009)

I replaced Terminator Salvation for an afterburning sound classic Top Gun (1986) so I’ll give that spin in jiffy on some of the sound highlights.

Well the issue with Terminator Salvation should be resolved in 3 weeks just in time for Christmas.

Further more I tried two of the same Bluray with Terminator Salvation with the same issue!

ASDA compensated with £5.00 pound gift card which I spent on some food, as you can’t eat Bluray discs!!!

I’ve since called ASDA to speak to the same chap also to thank him, and told him the news on the issue as ASDA has had no recalls of the Bluray as of yet?...unless most happen to have a (Sony PS3) and very few with Philips BDP3000 or LG and Samsung???

Yeah maybe it’s Sony Bluray conspiracy?:D

JBL 4645
12-18-2009, 05:20 PM
Yes my, ears have yet again picked up an issue that will no doubt be on the bluray since this is sourced for the same master.

It’s plainly obvious I’ve got the region 2 DVD box-set. The chapter make is 13 time 64m.55s this is where Sulu leans slightly forwards after receiving new coordinates to manoeuvre over the intruder.

What you should hear is button click on screen left! why this was eluding for so long since I’ve had the box-set for months now. Oh, well if Paramount Pictures are going to mess us around what is the point in trusting these studios to produce 100% transparent copies.

There is another weird one with the Scotty on the intercom left channel chapter 9 time 37m.29s the voice shouldn’t have an echo rather than a dry sound to it.

It’s fortunate that I still have the original on widescreen laserdisc PCM. Sigh.

The more things change. The more they stay the same.

I must say there is something a bit out of place something sly? If you mute the centre there is mild soft dialogue heard within left and right front but its many db down and only happens in few parts of the film where there are soft low level ambient sounds. Its if they have someway manipulated the 4.2.4 mix to give us a fake 5.1 mix.

According to the In-70mm site there was 70mm print stuck but whether this is the true original six-track elements

Most other effects are in the correct locations but I’d have to rate this 97% rather than 100%.

I’ve also listened to other language tracks as some effects tend to end up on foreign language tracks, no sign.

Well due to this I’m now unsure if I should touch the Bluray, because this will enrage further, its just a waste of money and someone is getting too greedy out there!

Right now I feel like kicking who ever the Muppet was that slightly botched this in the nuts! :biting:

Its fortunate I can still hear and was even to pick these effects out on the original 35mm Dolby stereo type A print, at the Empire from 20 meters away from the screen, 20 years ago. Hmm “20” well you might say have 20-20 hearing.:D

I don’t think I can say anything nice about this version! It’s the same sly version that was produced around late 1990’s I think for the dts 70mm version? Then it appeared on region 2 DVD around 2001 and I noticed it even back then, since I already owned the laserdisc with all the crazy dialogue panning over the screen even thou some portions are folded on top of one another over the LCR.

Most of what is on this bluray that is all, the original dialogue panning as been centralized taking away the integrity of the original theatrical mix that was produced for the 70mm format with five fronts and only one single mono surround.

The image well err okay kinder off sigh! If one part of the presentation fails! It all fails! Now then!

What really pisses me right off is these silly fanatical bluray owners that keep saying “lossless" "lossless" is great! and have the gore to tell me a bluray is a must see a must hear! I bet half of these f$*(ks are stone deaf!:biting:

I SAID STONE DEAF!

My views on Bluray has gone from 100% down to 70%. I’m going to keep a low profile on buying Bluray titles if I can help it.

So Tom, if you’re reading this? Bluray isn’t for you, you need 20-20 hearing first off and lossless really it sounds like f*(%^king snake oil!:biting:

Here are samples of different Klingon belches over different versions of laserdisc to region 2 first edition to special edition region 2 to original motion picture collection and Bluray region B original motion picture collection.

When I first saw Star Trek V for the first time at, the Empire Leicester Square presented in 70mm Dolby SR JBL 13KW THX it sounded like, a mild aftershock reverberating though the auditorium that was felt in the seat and over my body.

The output is direct from AVR at 0db level passing directly to the pc.
I have taken tests of centre front and (LFE.1 to see if there is anything within this track.)
Some versions show LFE.1 content with less others show less in on the centre front and others even more over the various language types.

I tell you the laserdisc shows more height on the top portion of the fame but less on the width.

No I don’t have software to do screenshot of the laserdisc but the letter A or part the top portion of frame does show the letter A more cleanly.

Also the colour is a slight issue. These are film studios that can’t do a simple thing as standardization they’d rather show-off and manipulate the image. Thank god cinema still exists!

Also note captain Terrell getting smaller in the frame as the bottom frame opens up, but still someone had to botch the top part of the frame up, with a slight crop.

According to what Van Ling said on home theatre forums about it getting the 16:9 treatment which seems to me, like they have taken the dodgy master rubbish tape and sprinkled with lame bluray graphics to deluded the rest that don’t know what to look for.

It could be 500GB Bluary and it will still look like rubbish.

What they need to do is go back and start all over again from a 35m print and align the video equipment up so that these ghastly looking artefacts don’t even display.

You’d never see this in the cinema! But I guess most of you haven’t even been to real cinema in 10 years and have forgotten what the original medium looks like.

Here are few region 2 DVD THX screen captures note the yucky green smearing :biting: that washes and smears parts of the image detail. There should only be white light as you would see in REAL LIFE.

This is the same as the THX laserdisc PAL laserdisc VHS tape. It didn’t show up on channel 4 when I saw it many years ago, and that was analogue TV now then! They used a different print or a different means of presenting it which would put a bluray to shame.

The Abyss
Titanic
Terminator haven’t given it re-spin for months but 99.999% says its there!
Terminator 2
Terminator 3
Close Encounters of the third Kind
Cape Fear remake
True Lies
Aliens
Star Trek the Motion Picture
Dante’s Peak
Poltergeist

Oh, I can list a whole bundle and it’s a costly deal now to fix this image technical issue.

Star Trek (2009) doesn’t have this nonsense on the Bluray and I’m sure even the DVD is free from this rubbish as well. I have seen dodgy videos of Star Trek on the internet that had (green smearing) as well as reporting the video to FACT because its against the law to steal films!

So, there it is. Poor transference will result in poor looking DVD/Bluray.

Brought a few Bluray’s

Crimson Tide
DolbyTrue
Scope 2.35:1/2.4:1

The Thing
dtsHDMA
Scope 2.35:1

Leon aka The Professional
dtsHDMA
Scope 2.35:1
Theatrical/Director’s cut

I’ve skipped though most of these to see how they sound and look.

Crimson Tide looks fine so far
Sound wow similar to dts laserdisc but since my friend has my optical lead for his PS3 and hardly listens to music mostly gaming so I can’t A & B the difference at the moment…I couldn’t spot anything queer apart from it’s the theatrical version unlike the region 2 DVD that also have which is the director’s cut which I can’t bare to look or listen too.

This one rocks! I can’t be asked to watch in on the LCD video at the moment at1080i looks fine on the CRT Panasonic.

Leon has director’s cut running in at 133 minutes over its Theatrical release.
Image of the two versions looks fine.

Sound on the director’s cut is just painful to listen too! Its got somewhat slight botched out of place mix with slight dialogue bleed-over left front I noticed on the DCX2496 some level on the barograph display (while moving forwards in the sofa to mute the centre) sigh!

Thou it has far more depth to the story with Leno and Mathilda (go door to door looking for the drug dealers reasonable for her family being killed in drug bust), they execute each and every last one.

The Theatrical version doesn’t have any sound issues and I’d sooner watch the theatrical. Also the sound effects on the director’s cut sound embarrassingly too low like some poor TV series from the 1960’s about a bunch of army guys something Garrison? All I can remember was the dialogue was loud and sound effects where quiet WTF! :banghead:

The Thing is running now and it shouldn’t take long to skip though it as I’ve seen it too many times on VHS laserdisc and DVD.

Wow the depth of the things spacecraft in the open roars nicely at 24fps not that horrible 25fps speed up toppy sound lows sound bit lower due to the 24fps rate.

Image looks fine so far.

There is slight same minor issue with tiny db low level of dialogue on the screen right but you’d only notice it if you muted the centre it’s the same issue as the DVD and no doubt the Dolby AC-3 signature laserdisc.

