I thought I share some pics of a vertical 4435 system I currently build.

Please tell me what you think about it.

They look really nice!!! Really good layout on the crossovers. Seperate chambers on the 2234's? Did you oil those buns up for the photo??

Seperate chambers on the 2234's?
Rob:)

Yes of course. In the first pic you can see the diagonal separation wall.

Did you oil those buns up for the photo??

Rob:)

No, I had them repainted like that. Looks good I think.

18mH, 0,21 ohms.

I call that low DCR :coolness:

It's from Intertechnik (German company for high end crossover components)

I expect no changes to my horizontal DIY 4435. Aquaplas 2426H Drivers plus CC networks.

I have no stock 4435.

Today I finished the vertical 4435's.

While playing/breaking them in I realized that the right speaker sounded somewhat harsh compared to the left one.
It took me an hour to figure out what's wrong. Guess what?

I forgot to exchange the original D8R2425 Dia for the D8275ND Dia (Aquaplased D8R2425) in the right driver. So I heard one brandnew stock 2426H vs. one brandnew 2426H with brandnew D8R275ND.

Unbelievable what difference it makes.

Question Guido, I noticed the settings on the L-pads. Are those settings to compensate for the horn height compared to normal sitting position?

They are gorgeous - truly look Factory (if the factory had ever made such a thing).
You said the footprint is 650mm x 450mm.
But tell us - how tall are they?

Thanks for the pictures -- very nice speakers.

First Riessen built a pair of vertical 4350, see
http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=6684
then Guido built a pair of vertical of 4435.

I wonder which model is the next to be rotated 90° ...

Where did you get those little black plastic bottoms (with white point) mounting on the front crossover attenuator ? I need four parts like these to restore my 4435.

First of all, thank you for all the compliments.

1,300mm or 4.27 feet

Question Guido, I noticed the settings on the L-pads. Are those settings to compensate for the horn height compared to normal sitting position?

This is the position where I find the sound perfectly balanced. I usually like a slight rollof of the highs. The mids set to 0 dB with the 4435 crossover let my ears bleed. The 4435 crossover creates a step at app. 1.2 kHz which I find sound agressive. The 4430 crossover don't have this. I yet have to test a 4430 crossover with adapted Mid/High damping in my 4435.

They are original JBL LPad knobs. I'm currently working on replacements together with R.J. who did the foilcals as those knobs get rare.

I have no stock 4435.
If I might inquire, where and how did you get your 2426 drivers Aquaplased?
I am considering a similar project (4430) and am wondering if such a treatment would help my 2425 drivers, or if it is even possible.

thanks,
Russellc

Sure it will smooth the sound. If you don't have aquaplas use the D8R275ND Dia. It is basically a D8R2425 with aquaplas.

Usually I set all speakers by ear. Yes, I did a control measurement last night. Looks exactly like I described the sound from hearing.

Just curious, but what would be the difference with a vertical driver alignment.
I have never understood or agreed with JBL's prechant for off set drivers.

Not to take away from your gorgeous speaker project. I always thought that 4435's should be vertical not horizontal.

Hi. I am starting a similar project but I am missing some data. Can you help answer this, please?

1 each side of the cabinet is 5 cubic feet in NET volume, right? (The horn and it's bracing must take up extra volume. Is that compensated for to yield 5 cubic feet NET volume?)

2. How much volume does each woofer and the horn take up?

3. Is the horn in a separate cabinet or just braced? Some photos make it look like a separate enclosure.

Many thanks in advance.

Yup. Great project and superb workmanship. I wonder if it would have been beneficial to integrate the horn between the two woofers for an improved pin-point source...

I think in that speaker only one woofer works to the horn. The second is brought in at 100Hz or so ( big yellow inductor?)
