If I want to continue with this hobby at longer sight I definitely had to get rid of that annoying woofer refoaming prob, and the dependency on external support. So as an entry into speaker DIY, I decided to go down that well marked road myself – had picked up several drivers with shot surrounds this year, big time to finally check what all the hassle is about.

Certainly no big deal for the veterans  but I had digged through some older threads and thought I'd practice with some not-so-expensive drivers before doing some more costly or irreplacable ones. After having exercised with (3) 116H-1's I found they came out ok and the task is doable within my skill level.

Ok I' haven't been in evidence for outstanding craftsmanship here ;) BUT – these were easy, and good warm-ups since I got some more difficult 10" drivers to do that I was preparing for. Time to hold your breath now, I did continue with some holy cows. Here's an outlook on the candidates

- a 2122H - NOS, NIB MINT etc, spent all his life in the original box on a shelf and was never mounted anywhere, so well worth the attempt to rescue the cone/spider assembly, and
- a 2121 with front and back side in excellent shape but oh well – cone kits NLA.....

Will this turn out well? :hmm: To be continued..

Next, let's have a look at the backsides, to emphasize the gravity of the situation. ;)

Uh-ooh... only one shot for each. Stay tuned!

Be cool, a few are left here in Germany. But they are PRICEY

Refoaming the old 10" baskets is not too difficult. You can test the speakers with holding the foam in place with the trim ring first.

What IS a challenge is to find the right surrounds. 99% are too stiff.

A bunch of kits arrived here the other day. I used one 10" kit for both, and took a LOT of pictures step by step for my own site's documentation – basically they show pretty much the same like in Infredible's and Bo's threads though, so I better won't go all that much into details here again.

Otherwise, I could stretch this thread till Christmas with the single tasks..... ;)

Of course I was not obliged to keep an eye on the clock like a pro, and since I'm almost a pedant when it comes to cosmetics I kept the use of glue sufficient but sparingly. Then it's pressing..

...while playing the testtone with the computer auto-reverse all the time, till the glue dried.

This is how they came out today. The gaskets are not yet glued in place again, need to find a spacer for the 2122H's little gap. The 2121's gasket has a tighter, perfect fit. I don't like flashlight pics, but extra made some because they are so merciless..

The cone diameters differed a mm or two. Did not feel the need to fill the void with glue between the half roll and the cone edge for the 2121, like I had seen that on several woofers before. The tricky bit in this case was to apply sufficient glue on exactly the inner 2/3 of the inner surround lip, but not too much so it would not ooze out into that visible part. A small brush was a better choice than the tip of the bottle. The edge is still sealed very well that way.

I'd like to thank Bo and Infredible for their documentations and can confirm – patience is the key. :) And yes, DIY can be very satisfying...it actually even outweighs the bonus to save some bucks.

That's hard to photograph, Mac. It's centered perfectly.. did I mention the gasket and the gap? ;)
