Colorized Dolby stereo version as skewed dialogue panning with voices being shifted over the LCR makes for an exciting difference over monaural. the colour looks a bit queer in places but different.

Frequency graph of the (sw-re-mix) sub bass direct reading shows noise on the soundtrack that can’t be ignored. When “The Thing” attacks with slight scare its not so noticeable until the level drops below a certain threshold where the noise comes back in. Slight hiss maybe Dolby A/SR would make it sound better.

Crimson Tide is under the scope of scrutiny and the one in my possession that wins hands down is the dts 5.1 THX Laserdisc where it leaves the region 2 totally submersed at the bottom of the ocean. Okay, okay, it will still entertain the average Joe on the street unless they’ve heard the first edition mix over and over on dts THX laserdisc.

The scene that I tested conflict between the captain and Mr. Hunter, the new executive officer, who goes over the captain’s head because he feels that the (EAM) Emergence Action Message that was cut off during attack on the USS Alabama and the Russian submarine first of all needs verification before unlashing nuclear Armageddon on the USSR.

The home cinema is under tests at the present moment so my excuse for tonight’s session is placing the SPL db meter 2 feet away from the centre channel which is a JBL control 5 set to active crossover mode with Behringer DCX2496 for LF and HF. The pink noise was a dts 5.1 calibration and set-up disc and with fader setting on the AVR set to -4db the pink noise was playing back at soft level of (57db 60dba)

The level of the film mixes are loud and like I, said I’m doing some tests.

Chapter 10 where Charles and Eric go to Jean’s home in an attempt to control the deadly power that she now possess all goes terribly wrong. Awesome sound moment that pushes the limits of home entertainment plenty of bass in the LCRS while LFE.1 “boom channel” goes deeper and deeper as well as higher in range. This shows that Jeans power is bigger than Charles and Eric’s combined.

Its sounds like a HUGE amount of air turbulence rushing around as objects are suspended at the will of Jean’s mind.

43 minutes 53 seconds onwards to 47 minutes 47 seconds

As everything starts to calm down while slowly coming to stand still with objects freely suspended at 47 minutes 08 seconds with mild shuddering low then KABOOM Charles is gone with the house finally slamming down back onto the ground!

Climatic final from X-Men 2 as the X-Plane is powerless to move and with tons of water heading its way from the dam! Jean scarifies herself for her comrades so that they may live. It’s a bit of downer as she is pulverized by the tons of water pressure that finally kills her.

I have heard another (whale) sound on X-Men 2 while listening to the surrounds because I’m mellow at the present time, this time its from Star Trek IV the Voyage Home you know the one with the whales!

Star Trek IV The Voyage Home chapter 6, 34 minutes 13 seconds the dream sequence where the crew blacks-out due to the slingshot around the sun. Left and right fronts there is different pitch on the centre channel and delay of few seconds on the split-surrounds it’s the left and right fronts that you have to pay attention to. It seems like slight bit of EQ has softened the tone on X-Men 2.

Titanic (1997) has strange squeaky sound effect that sounds like something moving back and forth like door-hinge? It starts at chapter 4, 15 minutes 46 seconds bare in mind these are region 2 DVD so they’ll be time difference. The sound effects lasts for several seconds until it stops.

In the cinema this got my attention as I was looking to the left and right of me. I thought a seat was lose or something? LOL

It’s slightly soft on right front while being more (clearer on the centre and left front).15 minutes 55 seconds it stops!

Around the same year Species 2 (1997) chapter 5, 13 minutes 45 seconds has the same squeaky sound effect mostly on the split-surrounds and partly on right front.

I didn’t see this in the cinema unlike the first one that I did. I noticed the sound within flash upon first watching the film on DVD back around (2001).

Brought the forth in the Indiana Jones instalment a it long after due and its had mixed views with the fans its taken me nearly day to get used it having grown up on the Indiana Jones films during the 1980’s.

£7.98 "now that's ASDA price".;)

Dashing archaeologist Indiana Jones is on quest for the “crystal skull” that holds the key to ultimate power to anyone that returns it to the mythical lost city in the Amazon. Times, have changed its now (1957) the dawn of the nuclear age and the cold-war, between the USA and USSR after Indy and his friend are kidnapped by Russians that take them to secret base in Nevada otherwise know as “Area-51” a top secret facility where a heavy magnetised box that holds a mummified species of unknown origin?

Indy battles the odds with (Shia LaBeouf) at his side race across north American down to south American to rescue and old friend (Karen Allen) Marion Ravenwood and (John Hurt) Professor Harold 'Ox' Oxley.

Indy escapes from one of the most preposterous cliff-hangers a nuclear bomb explosion on a test site, inside a refrigerator LOL impossible near to impossible but damn funny.