Its not an annoyingly off-putting but I was suspecting this would be same mix, too bad its dtsHDA because that really sucks this film was never released in dts only 35mm Dolby stereo and 70mm six-track Dolby stereo! Get your f%7ing act together Universal Pictures enough of the f%$%king dts on Dolby stereo films!

I don’t mind if its dts and Dolby to give the user consumer the f%8king choice!

The rest of the sound effects are intact like Foley moment of footsteps moving around over the LCR as they are onscreen most of the time.

I’m glad the dodgy artwork cover wasn’t used on this bluray like later DVD edition artwork that was used for the game version.

Also brought the Matrix trilogy for rather reasonable ASDA price of £28.00 not bad given that most single bluray titles will cost around £23.00 to £30.00 pounds the average cost of laserdisc 15 years ago!

I looked at the first The Matrix and it looked good and sounded good that of the same DVD master and no doubt laserdisc which I, still have.

The extras including the original audio commentary that was produced for the laserdisc is on this version including a few more that I believe where on the DVD set that was produced before the bluray title came out.

There is one that has commentary with Don Davis composer of the three Matrix films gives short brief accounts on what efforts where done in the scoring. Too bad the score isolated of dialogue and sound effects isn’t in six-track Dolby it’s a basic Matrix Dolby stereo that still sounds thrilling enough while watching the onscreen action.

Also more of the Matrix music that rock computer type like music can be played with an animated background of the Matrix moving vertical down the screen while the music plays in stereo only or you can switch the AVR to Dolby stereo?

I haven’t looked at the other Matrix films yet as I’ve seen them before on region 2 DVD as well as in the cinema.

It’s still pleasing to hear the sound at the correct 24fps rate for lower lows and less shrilling highs.

But it’s most obvious they can’t be asked to produce cleaner mirror image transfer as I have sixth sense there might be something out of place regarding image. These are the same versions just recycled and produced at higher resolution over standard DVD.

I can’t be asked to watch one on the video projector seen them projected in the cinema. Well maybe sometime soon it’s not paramount to watch them on my own on big screen unless a friend would like to see them?

The Matrix Reloaded Revolutions Bluray

Also saw Superman the Movie at Castle Point HMV at £15.00 but it was that dreadful directors version with the new love it or hate it sound effects!

I’d sooner have true 70mm six-track Dolby stereo 1978 version which they can’t even produce for multi-billion organisation company. Sigh They can keep that bluray! As well as the so called original 1978 NOT! Its got the same sly new sound effects placed in! SIGH who do they think they are kidding! SIGH

A few short discrete Bond waterfall action shot moments chapter 21 where Bond goes after a kidnapped Vesper.

Watch out for the low at around 3Hz wow not bad for region 2 DVD thou I guess the Bluray at 24fps would be an extra 1Hz down.

The left and right fronts are so fully Bondstic the surrounds show strong support but with limited frequency response expect for that one that traces down to 1Hz!?

Centre is front of attention which is why they should be matched because oh my god that is WOW!

The David Arnold score beats furiously away with brass stings and percussion.

One part of the scene that gets my attention on is the breaks locking on the Aston Martin centre back that turns my head just as Bond veers and banks sideward to avoid hitting Vesper as she lies out on the road tied up. The car whooshes past right of the right front just as the music goes to stillness on all channels then as the car starts to tumble around pieces of it braking off then finally comes to rest, with busted up, Bond.

JBL 4645
01-10-2010, 08:36 AM
The surrounds again are running with the audio limiter so I can ether give the level a bit WOW without going out of control because of the threshold level on the limiter setting. It helps on the softer quieter moments and brings them a bit more alive.

The LFE.1 on its own thunderously pounds away thou mildly as there still is a lot more on this Dolby six-track mix before and towards the end it starts to go nuts like an earthquake.

The LCRS sub bass extension is around the same strength that supports the JBL control 1/5 LCR and surrounds without the desire or temptation to making it unbearable too loud.

I might consider this on Bluray might it does seem tempting to have it 24fps with lower lows on DolbyTrue six-track.

The footstep Foley chapter 22 when Bond is carried out the car the footsteps move around on surrounds and front as if your in the middle and hearing the footsteps rustling around the grass.

Thought I’d show the slight difference of the U.S.S. Enterprise giving the Romulan bird of pray a quick phaser pasting.:D Feels good in the living room as rumbling jolt then fades away.

The lows are passing from the AVR to audio mixer. The left and right are summed the centre on its own and the, LFE .1 track included here I haven’t bothered with the stereo surround.

Each one, sounds feels good on its own but when summed the signal doubles. The LCRS sub bass is sent to the smaller sub and the LFE.1 to the larger sub in the room.

The LCR/LFE.1 summed shows subtle difference unless I make increases on the LFE.1 by a few +db it would display a bit different on the graph.

It’s not bad for re-mix for an old monaural TV show and I’m mostly not for the re-mixes but, the original series has been done with great care and thought to where place directional sounds that makes it far more enjoyable.

JBL 4645
01-15-2010, 04:50 PM
I guess you might think I don’t have classic Hitchcock films well only a few that have fantastic stereophonic sound like North By Northwest and Vertigo okay there is Psycho, with chilling monaural sting movement at the opening and the famous shower scene where Bates goes Psycho!
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:sPNwwidQa3eNFM:http://www.zuguide.com/image/Psycho.jpg (http://www.zuguide.com/image/Psycho.jpg)

I was rather surprised thou not disappointed to see the soundtrack going lower than 50Hz since this was long for the days of Sensurround and Dolby stereo but its nice to keep it traditional to the original.

I like the sound of that traditional to the original.

The surrounds on the opening titles have mildly subtle different rhythm during the first few seconds then open up a little to expose tiny bit more, but mealy ambient.

Monaural surrounds envelope around the room like it would in cinema and works exceptionally well with crop duster bi-plane diving down on Roger Thornhill chapter 25.

Leo’s roar is a bit LFE.1 underwhelming on the opening its mostly centre front roar! The rest of the instruments are very low key in LFE.1 Bernard Herrmann’s score is mostly heard LCR with a mild surround in-head least that’s how it sounds here.

I guess you thought I wouldn’t put the crop duster plane in. Yeah don’t be too encouraged like I have in the past at turning the level up, when that plane slams into the tanker truck wham KABOOM!

Less is more otherwise it will sound like the sub is overpowering the rest of the mix.

The dialogue level is very soft level which means an average +80db around peak 85db thou the music is going

A little more on the open Leo’s roar is mildly heard distant like on left and right while its focused centred and not even a hint of his roar on the surrounds. Music is higher on left and right and softer in centre.

Chapter 13 he’s got a knife has people gasping left and right and woman’s voice heard on left call the police is also heard in the centre but might overpower the left. I use little delay centre LF/HF that helps the left and right half pan sounds easily heard.

Of course Hitch always makes short cameo appearance, slightly missed the bus buy a few seconds.:D

The bright yellow orange to red is where Leo roars then tamely calms down as the rest of the score takes over.

Brought a few bluray

Pearl Harbour yes the Michael Bay stinker director! Well at least its got Kevin O’Connell doing the Dolby film mix!

I brought this a few years back on region 2 DVD that presented Dolby technical issue with the Motorola chip in my Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select with (raw Dolby digital only binary pulse noise, and partly the six-track Dolby stereo mix behind the noise.)

Hopefully the bluray will present no issues.

Black Rain brought this once before on region 2 DVD but felt something queer with it. The surrounds sounded a bit weird, thou I’m reading the small text print on this bluray that says Dolby digital-EX? Now that does sound weirder? The film was never released in Dolby SR-D only Dolby stereo SR and 70mm Dolby SR.

Oh, well I’ll see if blows my skirt up when I get around to checking these bluray title out at grease lighting speed!

Total Recall I have the first edition region 2 DVD that seems to have technical issue with the surrounds that sound like they have been f$(_ed up with some kind of filter at 500Hz! Yes all the top range is not there?

Now this is from the renowned f%^uck-up DVD now authoring bluray Optimum Release UK who f$&ked-up Rambo box-set a few years back! Then f%&^ked-up Cliffhanger with reversed stereo fronts and split-surrounds!

Yes they have a knack at f$%^king things right up!:banghead: They do try there best I have to give them, that much credit, but if this is the same slyly same issue as the first edition and not a newer edition that was authored for the special edition DVD which I didn’t buy. The mix is virtually the same without the slight DVD region 2 (snap crackle and pop on chapter 8 where the spaceship thunders overhead on the surrounds).

