I'm new to JBL, but not to vintage hi-fi (I know JBL is not all vintage!). Today I found a pair of L86. The cabs need some tlc but besides that they look OK. And from what I understand they are keepers!

When I tried them out my son noticed that one of the woofers were rattling and we looked and saw that the rubber surrounding were torn or rotted.

Surfing the internet and this fine forum I found information about refoaming these speakers but got confused. In a very informative thread here at Lansing Heritage woofer were refoamed but with foam surrounds. And pictures on the web show L86 with foam (as far as I can tell) and not rubber surrounds.

My very first question in this forum is thus: do the L86s come with foam or with rubber surroundings? And is it wise to substitute one kind of surround with the other kind?