I’d say it’s the movie of the month its got plenty of action thou it does tend to get slow but that’s the point, listening to Indiana Jones discussing about the myth’s of the legend and following the plot, even if the ending does seem to be silly, in a way it makes sense for the cover-up of (July 7th 1947) the Roswell incident in New Mexico. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roswell_UFO_incident

I’ll start off with “Amazing Life” (THX introduction trailer) that I first heard at the Empire Leicester Square in THX on Friday August 1st The X-Files I want to Believe and it was quite stunning sat front and centre it dwarfed around with sonic pure deep pulse that reached quite high on the SPL db metre.

I was quite surprised to see it on the start of Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull it just shock the room door not quite off its hinges just vibrating, LOL looks like I’ve got some diy to sort out.

The surrounds with centre back active enveloped all-around with wonderful harmony.

LFE.1, shuddered the sofa, I was tempted to increasing the level but I didn’t want to overcook it, too many chefs spoil the broth.

More to come…I’m using chapters 1 and 2 to motivate me because of the calm, sound I’m starting to really like this now. LOL

Thinking about it £7.98p is cheaper than going to the cinema I mean the amount of times, I get to listen over and over to favourite part would mean you’d have to pay again to see it.

I’ll just call it the (rocket car sled) looks like trilling ride, chapter 3, 16 minutes 07 seconds, sounds cool as it passes by a herd of chipmunks, along the fronts LCR while thundering over the valley on the surrounds and then passing around on the surrounds.

The LFE.1 propels the rocket sled ride until finally coming to full stop thank god!:D

Hear is a very familiar sound effect!

Star Wars Episode IV: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) chapter 16, 31 minutes 23 seconds Luke Skywalker uses his lightsaber to cut a hole into the imperial AT-AT walker that is heard on screen left and partly on centre channel. I like this moment from the film classic on how they executed the shot very damn clever. The John Williams score belts it out with horns and strings with perfection.

Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) chapter, 1 7 minutes 2 seconds Col. Dr. Irina Spalko instructs one her Russian goons to use explosive to override the hanger door mechanism that is heard on screen right and partly on centre channel, if your using DCX2496 ware a little delay on the centre channel helps for half paned sounds.

I guess this sound effect is second to the (Wilhelm scream) because if you listen very hard you’ll hear the sound effect in Forest Gump during the ambush just after the rain stops! mortars are dropping everywhere with Forest running out of the ht zone you’ll hear the Skywalker lightsaber cutting effect not sure of the name of this sound effect but (Skywalker lightsaber cutting effect) will do fine.

Here’s a (Wilhelm scream) effect that comes in school library during the motorbike and car chase chapter 5, 34 minutes 51 seconds.

For Indy and the others to get down in to chamber below they must release sand that will open gateway into the next level that drops down quite a bit, with steps that are slowly retracting into the walls and pit of rocky spikes at the bottom.

Mulder and Scully are reunited back together for another X-files outing. It starts off in the snow with visionary who clams to see victim’s faces from the past, Father Joseph Crissman (Billy Connelly) who helps the FBI to find one of their own agents Monica Bannan that was abducted. The trail leads to frozen body in the snow “its here, its here”.

The image holds up fairly well though the digital presentation at the Empire Leicester Square, on (Friday 1st August 2008) is still imbedded into my memory the whites still look stunning on the opening sequence as the FBI pick though the snow and ice. Its here its here line comes though clearly on the JBL control 5 as it did in the Empire with its 56KW JBL THX sound system!

The opening is loud thou brief with fast edits cutting back to the previous night of the abduction. LFE.1 cuts in with rage along with the helicopter hovering over the surrounds and pounding me in the chest inon the sofa! Screaming and yelling.

Centre back surround works well with the split-surrounds as the helicopter pans over the fronts and along right sidewall arrays and onto the centre back. The snowplough attack on Mulder works well as the car rolls over the cliff and onto centre back.

I like what I see on the frequency graphs that’s more or less what I felt at the Empire only with 56KW JBL THX hehehe certainly rumbled my JBL system.

I’ve decided to look at the strength of the low end on the first X-Files movie. Very interesting looks like the new film, thou it doesn’t have guns or explosions going off in it, it does have car and track crashing and neat on foot chase that ended with nice low end.

This one does rumble with a more than few bumps and jolts in the Dolby mix. The explosion of building only covered LCRS no LFE.1 is recorded on the scene so don’t get to carried away with setting the sub bass too loud because once the unexpected LFE.1 come along they’ll damage your sub.

There is plenty of lows in the cave with primitive man with the alien attack, I kinder skipped that one and moved forwards to the present day in Texas as group of boys break though to cave where the skull is found and some strange sticky black oil that moves by itself and consumers its victims by digesting bone and tissue and transforming their bodies into jelly.