There is only a tiny trace of getting some HF out of the surrounds and yes bullshit this not how its intended to be mixed! The surrounds sound, I mean smell like stale pair of yesterdays socks!

One tiny bit of advice stay f$%^king clear of Optimum Release UK titles! These Muppets have no right or business authoring DVD/Bluray they just can’t get anything done right!

Also the surrounds are in monaural obviously for the 70mm Dolby format 42 and not format 43 which is split-surrounds. This was common with 70mm titles produced around early mid 1970’s till late 1990’s.

Only few handful where ever produced with split-surrounds.

But its still no f$%^king excuse for these idiots to do a piss poor job, because it reflects badly on their company.

Watching Black Rain right now while LCR/LFE.1 remain muted as I’m only interested in monitoring the surrounds.

They appear to be split-stereo surround. Nice discreteness of effects and occasionally music

There is weird sounding moment when Nick Michael Douglas hustles for some money along the river-side of New York. One of the bikers hands him the money that he just lost on bet. (The rustling of the money is heard on the surrounds equally each side centre phantom).

Chapter 2, time 00:04:54

It’s not the first time I’ve heard strange and exotic mixes that have odd sound placement. There is moment in Crimson Tide that has sound image that is heard on left surround.

The image looks okay over the murky muddy washed out milky colours of the VHS that I still have in its pan & scan form. The film was photographed in super35 not one of my favourite formats its framed in 2.35:1

While trying to enjoy my evening microwave meal! The db level on the surrounds between DolbyTure and (dtsHDMA is +1db) wow! Back to my meal!

I would prefer if dts was only used on films that was exclusively produced for dts like that of the early days of T-Rex, Jurassic Park!

The surrounds have very little directional effects in the meat factory where Nick cashes down a Japanese gangster. Lots of Han Zimmer syth percussion.

There are moments where the surrounds go mute, leaving only the LCR playing. In Dolby stereo all the channels will be constantly active with sound due to the nature of Dolby stereo matrix circuitry.

Chapter 22 Andy Garcia is trapped with gang of Japanese tugs motorbikes whirl around very, very subtlety in loudly chaos way that echoes along the hollow surroundings.

I think Black Rain is worthy of frequency waterfalls later on.:bouncy:

-I can take anything I want?
-Anything.
[Pulls gun from its holster with dramatic music!]

Nice punchy end credits I can see why this was nominated for best achievement in Sound 1989 Oscar®.

Thought I’d fire up the LCD video projector for HD 1080i chapter 21 attack on Pearl Harbour. The aircraft flying in low on the sneak attack pans brilliantly along the sidewall surrounds and centre back gives a startling aerial realism with whirling planes yawing and rolling (barrel role) as they swooping in close to the water and drop a torpedo that zeros in on the U.S.S. I thought I’d watch the colour to framing process of Seven on region 2 DVD no reason to buy this on bluray because if the DVD has been so much manipulated with colour altering then there’s no point wasting more money for a none-original none-mirrored image look.

This shot was very red to start with. So get…the blue out of the sky.
Stephen Nakamura

The telecine used for Seven was Spirit datacine 2K
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecine

This idiot has gone and turned the blue to crap greenish hue! :barf: Never in all my years have I ever seen real blue coloured sky turn like that, unless its cloudy and I see tint of greenish cloud with possible thunder storm brewing overhead.

I forget which in water colour painting that two colours can make one colour its been 30 years since I painted with water colours but its the same thing here one or the other can change the original and we all prefer original because the sky is just not that colour!

The top image is the original look
The lower image is the none-original look

Also the brightness values are lowered making the face look darker in certain areas.

It's also no wonder NTSC is Never Twice Same Colour this Muppet shows-off so much by saying we can turn his face green. No, wow, you don’t say Sherlock!

The only things I think this technology should be used for is cleaning up dirt but keep the grain structure intact as that is inherit on film. Remove wires from old films as wires does spoil the illusion of disbelief or fantasy, like The Black Hole that has so many wire hanging from actors to robots it just looks silly.

Just received ‘2010 The Year We Make Contact’ though the post. Ordered last Friday for £7.99 free delivery from Play247.com, after getting fed up with HMV lousy bluray in-store catalogue and overpricing, I decided to buy online.

The picture is just way more better over the DVD where it doesn’t use 16.9 to enhance image. The film as soft grain look and no DNR digital noise reduction no edge enhancement that often ruins the look of the film.

Colour skin tones look natural, brightness contrast levels don’t appear over done. The openness of the clear sky and large array of discs at the opening looks even sharper both on CRT widescreen and slightly better at still 1080i on LCD video projector.

Dolby digital and DolbyTrue sound better at the 24fps lower lows are felt highs not as shrilly as with the DVD region 2. Its more or less an enhanced Dolby mix while retaining the original style.

I’m pleased with this version for the price for 26 year old film.

I put some extra beef into the monaural trailer diverting the lows to JBL 4645 sub bass output.

I must have played the trailer at least 10 plus times now.:p No make that 12 times. :bouncy:

I thought my suspicious instincts where right! This is a bit of slight re-mix over the original six-track Dolby stereo mix.

Doesn’t matter which chapter I choose but I’ll take a simple one.
Star of chapter 17 DVD
Centre channel has a few neighboured mechanical car effects in the distance that sounds like (hover vacuum cleaner).

The left and right has (centre phantom dogs barking and slight atmospheric ambiance).
Surrounds remain mute until the scene cuts to inside a home of Widow, Mrs. Bowman where the sound of announcer on the centre channel is heard for a Pan Am advisement.

The sound of dogs is then heard distance on the monaural surrounds. That should be enough for those who may not even notice this.

Bluray Region B
Same as above except the centre has partly the centre (left and right phantom sound folded onto the centre mildly of the dogs barking).

The left and right still has the (centre phantom sound of the dogs barking).

Surrounds has partly the left and right same centre phantom dogs barking (thou there seems to be some sly panning to the right surround with 1/3 of the same sound heard on left though you’d have to fade off the right surround to hear this)!

This now boils down to simple fact this isn’t the original intention of the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo release and someone needs there ass kicked for there showing-off at re-mixing the Academy Award nominated best sound (1984) mix with this thing mix?

Listening to the opening chapter 2 it appears who ever the guilty mixer is? This who ever has given it in (stereo surrounds), but not true split-stereo-surrounds since the film was only released in (Dolby format 42) which has monaural surrounds only.

I said it before and I’ll keep repeating it with fierce conviction. Never sale the DVD or laserdisc title!

I wonder if strong email to Warner can get this holy mess sorted it out because this is wrong. Its not true or faithful to the original six-track Dolby stereo mix.

I doubt that 99% of the sites members would even notice this, because you, ether sold the DVD what a shame, or never owned it on DVD and only owned the VHS tape where its going to be very hard to tell with Dolby stereo matrix mix.

I also have suspicion about the look of the LFE.1 which seems to be part of the LCR maybe, folded onto the LFE.1 track and extended slightly thus cheating and disgracing the Bluray format, with nothing more than some poor person working with pro-tools in mommies basement.

I’ll be on the phone tomorrow and Warner better have good excuse for this!

Now tell me. Who’s got the golden ears on this site! ;)

So what it comes down to now, do I play the disgraceful Bluray or the region 2 DVD which has the original mix thou its speeded up to 25pfs does sound disconcerting over the 24fps.

I partly blame (George Lucas and his silly Star Wars for re-mixes) because its like virus that effects mommies geek living in the basement with sod all with his time, and would sooner tamper and ruin original film mixes beyond disbelief. SIGH

Okay what I’ve done is sent centre from the main AVR decoder to the Yamaha DRP-100 seen in the diagram. The centre invent is helped from the left and right from the main AVR decoder.

The role of the task is to get a signal sent to the Yamaha DSR-70Pro Dolby pro-logic to place an anti-phase signal to cannel or reduce the amount of signal on the (centre main signal) which shouldn’t be on the (main centre channel of ‘2010’).

There is downside since the signal will reduce some portions of the signal and (will inject a signal from centre phantom left and right). If there is signal of similar sound / frequency or mirror image it will be cancelled out thus freeing the centre front by a small degree.