Helicopter flies in and around the buildings with strong breeze blowing that can be heard on the surrounds giving the sense of being high up amongst the skyscrapers. As it comes into landing it’s heard on the surrounds uniformly all-over it pans down onto the centre as it comes to steady stand still on the building.

Note: when this played at the Empire Leicester Square on Sunday October 8th 1989 in 13KW JBL THX sound system did it move the Empire or what! It was an almighty JOLT! Now then!

As Spock gets the Enterprise warp drive mains system back online, just at the last biting moment Kirk orders Sulu to Go! As Enterprise, gracefully jumps to warp speed leaving the crippled U.S.S. Reliant, behind.

Short warp speed shows a slight jolt!

This may look underwhelming but it felt with mild jolt in this home cinema and the Empire was HUGE in my face or a kick in the chest, as it leaped away from U.S.S. Excelsior only to crawl on impulse power then fold up as the engines conked out.

There’s a few other warp speed passes thou no LFE.1 track is recorded for the warp speed effects. There is LFE.1 recoded on the film it’s just used for the bigger impacts like Klingon bird of pray de-cloaking or Genesis earthquake rumble effects or the space dock doors opening.

These are direct from the AVR’s outputs that then pass-off to various other Dolby processors and from the low pass outputs for (left and right summed centre and left and right surrounds summed) LFE.1 is direct from AVR to FQB2496 in bypass mode as I’m not using the subs to monitor, just the basic LCRS which mind you is Just Bloody Loud JBL on this film!

I don’t think my cat wanted to stay in the room, it wonder out too JBL loud for it, bugger that car that flies overhead and then the fire truck BANG on the 6 surrounds uniformly-all-around!

I’ve taken the frequency waterfall independent graphs from chapter 23, 43 minutes 31 seconds to chapter 24, 46 minutes 45 seconds.

Funeral held for `Star Trek' actress Roddenberry

The Associated Press
Monday, January 5, 2009; 8:20 AM

LOS ANGELES -- Friends, family and fans gathered this weekend to bid a final farewell to "Star Trek" actress Majel Barrett Roddenberry.
More than 250 people attended the funeral Sunday in Los Angeles. Roddenberry was the widow of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, and had been involved in the "Star Trek" universe for more than four decades.

The 76-year-old Roddenberry died of leukemia Dec. 18 at her Bel-Air home.
Among the mourners were "Star Trek" stars Nichelle Nichols, George Takei and Walter Koenig.

Three people wore Star Fleet Academy formal tunics, and many others sported "Star Trek" rings, pins or medallions.

Roddenberry played the dark-haired Number One in the original pilot, but metamorphosed into the blond, miniskirted Nurse Christine Chapel in the original 1966-69 TV series.

Yes to honour the passing of Majel Barrett Roddenberry. She’s quite foxy as Nurse Chapel, :) with the usual tiny little JBL logo in the corner

I wonder why William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy didn’t attend.

Some are LOL recorded too loud I should have kept the levels down on the mixer too much pink is bad but the film does extend some low frequency content into the surrounds on most films with discrete 5.1 mixes.

I’ve monitored a few action highlight sequences highlights on the surrounds to clarify just how much low end is supported in the surrounds. I’ll start the thread off (Die Hard 4.0 2006) with more come on the way later on.

Dramatic moment from (Cliffhanger 1993) as Gabe and Jessie repeal down the cliff face to escape from a ticking bomb that’s been placed on the top of the mountain. There’s some good score playing that slow builds up the tension before Gabe almost losses Jessie in the gripping moment just seconds before the bomb explodes with a shower of rock debris falling all-around.

(Planet of the Apes 2001) Never send a monkey to man’s job. chapters 4 and 5 belts out some very loud and deep lows that respond very will on the sub bass while bass mid kick fully surrounds the viewing area. I’m thinking of adding another device to tame and yet this will allow me to add some extra level on the low end. Often there are softer moments that carry low rumbling effects but when it gets (too much for taking) you need something to automatically control it, I’ve done this before and it performed very well in indeed.

The split-surrounds just went nuts as Davison’s small shuttle craft travelled tough the storm and time, itself with effects moving appearing to move down the sides and from side to side of the sidewalls, the score works well by Danny Elfman, only wished it was played at higher level in the mix.

Background air ventilation system can be heard on the split-surrounds in the stellar cryptography room is interrupted without warning Enterprise takes a few phaser jolts from on her stern (centre back). Sparks flare outwards in the engineering section. As Praetor Shinzon continues to open fire on Enterprise with a few flybys swooping around moving from right side to centre back to left side gives some large openness to surrounds as well as depth.

Enterprise returns fire with phases fanning outwards form the saucer section half of the vessel. With impacts still pounding Enterprise, (you yourself) will be looking upwards towards the surrounds along with the crew.

The film is loaded with lots of low end in the surrounds to keep the addicted Trekkie glued to the screen.

Last Sunday was the cast and crew screening of ‘Sunshine’ at the Empire Leicester Square. The Empire is probably the best cinema in all of the UK- the screen is 18.26x 8.14m (approx 60×26 feet), it holds 1330 people and, with a 56000 Watt THX certified sound system, the sound is out of this world. It was the absolute *perfect* place to see ‘Sunshine’.

Anyway how about some (Sunshine 2007) just finished going though the film very fast looking for some good low, low moments and there’s plenty of them. While typing this up and doing the screen captures in the pc as I had to remove the DVD from the main DVD player for capturing and then placed the film back in the main DVD player, went to chapter 20 as I like the mellowness of the surrounds on the end credits.

Edited the screen captures and the graphs show some low below 30Hz that’s good enough.

Here is a few frequency waterfall graphs of Sunshine (2007) chapter 11 and chapters 16 to 17. The music by John Murphy is very emotional and moving within Capa space suit I could hear his heart beating in sheer desperation to free the other part of the module to complete their mission.

As McLoughlin talks back to one of the chiefs outside the (Tower Two) a thunderous almighty roar draws McLoughlin’s, attention upwards! We the audience know what is happening with this dramatization of the real event! For McLoughlin and his crew they have no idea what horror is happening on the outside? Franticly looking around at the confusion of pandemonium of screaming people that can be heard in the distance on the surrounds as the each level is slowly pilling up on each floor level! McLoughlin’s crew also looking around at the confession!

As level starts to lower slightly to focus on centre front important dialogue McLoughlin sees there’s no hope for running towards the lobby doors and understanding he and his crew are in grave danger! He focuses on the basement. Yelling out to his crew “Run! The elevator shaft!”

As the surrounds start to build back up in level thou mildly as most of the sound is carried on the LCR and LFE.1 track, the rushing sound of air is cursed by the floor levels pressing violently down and creating a burst of air that soon goes too utter silence around your ears, you too will gasp for air breathlessly thinking what these guys went though wasn’t pleasant at all.

With this film I use the centre back and have used a matrix rear in the past but I need more JBL control 1 for the (overheard surround).

The visual effects by John Dykstra’s Star Wars Star Trek the motion picture Firefox Apogee group was rather groundbreaking at the time of the realise of (Lifeforce 1985). I knew there was two version of the film before I brought the DVD as it was aired on TV late or early 1990’s and the sound sucked on the extended version.

Bass seemed heavier on the theatrical cut and bit lower as well, thou the only to tell is if I fire-up VHS PAL player and look for the Dolby stereo theatrical cut.

MGM/UA could have least placed two versions of the film in this single DVD. Version here is six-track Dolby stereo 70mm.

I’ll try a few more later on but in the meantime. It would be far less terrifying. But that’s not important now.

dts “A Touch of Surround Madness” track 5 with its assorted range of lows as well as a, variety of directional sounds that have a fair amount low end within each channel. It’s a perfect way to see what the sound system can do at best of reproducing soundtrack to the best of its abilities. Sure there will always be a few compromises with each and sound system, to what it can do and what it can’t do within its technical tolerance levels.

Video was curtsey of The Dude who pm me this wonderful link of historical footage.

Saturn V - S-1C Stage Testing (audio: natural S-1C sound)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3sVuFjJlp4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3sVuFjJlp4)

First 30 seconds of the video was plentiful of dynamic range, not sure if the extreme low end has been filtered off. It mildly vibrated the sofa at comfortable at just under 100dbc.

Sub bass excursion wasn’t present when look at the JBL 4645 from its side elevation.

Alesis RA300 was in the green thou it was lit up quite a bit but far away from clipping stage.

Volume was set at 0db on the Kenwood RKF-X9050D THX select

Behrnger DCX2496 reached -20db on input while out was kept at -40db.

Sound is in monaural form when passed though in Dolby stereo centre channel output while sub bass extension carried the rest of the rumble that was rolling at different intervals over my stomach,

This has to be one of many clear recordings of the engine testing at Redstone rocket facility of these mighty powerful rocket engines one the biggest ever built to this day.

Sound pressure level on the JBL control 5, was mild I wasn’t going to push this as there is no need for demonstrating it to the point of ear-pain, but if you want to turn up the level just remember its near to impossible to get the same level as the Real thing, god knows what the SPL db level was around that place back then, phenomenal I’d imagine.

Input level on the Behringer BFQ2496 was in at -30db with slight flicking at -24db.

The 70mm six-track Dolby stereo was nominated with an Academy Award® for best sound achievement and its not a bad contender as it packs a wallop!

The missile cylo sequence has good ample supply of low end support over LCRS while LFE.1 adds a little back-up support that would have you ducking for cover under the table!

The surrounds in some parts only carry sound effects while music and some of the other deeper portions of the effects remain up front. When it’s called upon for music to start playing dramatically in the surrounds it fades in.