The test signal I used was the dts calibration music and demonstration set-up disc (track 14, all-channels) which is a wideband pink noise signal.

I activate the Yamaha DRS-70Pro which sends out the same pink noise that is being sent to left and right front. I then adjust the centre level on the Yamaha DRS-70Pro so that the pink noise will cancel out the centre. Its only reduced (all or part of the lows) mid and highs are reduced down to very faint sound. Reason is the Yamaha DRS-70Pro has limited bandwidth down to 100Hz so tiny bit low end is heard but its reduced most of the directional.

Now before most of you start jumping around up and down, this doesn’t wreak the sound no worse than it already is. This helps by reducing the centre main will still perform most of its original level.

There it is, simple. I guess this can be improved upon with fancier audio electronics.

This can also remove normal half panned sounds from the centre for clearer left and right stereo sound field. Often the phase tends to have you shifting around in the sofa to catch a clearer left and right sound.

I tired this out a few years ago, with ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ (1984) when Foley gets tossed out a window and then cops show-up. There’s subtle effects left and right that had half panned sound filed mixed onto the centre and I found it distracting at the time.

Today I place a little delay on the DCX2496 centre LF/HF to gain a clearer left and right sound filed, or I can extend it further with the approach that I have just shown you.

Hello Tom morning afternoon evening

I do have hobby, its called Lansing Heritage.:bouncy:

My second hobby is my pet cat Sooty.:) (Or then again it can be first hobby or in-between hobby. Studying the mannerism of the, cat).

My other hobby is amateur astronomy which I only do now and then (very now then) depends on the weather I don’t like condensation build up on the optics.

My other hobby is listening so doesn’t make any difference if take a break I’ll still be
listening and since my, friends don’t listen and since they like to play with their PS3 thingy, blowing-up or killing virtual solders on that ‘Call of Duty’ (2 or 3?) wow you need to talk to them there minds are like sieves you can actually filter coffee though it.

Myself I don’t play mindless killing games I don’t care to own an X-box or PS3.

When I do, pop-around their too busy playing these games. That is called being anti-social, Tom.

Here I’m responding to you taking the time to respond to you where my friends can’t be pardon me, f%*(king asked to pop over to see me for a few hours. I often walk over and sometimes my skin condition will be ether itching badly by the time I walk 15 minutes, or my f$&^king groin inner legs bleeding! So does that answer the question?

Maybe you’d like to chat to the Doug TDome about his posting habits. Otherwise yes, LOL I am taking this wrong way LOL just kidding Tom.

lastly if I let down my guard on the listening I become one of them! Them that don’t listen I mean really listen!

I get 6 or 8 hours kip and since we are both in the (Time Zone) I might be posting a few times day sometimes a whole lot, lot. Today I think I’ve only posted around 5 or 6 times, I’d have to check with today’s posts by my username.

Well I’ll still be online the rest of the night in fact whole week 24/7 that’s because, I don’t hardly log-out unless, I’m restarting the pc or other.

As for cycling its nice keep fit like swimming and there is swimming pool directly across the road from me, that I used to attend with the school some 30 years ago. LOL But since I have skin condition and yes shy, very shy so please don’t upset me again with this BS I like being on this site even when, each or one of us has gotten out the wrong side of bed.

I got out the right side this morning. well point of fact left side since the right side of the bed is against the sidewall and near the back wall. So I got out the left side LOL.

But got out in a relatively good mood that’s why there has been less bucket mouth from me today. Well only few? Foxtrot, Uniform, Charlie, Kilo, Indy, November, Gulf. :D LOL

I haven’t used (phonetic alphabet) since the CB radio days, wow 24 years.

See I have another hobby (phonetic alphabet) no I’m not taking the piss, I feel happy being here. And my f$&^king hands are now aching LOL.:D

As for girlfriend hmm, there goes my freedom and discretion of listening and if I where to get girl fidgety at 3am then it doesn’t work because if I get any idea when sleeping I might like to try that idea out.

So no rule number 1 no girl, no I’m not homosexual I’m very straight and yes I like banging older girls, for sex if that answers the question? Yes I do occasionally, wank-off if that entertains you, (or anyone else peeking in on the thread)?

^^^^:rolleyes:Oh, right. Now I’m thinking of letting you hear firsthand what this sounds like. This will take me an hour to two hours depending on how fast I prefer.

I’ll make short video of DVD 2010 original Dolby mix centre channel only so you can hear what it sounds like on its own.

I’ll do the second video of the Bluray 2010 as it is without the anti-phase centre being added

I’ll do a few scenes so you get a general idea, since most yes most don’t listen or know just how discrete the centre sounds on its own?

Wow, wow, wow 10 out of 10 for The Hurt Locker it was intensively intensified sinking at times grittily pulse rising.

I had to reduce the level of the LFE.1 track down touch during the opening as I had sixth sense this was going to go down low and very dynamic in level.

The use of the sound field voices panned over the LCR and occasionally onto the split-stereo surrounds totally encompassed around listening area. I could almost taste the dryness of the desert openness.

This was an eye opener, on what it takes for bomb disposal troops working in Iraq.

I kinder lost my appetite as some of the scenes was just shocking, the kinder thing you’d see on the news.

One little gripe I have is the dtsHDMA the end credits clearly shows Dolby digital. Optimum Release could at least put two digital tracks for the consumer to chose.

Other than that it was flawless mix. It stands good chance of winner best sound. We shall see on the BIG NIGHT?

One last thing Kathryn Bigelow for best director, wow!

Well that’s if for today I’m relaxing with original Star Trek series on DVD now so I’ll get around to the “Inglourious Bastards” tomorrow what to give me nerves and ears a rest.:D

Inglourious Basterds was bloodedly twisted and bizarre.

This is one that I can’t even watch again. Overlong too much centred dialogue no crazy dialogue panning wow I seriously got stiff bored at times waiting for bloody onslaught bloodbath which really didn’t come till the end.

Wow at 2 hours 22 minutes (The Wilhelm Scream) was placed on the sound of falling Nazi out bell tower.

I’d find it tense at times but it really dragged at the opening and in the middle.

The explosively ending with the cinema going up in smoke due to extremely flammable film, god damn the LFE.1 belted out a large that felt like earthquake.

LFE.1 was sparingly used while LCRS produced most of the low end.

The part when “Putting out fire” by (David Bowie) featured in Cat People (1982) was bizarre nice touch it sounded better then region 2 DVD end credits, without having to play the DVD as I heard it many times before.

So I have to give the sound a fair 7 out of 10.

Even Sooty was nodding off and he gives it 1 paw rating.

In might consider doing a few only few tiny waterfalls because this really did bore me to tears.

The image was nice in scope 2.40:1 sat at the front, running 1080i on the LCD video projector colour flesh tones looked deep and vivid and the red colours looked nice.

It felt like most of Quentin Tarantino films Pulp Fiction Reservoir Dogs same thing just being rehashed chapter 1 :snore::blah:

Just received the high rising action adventure classic The Towering Inferno (1974) and wow nicely produced with towering features of extras over the substandard region 2 DVD that I’ve had for number years.

With glittery all star cast Steve McQueen The Chief Paul Newman The Architect with William Holden and Fay Dunaway its night that they won’t forget.

I must say Irwin Allen is the grand-master of suspense of water, fire and even bees! http://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/imported/ohnoes.gif

Picture
I’ve previewed it on the LCD video projector at 1080i and wow the colours and depth sharpness stands out fantastic bolder over the region 2 DVD. The scope 2.35:1 is opened wider over the DVD.

Sound
I’m also re-listening to the individual channels while muting LCR/LFE.1 and listening to how monaural surrounds fair. Well not, the usual common crosstalk you’d get with front matrix crosstalk spraying over the surrounds the music and effects are isolated from the front stage and kept where they should be.

Also the fronts are intact with all the crazy wild dialogue panning placed where a performer is standing or moving over the (left centre right stage) this crates a realism rather than having centred all the time.

Theodore Soderberg who has worked on several Irwin Allen features and many others has impressive track record as sound mixer.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0812029/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0812029/)

There are also (there are hard left and right pans as well as (half pans that are placed slightly on the outside of the centre and in-between the left and right) might be rather hard to hear unless you’re aware of it on the mix.

I still get Goosebumps with John Williams score on chapter 29 as fire-chief Steve McQueen looks down at burning skyscraper, someone pass me the oxygen please lol.

The DVDbeaver as nice assorted range of screenshots of all previous versions on optical disc
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...dvd_review.htm (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews21/towering_inferno_dvd_review.htm)

Since its released by Warner Bros and the dtsHDMA which seems to be standard use with 20th century fox I have no problem with this since its clear shows its age but that’s how I like it. Keep at as original as possible without re-mixing it too far where most films tend to get all the dialogue panning condensed down to centre front.

Its premiere house Road Show release was 5-perf 70mm six-track magnetic stereophonic (Westrex Recording System) that was, consider being Rolls Royce of cinematic sound.

Note LFE.1 is kept mild and may require a level boast but use caution and remember to turn it down afterwards.

The Towering Inferno was released in the UK on (January 30th 1975) which I saw with my dad. There was also another disaster film already showing in the cinema above in Sensurround “Earthquake” that has been playing since (28th November 1974) and didn’t see Earthquake until a few days after The Towering Inferno which caught my attention during the intermission on the towering inferno at around roughly 1 hour 14 minutes. This is where a gas leaks sets off an explosion both rupturing the concrete and the stairwell.

Above my head some few minutes into the intermission was defocused hard to pinpoint low muffled rumbling! That would be Earthquake in screen 1 while The Towering Inferno played in screen 2.

Clocking in at (2 hours 44 minutes 52 seconds) this is film/bluray that I, can give multiple viewings without getting tiered of it.

The Towering Inferno gives the JBL control 5 / 1 and JBL sub a towering vintage sound workout.

Hat’s off to fire-fighters worldwide who daily, risk their lives, so that others may live and this is testament to those brave fire-fighters.

Rating for bluray

Screenshot are from region 2 DVD since I don’t have bluray-drive for pc screenshot so I have to use the DVD for screenshot on powerDVD.

The level on the AVR is set at 0db and 0db on the LFE.1 track so you can see its rather small and needs a bit of careful extra +db level boast. The level was set at 0db on this waterfall and shows a fair jolt impact possible a slight re-mix of the low end since sub bass wasn’t mandatory on 70mm prints expect for Earthquake early 1970’s and then it became standard around 1977 with Close Encounters and Star Wars know as “Baby Boom”.

While sat at the front I, can feel jolt like oomph as the force of the explosion blows elevator off its track. The wind has blustery effect as the elevator wobbles around hanging by one cable and yes it tensely grips me as Liselotte Mueller falls backwards out the broken window makes my skin crawl.http://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

I don’t mind a bit of fire or water its Irwin Allen’s use of heights that makes me, feel unsettled I’m fearful of heights even a few feet at times.

Also the other plus is the 24fps rate wow lows are lower highs less shrilly and yes more accurate cinematic sounding over the ghastly PAL speed-up.

So within the 40Hz to 50Hz range it’s going to give mild or depending on how you present the film for playback depends on your know-how as some films can do with a little extra enhancement, but don’t get too careless watch for the highest level peak and keep it within the technical tolerances of the amp driving the sub, (clipping is the last thing you want).

Chapter 11, time, 1 hour 30 minutes 17 seconds

"Snake's" footsteps appear left of the front as he walks away while the (American Bandstand) plays in far distance left, while echoing over centre and right and surrounds.

We "Snake" removing the tape, but there is no sound which is missing! We see Snake throwing the tape and that part is heard when it lands on the concrete base.

Going back to the laserdisc the sound of the tape landing the concrete base has softer sound as sound of it lands more or less at the same music beat that is tapping away, but its only faintly audible in the centre channel.

Now if you listen to the second audio commentary track (Debra Hill and Joe Alves) you’ll hear the faint sound of the tape being pulled out towards the end.

Never sale your laserdiscs off, you’d be fool to do so, now then!

Just received Blue Thunder this early morning and what can I say about except never surrender your laserdisc or DVD, not if someone offered you a million pounds/dollars.

Blu-ray format friend or foe? The re-mix!:biting:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/attachments/united-kingdom/14022d1265975553-blue-thunder-1983-fake-bluray-blue-thunder.jpg

Since buying this so called format “perfect picture sound” consumer medium to end all other video consumer mediums it is not!

The biggest issue with the format is the studios who control and who are destroying vandalizing their own classic films

So far I have around 2 okay that might seem quite insouciant. (I assure you all) this is going to get much, much worse as they keep producing old film titles with original six-track Dolby stereo mixes

2010 The year we make contact (1984) has left and right front (phantom signal folded onto the discrete centre channel).

Also the same signal from the fronts has been (folded onto the surrounds) creating (a fake split-stereo surround) this can not be undone by the consumer. (The paying consumer) who might not even be aware that he/she has just been deceived by the studio with a fake like Dolby/dts 5.1 BLU-RAY!

This morning I received Blue Thunder and it only took me, less than 2 seconds flat out! To listen to chapter 12 with left and right and surrounds both muted!

The centre channel should only carry (Foley and sound effects)! (Not music)! The music track is only mixed onto or fades into the centre channel as and when the original mixing them wants it there!

This makes it hard to hear other faint like sounds on the centre discrete plus it also masks other low end bass sounds such as (score) that has different mix, over conventional Dolby stereo 4.2.4 mixes where it would be near to impossible to tell.

Bluray standards by studios is a total disgrace to old classic films and this is how (we the fans are treated)!

The original monaural surrounds produced for the film only fade in when called for (hence the term discrete)! Now they are active all the time because the so called total idiot who produced this with total load of rubbish as utterly destroyed the original Dolby stereo mix.

Where the surrounds sometimes should (only carry music and few effects) now carries left and right stereo fronts folded onto the monaural surrounds making it very hard to detect true discrete.

I think the term DolbyTure is joke! It should be called DolbyFake! and this is only down to someone who thinks, he knows better how to re-mix.

Wow I leaned how to do basic mixing a music and technology college its not a big deal to learn basics. But who ever did this is total f$*()king amateur and I want his NAME!

I don’t want to be compensated with money back! I want SONY PICTURES UK! To personally send me a replacement with the original mix like that on the (first edition region 2 DVD)!
I want this so called idiot fired from his job, because what right does he have to re-mix this film into a holy mess!

Its like listening to Dolby stereo 4.2.4 because if you mute the LCR and listen to the surrounds you can hear parts of the original dialogue faint in the distance like in (chapter 15, time 01:31:12) the original mix had parts of the flight controller and the pilots voices many db down in the mix on left and right fronts, while it was many db up in the discrete centre with total different signature sound.

I presume all, that the US version and many more alike are the same I assume it all!

Listen to first edition DVD chapter 14, time 45 minutes 32 seconds, where Roy Scheider character (Frank Murphy) has recurring nightmare of his days in Vietnam.

The centre carries vocal breathing and mumbling moaning sounds of his nightmare.

As the dream fades to frontal view from a helicopter we then hear what sounds like an argument of Vietnamese solder, that is then thrown from the helicopter, his scream is loud and clear in the centre!

The left and right fronts carry music and a disoriented sound of the rotor blades, with snyth high frequency music, as the solder is thrown from the helicopter the music has mild sudden rise drums beating fast, then music starts to fade back as we see (Frank Murphy) and his girlfriend (Kate) looking at him.

The monaural surrounds carries an almost similar sound of the fronts to immerse around the audience or listening at home in a (six-track Dolby stereo form).

Bluray region B (chapter 7, time 00:47:25)

Centre channel so called discrete! As the same sound almost except the rich discreteness of (Frank Murphy) breathing and mumbling moaning sounds now have music content play over it!

LMAO at same chapter 7, time 00:48:02 where (Kate) looks at him in worried way we hear (Frank Murphy) moaning like he’s having a sexual orgasm, http://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/redface.gif :smsex:I kid you not! WTF!

So not only has it had sounds folded from stereo front onto the surrounds its like someone as looped over the scene again and is taking the piss with the films soundtrack.

The left and right front has more of the original mix in some parts except the sound of augment has been slyly folded from centre and dumped onto the left and right fronts!

When the Vietnamese solder is thrown from the moving helicopter its the same dramatic rise in music, then slowly fades down in the mix, with distant sound re-mix of the solders scream.