The baby boom/track aka LFE.1 is used sparingly and affective. The door closing wasn’t as loud as I thought it to be. The bombs dropping

the reviewers said:

Weirdness overload!,
Lynch's most bizarre movie to date
An intense experience
An amazing movie experience
Possibly the strangest film ever made.
Very eerie, very disturbing, very nightmare-ish and very entertaining!
Stunning.
A profound, life-changing experience
absolute masterpiece,
possibly the best movie ever - and the weirdest,
The most bizarre film I have ever seen, but also one of the most fascinating
Stunning, absolutely stunning

I’ve only seen a few of his films that Eraser Head was mono and black & white all the way and there is no force on this planet that would make me watch that one again.

Blue Velvet was weird and scary but something about says no way not again.

Now I liked the way Dune and its hard to find a DVD that supports scope and six-track Dolby stereo because other copies have been bullshit with panned and scanned and Dolby stereo only. I like the soundtrack on that film.

Wild At Heart I liked the poster with Dolby stereo SR on it I rented the VHS PAL many, many years ago, yeah I like the sound on Nicholas Cage in SR.

I liked what I saw with the snippet from Lost Highway that sounds like it’s got good ADR and I dig that sort of stuff on the JBL.

That’s me, being honest and wired as it seems Lost Highway rocks because that scene was f6)king funny and scary as well because there is no telling what Lynch might what the performers to do. Blow the guys head-off and leave him on the side of the road and drive off as a load vultures swoop down and start eating him.

That’s David Lynch.:D

I haven’t looked for anymore because I like it to be surprise when I stumble across it. That mechanic I thought Robert Loggia was going to shoot him while driving around near the cliffs that put me on the edge and it was unnerving. Until Robert Loggia bodyguards strapped the seatbelts ON as that guy drove past with the finger!

I knew something bad was going to happen and that is damn funny.

that scene is NOT typical for this movie..kinda out of place, but funny..

Some Lynch films , I turn off in the first 5 minutes...but have watched Mullholland Dr. a couple of times to try to figure it out...the soundtrack CD is spooky and I've noticed he usually has a background rumble going on in the weird flixs.

Another of his that I really liked was " The Straight Story "
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/

a very sweet and endearing film. (from IMDB)

""The Straight Story" chronicles a trip made by 73-year-old Alvin Straight from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wis., in 1994 while riding a lawn mower. The man undertook his strange journey to mend his relationship with his ill, estranged, 75-year-old brother Lyle."

Laurens, Iowa, 1994. Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) is a 73-year-old frail old man who walks using sticks, and lives with his slow-witted daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek). One night, during a raging thunderstorm, Alvin gets a phone call from a hospital informing him that his 75-year-old estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) has suffered a stroke.

Determined to meet and patch things up with his brother before either one of the dies, Alvin decides to visit him. The trouble is that Lyle lives over 300 miles away in Mount Zion, Wisconsin, and Alvin is legally unable to drive a car due to his bad health and poor eyesight. To make matters worse, Rose cannot drive either and they have no money for a bus fair. Undaunted, Alvin hatches a plan: he will drive his Rhoda lawn mower all the way.

Sadly the Rhoda is not up to the task and splutters to a halt 10 miles away outside the town of West Bend (Home of the Grotto). Reunited with his daughter, Alvins stubbornness knows no bounds, so he approaches Tom the Dealer (Everett McGill) to fix him up with a new vehicle: a 1966 John Deere riding lawn mower with a top speed of five miles per hour from Tom's personal collection.

On September 15, Alvin sets off once more to Wisconsin. By day he travels on the road and at nights he camps out in the fields off the road making a campfire for himself every night. Alvins epic journey sees him meeting a pregnant, runaway hitchhiker (Anastasia Webb) whom he inspires to return to her family after a nightly campfire cookout.

A few days later, Alvin encounters and comes in last in a bicycle race a local town is having. Then, Alvin encounters a frantic woman (Barbara E. Robertson) who has hit a deer and she tells him that she appears to have an unwanted ability to make deer come out and act like lemmings in front of her moving car.

On October 8, as the landscape begins to undulate, Alvin's trusty mower goes out of control and he speeds down a steep hill and it turns out to have fan-belt and transmission failure. So, five weeks after leaving home, Alvin is forced to wait again for it to be repaired and staying with a kindly couple called the Riordans (James Cada, Sally Wingert).

Haggling with the Olsen twins Thorvald and Harold (John and Kevin P. Farley) so that he can afford the bill, Alvin sets off again. Staying in a church cemetery for one night Alvin confides his life and problems to a local priest (John Lordan) and his determination to complete the trip. Alvin then crosses the Mississippi River into Wisconsin, slowly approaching his brother's home.

After stopping in a bar in Mount Zion and drinking his first beer in years, Alvin makes the final stage of his journey down a dirt road to his brother's shack where he is finally reunited with Lyle at last.

David Lynch (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000186/) said he has only recently (2002) realized what subconsciously inspired the film: the O.J. Simpson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001740/) trial. He said that the trial was a major influence on his mind during the stage of writing this script, which deals with a man who killed his wife. Curiously enough, Lynch cast Robert Blake (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0086706/) to play the Mystery Man, who is a major character in the film - years later, Blake would be put on trial for killing his own wife.
Robert Loggia (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005162/) only appeared as Mr. Eddy because of his former desire to play Frank Booth in Blue Velvet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090756/) (1986). He showed up for an audition, unaware that Dennis Hopper (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/) had already been cast, and proceeded to wait for three hours, growing increasingly agitated. Upon seeing Lynch and learning of Hopper's casting, Loggia proceeded to give an extremely profane rant, which remained in Lynch's head for years as what would eventually become Mr. Eddy's road rage scene. Loggia, years later, received a phone call from Lynch requesting his performance for this movie.

According to the script for this film, the scene with Mr. Eddy and the tailgater takes place on Mulholland Drive. David Lynch (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000186/) would go on to direct a film of the same name (Mulholland Dr. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166924/) (2001)), which also has a motor accident take place in the same spot.

Ranked # 22 on Entertainment Weekly's "25 Top Scary Movies Of All Time."

watched "Tropic Thunder" today,,no synopsis or waterfalls ... but an American white guy playing an Aussie white guy playing an American black guy was worth the price. Hope Robert Downey Jr. gets recognized for it. Was a perfect movie to switch back to my powered AR towers for the HT.

While conducting a test with complex Dolby soundtrack, I switched over to the French language track, to have listen, when I noticed that Waingro’s footstep was missing at.

Chapter 29, 93 minutes 55 seconds.

I’ve backed up the DVD and noticed that the glasses sound isn’t on the English language track, 93 minutes 07 seconds, when Van Zant removes his glasses there is subtle sound centred on the French language track.

Also when Waingro, walks into Van Zant office, the footsteps appear different in texture.

I think Nicholas Cage is going for the Gene Hackman/Michael Caine award ... never met a script they wouldn't do ... He sure stays busy!
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000115/

But we did see a recent Nick Cage film we liked - "Next"
Hadn't heard any hype about it, apparently its based on a graphic novel, its about a guy who can see 2 minutes into the future - we originally works it like a cheap magician/clairvoyant, but it seems there's an FBI agent who thinks it might be real and not an act, and there is a terrorist faction thats smuggled a nuke into the US and maybe he can help find it ...

Lots of fun, and some great action sequences - works the woofers a bit too!
It does expect you can think to enjoy it, as the story wraps around itself a couple of times as it plays out ...

Oh, and its got Julianne Moore as the FBI agent - and Jessica Biel, too!

Interview with Michael Minkler
http://mixonline.com/recording/interviews/audio_mike_minkler/

Do you agree with what some say, that it changed film sound?
Absolutely. A hundred percent. It was a defining moment because of Dolby Stereo. At the same time, it was the birth of baby boom. The 6-track was devised by Steve Katz, who was the Dolby consultant on the show. When we were predubbing reel 1 spaceships, we couldn't get this big thunderous low end that we wanted on the pass-by. We were going to do what we called a “Todd spread” back then, which was to record a left, center and right, and a surround — then fill in channels 2 and 4, the left extra and right extra, with information from these adjacent channels. But Steve said, “What if we used 2 and 4 for boom only, the low-frequency information, and we'll use full-range speakers.” Well, we didn't have them; we had the Altec A4 speakers, and we put low-frequency material in there as much as we could to enhance the spaceships. And every time there was an explosion, there was a sweetener that was cut for those two channels. Years later, it switched again when Apocalypse came along, where the two channels were used for left and right surround, and 6 was used for the boom. That was the Walter Murch idea: Why waste two channels for boom? He also had the advantage of low-frequency speakers. Anyway, Star Wars was the first baby boom, and it worked.

Brought this a couple of weeks ago and thou slightly disappointed Warner Bros hasn’t included the exclusive 70mm six-track Dolby stereo as it does exist. I’m guesing it would be format 42 with twin baby boom or twin sub bass channels. It is colourful clear picture and the photo chemical visual effects by Apogee look dazzling.

My thoughts on WANTED were kinder like “The Matrix” with this bullet bending visual effects, twisting turning and winding around bends and corners. Oh magic brilliant all the way…got a view this again.

“What the F^(uk have you done lately?”

Sound mix was Dolby awesome six-track bullet riveting listen fun. Defiantly a good contending for best sound mix if it wins tomorrow at the Oscars.

Time 63 minutes 05 seconds to 63 minutes 12 seconds

This was quite an impressive moment thou it it’s only brief and funny when MARONI yells while falling backwards down into the road below him. Agghhhh!