The surrounds has higher sound that is far too in my face. The Vietnamese solder augment is heard (with centre back turned on) falling away into the distance centre back after its been panned subtlety over left and right surrounds, I had to make sure what was happening with these so called split-stereo surrounds.

The extras seem worthy for £8.99 sigh. That’s roughly the cost of average cinema ticket, except I want the whole original Dolby film mix. They could at least kept the original six-track Dolby stereo mix intact along with re-mix or decent re-mix because this one sounds like it was put together by 15 year old in mommies basement.http://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/redface.gifhttp://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/icon_mad.gif

Quote from the Bluray review http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Blue-T...y-Review/5031/ (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Blue-Thunder-Blu-ray-Review/5031/)

Blue Thunder rumbles onto Blu-ray with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. This mix offers an active sound field; the film's opening jumble of radio chatter may be heard emanating from every corner of the soundstage, and there's never a lack of back-channel information. Throughout the film, the sounds of helicopters may be heard buzzing about the soundstage, the rotors sweeping across the listening area with fair level of volume and clarity. Minor ambience also finds its way into the mix, offering a fairly realistic sense of space in the less aggressive sequences. A chase sequence near the end of he film makes for a fantastic listen; choppers maneuver through the soundstage, gunfire erupts with authority, and it's all accompanied by a powerful low end that completes an engaging aural sequence. Dialogue delivery is smooth and intelligible throughout. Blue Thunder makes for another high quality lossless soundtrack from Sony.

^^^Well the reason why he was hearing it, from every corner was that he was unaware of the original mix that he obviously didn’t listen to before judging this.

Right now I’m, listening the original "Blue Thunder" (1983) on DVD region 2 with the LCR/LFE.1 muted the art of the monaural discrete independent surrounds just sounds like it does in70mm. It just makes me cringe listening to bluray while image is smart only one part of the 50% that makes up a film has been ruined for my, enjoyment, no thanks to SONY PICTURES BLURAY UK!http://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/icon_mad.gifhttp://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smilies/imported/angry.gif

I was also thinking about buying "Glory" (1989) on Bluray and since its from SONY PICTURES BLURAY UK I fear the same issue! The re-mix of the stereo fronts being folded onto the split-surrounds as the first edition has tiny hint of stereo surrounds (on sound effects only).

The score element on the surrounds is in monaural while it does carry in stereo over the front left and right with different signature mix in the discrete centre.

Yes I take home cinema and even cinema listening very serious, I don’t just go and slouch in seat I’m upright and listening!

Wow the chapter 24, 79m 42s the score cutting in on monaural surrounds on Blue Thunder region 2 DVD fantastic, parts of the overhead effects like when passing underneath a bridge or a discrete sound Blue Thunder passing overhead wicked!

Only those who slouch in seat at home or at the cinema are poor listeners!

I have witnessed this firsthand with my friends all they want is to show-off they have home cinema, and when I quiz them afterwards they have very little clue?

They might as well just have flat screen with tint 1 inch speakers!

Wow the build up of tension chapter 26, time 87m 24 with kittle drum beating discretely on the monaural surrounds as the heat-seeking missiles home in on Blue Thunders heat exhaust.

The explosion is only carried out over LCR (no LFE.1 content at this point) most of the bass mid is carried by the LCR as it should be.

While my cat Sooty sits in front of me, on the desk I get more thoughts.

Bluray is not the original HD medium not while most of us are getting slyly ripped off on lousy picture, despite having a finnier clear resolution of image, the colour balance on most is miles off the mark of HD standards.

I only have probably but few titles new releases of films I don’t see much of an issue, since they are new telecine mastered, I somehow find that word “mastered” offensive.

Well I hope they don’t f$^&k up “Avatar” (2009) when it gets its Bluray/DVD release around summertime is the rough prediction?

I was thinking of theme that I haven’t looked at in full and that is helicopters in films particularly six-track Dolby stereo ones as early as Superman The Movie that had neat whooshing of rotor-blades during the trilling moment on top of the Daily Planet where Superman saves the day.

I was thinking this to help me nod off for a few hours’ kip as my, “tinnitus” has been driving me up the wall for the past 5 days or so. It’s milder this afternoon maybe I need some, orange juice?

Right I was thinking of all the titles that have helicopters be it on laserdisc DVD or the odd few sigh Bluray, I’ll forget about “Blue Thunder” the original mix on DVD is the definitive version.

I’d have to go to the bedroom and look at all titles while taking down (shorthand text of titles) because I must have hundreds?

Some have unique mixing that creates the illusion in dramatic sequences and some very subtle used for short period of time.

Well kinder cooled off after some real ultimate Bluray classic stinkers that are only fit enough for the cat litter.

New today or rather they’ve been out for year or many mouths now are.

Grease DolbyTrue 5.1 the mix is identical to the first edition region 2 DVD and THX laserdisc, I was kinder fearing the rubbish stereo folding taken from left and right fronts and folded onto the existing stereo surrounds, or on top of the centre discrete. None of that nonsense detected here.

I’ll most likely re-watch around British summertime.

Casino Royale Dolby digital and PCM 5.1 uncompressed only thing is I need a new AVR for the uncompressed 5.1 mix not that I’m missing anything. The 24fps rate sound good enough with the sounds many startling action sequences.

We Were Soldiers Dolby digital-EX and dtsHDMA-ES haven’t listened to yet and I’m sure the mix is as the same as the first edition region 2 DVD that I have.

I’m still listening to “Casino Royale” with (stereo surrounds with centre back) only.

Sooty keeps looking up at the surrounds LOL because they are so wide apart on each side of the room and spaced along the sidewalls it grabs his attention most times.

Just arrived today for only £2.99 “The Conversation” (1974) directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It’s the story of bugging surveillance expert Harry Curl (Gene Hackman) that unravels a record conversation that, he has been paid to do, by a client to spy on two people and provide the recoding to its client, is now become too dangerous.

It’s a slow ride film mostly ambient sound with occasional now and then loud sounds that surrounds Harry’s world. Harry’s pastime pleasure when not doing the job is, listening to jazz while playing his saxophone.

Colours contrast and brightness levels weren’t all that bad for this DVD copy. Framed at 1.85:1W/S it holds the tension together even in tight corners while Harry bugs a hotel and crawls underneath a washbasin in a bathroom, I found myself right there with the action.

It’s a film I’ve seen before many years ago thou not as nice as this in the terms of the sound mix. I’m not really wild about re-mixes but this one seems to work well. Its not an overdone re-mix its fairly reserved laidback with a smooth mix of isolated sounds that play nicely on the surrounds that didn’t draw too much attention to themselves.

Fair use of left and right fronts of music and effects mostly montage of music assembled nicely by Walter Murch. effects music and (most dialogue is centred throughout the running time).

The film starts of faint sounding and slowly rises in level after the opening title have finished.

LFE.1 seemed like it was an extension on the original mix to heighten tense moment, not groundbreaking LFE.1 it was mostly low level.

Personally I would have been happier with a monaural mix as its not really and effects type of film.

Audio commentary sessions, with (Francis Ford Coppola) and (Walter Murch) should be nice, I’ll get around to listening to them later on. I’m sure it would be insightful on this classic film.

Also Gene Hackman reprised his role years later which I have on DVD Enemy Of The State (1998) with Will Smith who gets messed up in some dodgy stuff. I’ll have to watch both back to back at some point.

Presently listening to, the audio commentary with Francis Ford Coppola mentioning (wiretapping) and the Watergate scandal early 70’s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_scandal which is another example of being bugged.

Interesting were Coppola mentions David Shire solo piano score which is the only musical instrument in the film score. It’s lonely sound that reflects around Harry’s character, the lonely private guy.

ARE YOU BUGGED?
http://www.pimall.com/nais/n.n.eaves.html

Interesting part in the final where Coppola mentions three theories that are both wrong is where is the bug? I know for fact where the bug was placed and its in the stories plot if you watch carefully. This drives Harry to point of stripping his flat, right down to the floorboards.

The price as dropped to an even “closer encounter” £16.00 which is just right!

The scene where the U.F.O. beams the blinding bright hot light over Roy’s company truck looks better now, just like what it should be. wh

Early PAL laserdisc and other early editions on region 2 DVD exhibited over bright image or poor brightness/contrast/colour balance with (green casting out on the edges of the whites) now looks perfect. Why they just couldn’t have done this years ago…seems like a video conspiracy.