The crunch is around 40Hz to 60Hz near the top of the graph.

Now I have that I have all, four Lethal Weapons including a few special not so editions more on that later its in the sound near towards the end of Lethal Weapon 2 it seemed like a strange BBFC censor on the rapid killing of one of the scum bag African drug dealers.

Can’t really remember much from this one, it did kinder suck especially on VHS too noisy in the picture and sound, so this would be treat in all fairness.

Haven’t seen this since 1990 on VHS and before then at the cinema in Dolby stereo should sound great on the JBL with lower lows and higher highs.

I liked the look of colour the photography and the scope anamorphic lenses to give it openness on the ocean.

- I hardly ever watch movies / but after studying all your detailed sonograms of low frequency response for various movies / I do get an idea of whether I need to own subwoofers that cut-off at 30 hz or 20 hz ( based on my own movie preferences ) .

>< Thanks !

btw ; what movie are you profiling in posts 430 through 436 .

Yeah I know the spelling is terrible, but I do try.:)

Oh, that one that would be, Pulse.

Would you, believe I’ve read somewhere that some owners test their subs bass speakers out with this film, to see if can handle the lows.:wtf:

A frequency sweep would suffice. :)

Oh, I like this trailer it’s got an operatic feeling to it. It’s cut nicely with the images and sound, is warp factor 10.

It rumbled all over my body, feeling was good sensation in the chest with JBL vibrated the sofa a good one.

Waterfall taken directly from the sub bass output in sw-re-mix mode as this was only playing in Dolby stereo.

I can’t wait to hear it in six-track Dolby stereo digital at the Empire Leicester Square, front and centre row. I want the image to fill in my field of view and get bass and sub bass deeply rolling over me, with kick slam and deep depth, as well as crystal clear transparent highs, over the largest THX screen in the UK!

I think it’s starting to cut well now with new trailer and its still only teasing us fans. I didn’t expect this would happen and only 60 days and counting.

This one plays flipping loud and low enough to forget about Kentucky Fried Panda. I strongly prescribe a frequency sweep over KFP, simple but effective.

The CD disc was supplied with the dts millennium 2.4.6 decoder it also has assorted use of music that is brilliantly punchy in dynamics and spectral clarity that sparkles with remarkable transparency.

Track 16 has steady slow frequency that runs from 20Hz to 160Hz I’ve purposely kept the graph at 0 to 120Hz.

Chapter 31
Time 100 minutes 32 seconds to 101 minutes 51 seconds

McClaine kicks a pressure valve that sends cold air in Rand’s face. Loosing grip Rand falls into the what ever the hell that was WHOA! McClaine chuckles “Oh, no” as Rand is diced up into 52 pieces!

That grinding effect had a brutal grunt on the centre channel low end, LFE.1 had deep low end kinder ambiance feel of the motor noise that was filling the freezer like room. Gunshots had few pulse kicks, same with centre on a few scenes.

My obsession with the Star Trek originals started around Sunday October 8th 1989 11am in the morning! Now then, I have rock steady memory when it comes to decent sound playback at the EMPIRE, 20 years is long time, now then.

I’d like to start with Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan as this was chest pounding over Star Trek the Motion Picture which only played in 35mm Dolby stereo, still mighty impressive by the original 13KW JBL THX sound system!

Star Trek II was 70mm Dolby stereo, never had I felt a better presentation over the many other different cinemas over the years, this topped them all and beyond.

Since someone else was concerned about KFP Kentucky Fried Panda chapter 21, Skadoosh I’ve gone though each frequency sine wave to plot where I can feel the pressure of frequency to see what trade offs I have to deal with.

The Wrath of Khan, Khann, Khann, Khann, where “Joachim pushes the tactical or what ever that prop was into the wall with nice kick at the EMPIRE Leicester Square and that appears to be subtle sound effect”.

In the home its somewhat different its there just not played higher enough or other frequencies are forcing me to turn it down. So I’ll start with fresh page and go over (what can be felt and what can’t be felt) iron out the frequency so to speak.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/StarTrekIItheWrathofKhantheystillha.jpg

I’ve plotted the action sequence somewhere within 140Hz to 180Hz now since the this is centre channel only, there is no need for sub bass as this would have been reproduced by the original JBL 4675-A THX stage channels.

I didn’t see this going anywhere on the sub bass extension that I use for LCRS JBL control 5 control 1 surrounds, but I’ll sure try the impossible to nail this one down!

Okay let’s have some plain ole good fun, each room is different each and everyone has different speakers some have mismatched LCR others don’t.

Ashley,

I'm just curious, and mean no disrespect by this question, but do you ever just watch movies without analyzing the sound continuously while viewing? Do you enjoy the experience more by monitoring the technicalities throughout the process?

Also, do you frequently use your system for music only? If so, do you revert to pure stereo or the entire multi-channel system? How is the sound?

P.S., your commentary on your YouTube videos is priceless! "Who needs f#$%&ing Kung Fu Panda???" lol

P.P.S., I'm not a "cat person" but Sooty is adorable :)

Best,
- Mike

I didn’t have this technology around the time I was obsessed with JBL at the EMPIRE, so it seems logical now to analyzer what I might be missing on the soundtrack.

I can do music I could do Madonna “Live to Tell” without the Bose factor getting in the way. This is JBL here LOL, LOL.

I would swap Kung Fu Panda today for Leviathan (1989) I mean seriously AVS forums was making a huge big deal out film. Chapter 21 wow is that it, 1 second whoosh of random frequency sweep on all bands with few EQ peaks! :snore:

What’s next Valkyrie, well I’ve done waterfall on the trailer and that was wicked enough on the LFE.1 track! Maybe I’ll do The Day the Earth Stood Still, next month or month after not really itching to buy this on the first week; I want to get that video projector so I’ll put DVD titles to one side for a few months.

Yes my cat is sweet and bugger sometimes, can’t train them to stop biting. Natural instinct be buggered, I doubt he know what real mouse is, they basically attack anything that moves. He goes for my toes sticking out the end of the bed and its unpleasant, jabbing his claws into my toes and nibbling on them.

Yes Sooty is into feet!:D

Anyway going to do some more, experimentations I see colours clearly with spectrumlab yes I know it looks like Predator-heat-vision LOL.

I’ll do Madonna :smsex:sometime later in the day, too bad I can’t get stereo on youtube, might be the audio input/sound-card? I’ll just buy cheap new one at later time,; monaural isn’t too bad thou stereo would be bonus.

But do you have something like a water pistol for education against unwanted behavior? Cats do not like to be "water shot"! And they do remember this.

Well, if you're going to *do* Madonna (and thankfully on JBL's and not Bose ;)) I'll make a few recommendations:

The track "You'll See" is a very nice showing by her, and has an exceptional bass characteristic that should provide some fun for your analysis. Some of the more recent dance mixes are also pretty cool: "Give it 2 Me (Ljorich Club Mix)" comes to mind as having a great, driving bass line. The older stuff by her unfortunately didn't capture the dynamic range of the newer stuff.

Also, check out this link - it might help nip Sooty's "fetish" in the bud :p:

I may be turning senile, but I remember "Live To Tell" being the entire incidental music (not the entire soundtrack) of the brilliant film At Close Range. It started with one or two notes and was progressively enlarged as the film moved along. The melody was completed at the end and I think she sang the song over the credits? It is the one song of Madonna's that I like a lot, and credit goes to her as she co-wrote it, too. She sang it with subtlety and taste, two words I do not usually think of when Madonna comes up.

Ashley, I have lots of cats (three are black). Believe me, it is worth it getting abused by their love, and that is exactly what it is. Sooty is a keeper. Nice if you can break him of it, though. I had one cat who would wake me up in the morning by sinking a claw into my lip. He did it until the day he died, but at least not on most days. I would have taken a toe nibble over that, believe me!

If nothing else works, you could put Bitter Apple on your toes at night. Cats hate the taste, so at least he won't bite them.

Clark,

Have you ever checked out her version of "I Want You" featuring Massive Attack? I'm not a huge Madonna fan, but I would say that it aligns with the [rare] subtlety and taste you describe as being captured on "Live to Tell." Of all her material across many decades that song is likely my favorite, and one of the "gems" I reference when people summarily dismiss her (which I've been known to do myself...)

Best,
- Mike

Just having a little, play with :smsex:Madonna, :smsex:but not in the way your thinking. Due to where the ECM8000 is placed I noticed a minor null dip in the frequency response not a big deal to sort.

I’m going to do Madonna again it looked like the focus on the webcam was off a bit I’ll refocus and I was about to do pink noise “the wall” LOL I prefer doing Madonna on JBL. :smsex:

Hint: If you want the video to stay up on YouTube for any length of time don't include the artist's name or track title in the video title or description. I'm fairly certain most major record labels do key words searches of sites like YouTube to stop any actual or presumed infringement (though I personlly don't think playing a song for which you own the record in your own home and taping it should be considered such...)

Enterprise laving the dry-dock accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith score has a surprisingly good low end support played over sw-re-mix on the Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select and via the JBL 4645.

It was as if I was getting flashbacks from Sunday, October 8th 1989 when it played in THX at the EMPIRE Leicester Square, screen 1 London, on the Star Trek marathon day.

Sub bass extension was tightly controlled in the lows, 50Hz region vibrated the sofa parts of the floor, boom has been virtually eliminated with FBQ2496.

Screen captures are from special NOT edition from original scenes and not the, yuck version of the edited version 2002 edition.