The only other benefit is the wonderful six-track Dolby stereoTrue is the 24fps rate. Lows are lower and highs not as brittle on the top end.

Close Encounters sounds neat on the multi present x10 JBL speakers. The centre back surround isn’t used here since the surrounds have been kept in there (original monaural surround form) that envelop around the front middle and rear surround field with uniform coverage.

The lows are what they are for vintage Dolby Stereo classic mix, too bad we can’t have Star Wars in the same form on Bluray as they shared sound effects editing between them and best sound for Star Wars Dolby mix.

Rare use dialogue panning now and then makes the film look and sound even more fantastic.

02:02:05 when the aliens select Roy, the score takes on nice sweet harmony of choir voices and string movement that’s coming off the LCRS with an, uplifting effect.

The interior of the mothership where the score again reaches a high emotional rich musical quality that sparkles nicely as the choir voices and strings rise and then go mute…playing “When You Wish Upon a Star” brings tears to my eyes, then beams of white light comes raining down that is felt.

I’m a big softer :p when it comes to scores like John Williams who is the scoring master of thrills spills action drama and sci-fi / fantasy alike.

I kinder prefer the 1977/80 special edition version also the way the film ends on the end credits as it replays “When You Wish Upon a Star” seem to give the film a fitting conclusion.

Unlike the region 2 DVD edition ware the films are spread across three discs with extras on each, DVD disc. Here the all three versions of the film are sandwiched onto a single bluray disc.

Extras are covered on a second bluray disc.

Audio commentary would have been a plus factor from Steven Spielberg, Richard Dreyfuss and Douglas Trumbull oh well guess we have to wait till they re-release it again in 2017 40th anniversary. sigh

Well looks like the new firmware works! Since re-buying the bluray since it locked-up on the main menu last year due to unforeseen technical (Java script error).

Can’t really be asked to watch it at 1080i looks fine on the Panasonic CRT 32” widescreen. 2.40:1 scope filmed in super35.

The story leaps forwards to future war thought by the resistance. Man against machines “terminators” programmed to destroy mankind. Story starts off just before “Judgement Day” (Sam Worthington) of “Avatar” plays Marcus Wright who’s been sentenced to death by lethal injection is given a second chance to live by donating his body to “Cyberdyne”.

It’s a fast if not loud action adventure that shouldn’t sweat a hard JBL sound system even with my modest JBL set-up it behaved and preformed quite well with max loud passages at 85db at seating position.

Subs have since been re-tuned so that the LFE.1 doesn’t really go over the mark with just LCRS playing. Sub bass extension LCRS has been reduced so that max level is within or fits within the each of the LCRS directional channels.

I was kind of expecting some insane levels on the LFE.1 that didn’t seem to go too far down on the infrasonic level. LCRS seemed to have band limited mix for the film even with, (Chapter 6, time start 00:37:31 stop 00:38:46) shows just how far the scene goes. I could sense the low footfalls of the giant terminator stomping around, when all of a sudden its arm punches though a metal roof grabbing a woman and just about anyone else that wasn’t going to resist (for labour use to build terminators).

It’s a chaotic moment people running and screaming cars running away from the onslaught. Several expulsions and footfalls are felt as Kylie Reese star and Marcus, flee the scene before being captured.

I couldn’t be asked to use the centre back surround just the regular sidewall surrounds kept action effects, rattling metal falling and horn groaning sound of the giant terminator. Voices are heard all-around and soft hint of ambient atmosphere in the sound field.

Other effects up front over the left and right low level rumbling as the (GT) that’s giant terminator nothing to do with "JBL GT series".:D

Lots screaming in near field and echoing yelling in the near far field distance. There’s a vehicle that pulls out with its horn honking on right with half pan in the centre before it finally leaves right front passing by centre and driving off to left.

Centre mix dialogue effects and music nicely balanced even when left and right and surrounds are playing at the same time. Some portions of the dialogue can be loud at times but not unbearably loud, max level that I’ve allowed for is 85db.

There’s a directors cut that I saw around my friends with my first copy of Terminator Salvation that was played on his PS3.

The version I watched was the version I missed at the Empire Leicester Square, guess it would have been chest pounding seat quake rocking.

I’ve found yet another poorly transferred film this one on DVD “Batman Begins” (2005) and to think I was 95% close to buying this on Bluray from ASDA for £10.00 this week.

Nope I don’t like the (green smearing) also the brightness is too high and this can’t be undone on the consumers end without some drastic trade-offs in the colour. Are these people professional or amateur?

This is not how I recalled seeing this in the cinema. I’ll give the Bluray a miss for now, until someone gets there eyes seen too and the brightness levels reduced.

The Fury 1978 a Brain DePalma nightmarish psychological thriller that tapes into the mind of special talented people to move objects with the thoughts of their minds…

Well the sound mix is interesting four-track with a difference over most four-track as well as six-track mixes. Centre often carries music and effects or depending on what the director or mixes have in mind?

Sometimes a (breathing/panting) sound like that when Amy Irving sees bodies been thrown from a top floor window towards the end of the film.

The body falls impact is interestingly low, with body impacts on (left and right front). Now unless you’re standing on the ground floor with your hands on the ground! I’d say it would be near to impossible to feel the impact low end (thud crunch) but it does make for an interesting Foley effect.

The imdb sites states it was monaural release. So, ware the four-track version came from is anyone’s guess?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077588/

The JBL 4645 sub and the Eltax A-12R have been raised a tiny fraction off the floor with some timber beams placed underneath each sub that extends towards the sofa ware its rests on the timber beams.

A noticeable difference in the sub bass lows, as the signal is vibrating/travelling the wood and given an extra buzzing feel to the soundtracks low end.

Its not yet been perfected as I still need to get a load more timber and MDF 8x4 sheets to outfit the flooring.

Okay then call me a “dog” then I, brought the bluray “Stargate”.

The picture transfer is just sickening (green smearing) in most parts of the film. I compared the THX laserdisc which I’ve had since it was released early 90’s. The image is just shade higher on bluray and I’m not talking about this load of bollocks nonsense 1080i/p.

If the colour balance is incorrect then film is going to be light-years off the mark.

Perfect format seems like the same old bullshit. I hope some major studio is reading this.

The extra’s on the bluray has same footage only at (different colour values) one impractically looked close to theatrical but the (laserdisc DVD and Bluray) transfers are “light-years off the mark”.

The image is still watchable. They could have made totally brand new telecine with colour balance that is on par with the cinema print.

The sound mix dtsHDMA wow it was loud when called for softer whispery sounds sounded clear (as long as I can hear)?

There was slight botched with bluray on theatrical

(And yes that f%(:banghead:)king dog is still barking)!!!!!!

Chapter 1 time, 00:04:47 into chapter 2 (lasting 2 seconds) this is where the screen fades to black with the Cairo scene to (present day) there is lapse in the sound as if drunk piss poor projectionist left some 48 frames out!

SIGH.

After great deal of frustration with the LFE.1 as it’s a rather unpredicted discrete channel that can get out of hand and send the LFE.1 sky high over the LCRS.

I’ve set the THX bass management to -30db and turned up the level on the Alesis RA300 just touch more so the level keeps within louder insane dynamics at decent comfortable level that merges seamless alongside the sub bass extension LCRS.

Star Trek 2009 is one of many offenders when the starships go to warp!

Also the lower quieter softer LFE.1 moments rumble nicely (smooth).

It would be easier to show frequency waterfall (A and B with THX bass management off/on) after I’ve seen “2012” hope the colour balance is professional!

Some bluray have what is called (BD/Live). I'm least bit interested with it but the feature is so annoying when you press the (stop button) you have to reload the bluray. On this version it just goes straight back to the last moment.

Just finished watching 2012 and I’m happy to say I was surprised about the ending…hmm, very surprised indeed.

The visual effect’s was just wickedly wild. Heavens above how many visual effects where used in this film?

I was slightly displaced with image look while viewing it first time on the video projector at only 1080i it looked pastel and only after reading the end credits that was rather long…”Panavision Genesis”. I’m not a huge digital film fan of this format.

Other films that I have on DVD/Bluray that was filmed with or partly with “Panavision Genesis”

Mimi Vice
Collateral
Public Enemies
The X-files I want to Believe (parts of night time shots)
Apocalypto

The dtsHDMA or raw (dts bit stream) being outputted the to AVR sounded ear, bustlingly loud around 90db mark.

Stereo surrounds had some nice directional sounds that merged with the fronts during some of the chaotic loud sounding moments of the destruction of California sinking into the Pacific ocean, that kinder made me cry a little bit.

It’s not an uplifting, film it’s the end of the world thing.

There were parts of the dialogue that was slight on the soft side during the quieter moments, could have been mixed a bit louder.

LFE.1 was soft thou it could have been the THX bas management -30db level that was set for Stargate which sounded okay and I re-tried it with Close Encounters and it sounded fine.

I’ll have to see what Spectrumlab shows when re-viewing the film again sometime over the weekend.

LCRS sub bass extension was plentiful.

There was part in the film that I watched three times because it made me laugh with her Corgis.:D

Screen shot is with my dodgy digital camera because I don’t have bluray drive for the pc for direct screen shots.

Is this now the future for the original moving image medium.
Dark scenes just look like some cheap crappy episode of “The Bill” on rubbish British TV!

1080i want make for a better image. God knows how lousy and amateurish this must have looked at the VUE in a THX screen!

No I’m not a fan of Panavision Genesis think the format should be banned and only genuine 35 or 65mm should be used.

I found something of interest to compare against Bluray! Actually 35mm film cells haven’t noticed any 70mm film cells as of yet. This would be interesting to see if Fox as screwed up the colour balance.

Now this cell here I had to cut and slice the large image together that I (copied saved).

You can see the usage this print cell has had with minor scratches.

http://thefilmcellstore.com/Drama_c6.htm

http://thefilmcellstore.com/NEW-20-OFF-Avatar-Film-Cell-Collectible-imgAA233.htm

The cyan colour like green on the outer sides of the print is the SDDS6 soundtrack
The wavy wiggly lines is the Dolby stereo SR analogue soundtrack
The dotted lines that looks like Morse Code is the dts control track for the CD-ROM
The darker side on the left between each sprocket hole is the Dolby digital soundtrack

I can often sense the HF above 8KHz which is fairly common and relatively easy to pick out.

Now since I’m limited to how far I, see the HF on the Technics SH-8055
25Hz 63Hz 100Hz 160Hz 250Hz 500Hz (1KHz 2KHz 4KHz 8KHz 16KHz)

Anyway I’ve patched the centre out the spectrumlab, changed the settings for higher frequency resolution.

Okay now, this might be an old film but at the time, it was rather state of the art in Dolby stereo SR.

The cat-scan scene in Alien3 (1992) chapter 19 region 2 DVD shows sharp edge high end that pinches on the ear.

I’m presently readdressing the HF for smoother flatter response and bit of extra boasting on the amps (not too much only what I need for the room). A little of the usual audio limiting will be applied for HF protection.

The blinding bright yellow with patches of orange on part 1 lower part is where the record graph starts from and ends at the top. (12 KHz 18 KHz)

Part2 between (17 KHz and 18 KHz)

The Truman Show (1998) has a laughable moment as Truman drives though the town, while having radio reception difficulties. The higher pitch frequency (I’ve outlined in red).

I recall this bending my ear in the cinema in Dolby SR-D played over the JBL 4675-A.

The tone extends quite far up the HF register. Maybe I need to reset the Spectrumlap to higher scale above 20 KHz.

Brought Westworld for as little as £4.99 from play.com last week, and received it two days ago. So far its had at least 5 viewings and counting.

I’ve seen it once before on Turner Network Television on cable many years ago.

“Boy, do we have the vacation for you…”

It’s basically a futuristic theme park where guests play out there fantasies in Roman-world medieval-world and West-world against computerized programmed robots to act and bleed like, real humans.

It kinder pre-causes “The Terminator” (1984) of later years.

Yul Brynner is gunslinger who goes a bit haywire along with the rest of the theme parks robots that start killing the guests systematically.

Also starting Richard Benjamin (Catch-22) and James Brolin (Capricorn One) in Michael Crichton first written/directional film nightmarish world and fight for survival against man and machine…

Framed at 2.35:1 scope letterbox, no 16:9 enhancement but that doesn’t spoil the viewing. The image is as crisp for any standard DVD colours are fine as to is brightness and contrast level.

Sound is stereo 2.0 that plays fine in Dolby stereo Pro-Logic with moderate open front sound stage. Dialogue mix is recorded well for its time, by sound mixer (Richard S. Church). The sound effects have fair bit of openness over the LCR and the music by (Fred Karlin) sounds menacing when gunslinger roams around looking for his target in the lower levels of “Delos”

Extras are bit thin with just one theatrical trailer.

I’ve just given the DVD a quick listen on side (A and B as this is flipper DVD) I’m into films of this era that use, crazy wild wide dialogue panning over the fronts LCR and the (inner-left inner-right).

The surrounds are original single monaural or duel mono surround played over the arrays sounds brilliant for vintage mixes, of the late composer Maurice Jerra.

There is one thing I’m worried about Bluray and that is possible (fake stereo surrounds) as this seems to be an issue with studios/Bluray taking liberty. Reviewers don’t really give solid facts on the audio side nor does the studios that produces the titles as 5.1 is rather misleading.

The mix here might as well be 4.1 since the surrounds are playing the same sound twice and what is the point of the LFE.1 since its hardly every used its just a waste of two channels. The film would have benefited well with the two other discrete channels 2 and 4 left-centre right-centre, while perceiving the original presentation as seen in 70mm.

Between the two screen captures DVD/Bluray there’s a noticeable framing issue with the DVD where the framing is pulled back slightly on the Bluray that shows more frame width.

Also possible colour manipulation, which one is true colour? Guess you need frame from the film itself. sigh I rather like the colour on the bluray the tone looks skin tone natural. The tone on the DVD looks like everyone had bad Indian curry. Why can’t studios leave the colour controls alone? Mucking around with the colour phase makes for a bad colour!:banghead:

If it was filmed in (1.78:1) that is it! Its only been manipulated to simulate (scope 2.35:1) in fake untrue unreal unnatural, just like the mad directors other love for Super35 was in earlier days, just so that, he can later bullshit all-of-us with framing (this way, or that way)…sigh, wow what a poor excuse for filmmaker!

Use guanine anamorphic lenses!!!! Oh, but I get it the director is too bone idle lazy to have keep switches lenses. No wonder his films have wooden dialogue, the guys always in a rush and impatient.

Fuck knows what aspect ratio I’d be getting on region B I hope it’s the 1.78:1 W/S and not that disgusting fake scope cropping off the top and bottom portions of the image.

This was also an argument in days when few films would turn up on VHS in letterbox for rental along with customer complaints.

“I have these black bars top and bottom of the screen”...“I’m loosing picture information I want full screen!”

The image was presented as it is on the film print as it was projected in the cinema, with no loss or degradation of image.

The only real issue is the Super35 and now digital manipulation to create fake like scope films, to con audiences. Shame on all, you filmmakers that use this process!

I have feeling I’m going to really dislike this over hyped film now on bluray the unfavourable format in my books. (I really, couldn’t care less for 3D, Fox and Cameron can keep there 3D one focal directional image and cram it where the sun doesn’t shine in 3D!)

I noticed THX has had some involvement with it. Hmm wonder if they use the Amazing Life THX intro or new THX trailer, cautionary measures will be taken while playing this as it’s a new film and I have no idea what the dynamic range is going to be like on effects or music.

Well I enjoyed it. The film mix released in (dtsHDMA) was rather neat, with plenty of dialogue panning, while narrated from centre channel, Jake Sully paraplegic marine played by (Sam Worthington). The story is predictable but enjoyable and the two-dimension needs no 3D here the sound was mostly 3D.

At chapter 1, time, 00:05:04 to 00:05:09 dialogue pans from centre across to left front and along the sidewall surround arrays as marine yells out to marines…

[Centre front] Go, go, go, go! [Left front] “Get out of there!” “Keep moving!” [Surround left] “Let’s go, let’s go!” Go directly inside!

The low end seems to be mostly covered by the LCRS.

LFE.1 was sparingly used but effective when it comes in.

Image W/S 1.78:1 was plenty shape for the CRT widescreen TV why bother with a HD TV, I only use the LCD video once in short while and didn’t even bother using it today.
