View Full Version : JLB 250ti's need new home

While cleaning out a recently deceased relatives business office. My eyes
came across these speakers of distinction. His business partner said he can't remember ever hearing them on. I Didn't know what they were at first, but wrote down the make, model and S/N's. Did a quick internet check, and ......THESE NEED TO GO TO A GOOD HOME. Not the toy boy garage band, down the street.
A quick run down of condition...cabinets, excellent teak wood, with grill covers. all speakers working excellent..( WOW!, it made my Jamos, quiver ) Yes I checked the surrounds and they do need replacement, slightly dried out. But they are totally intact currently. Serial Numbers are close #01840 & 01588. When the wife returns in a couple days I can post some pictures if there is interest. I'm in S.E. Michigan, not interested in the manual labor of crating them up for shipping, you may have another plan. I'll go 100 miles, or 1/2 way, which ever is less toward potential new home. If any interest out there let me know? $550.00

I Pm'd you about five times in 30 minutes, but you must not be around. I am in Michigan,in Grand Blanc by Goodrich. I can move these myself. What is your price? I have NO intention of EVER selling them. I only collect and keep the best that I find in all wooden cabinets. As I mentioned fully in the PM'd messages to you. Thank you. I believe the other people may be ahead though since I only PM'd you, unless my timing was better by PM time. Thank you.

Mixxed feelings here! If real, this sure is nice to see a fellow offering them to one of us who MIGHT appreciate them.
Then again, if they end up in the hands of a flipster from here looking to cash in on anothers "Good Will" it will seriously deflate my respect.
I am more inclined to think this is a not so funny joke but not on me.

Yep but we know who the Flipsters are!
Thats not to say there is anything wrong with flipping stuff.
I just think it would be nice for stuff like this to find a real home at a very nice price rather then to end up as warehouse goods to bolster anothers bank account.
There are members here who would bend over backwards to help with getting them refoamed, recapped and cleaned up and many nice posts could be forthcomming but it kind of deflates the good will of many to spend the time and efforts only to see the finished product end up at the auction listed as the "Best Ever" and "Professionally Refurbished" with links to the threads and site.:p

lets see....they went for $1475
I usually figure eBay/Paypal overhead at about 13 percent, = $192.
then the unsold first auction=$20 ?
so $1475-212=$1263 and I recall him saying he paid $2200....so it cost $937 for about 4 months of ownership ?
kind of an expensive learning cycle.:(

Yeah, but even tho he hated it when we told him so, they weren't original, they were painted wood cabinets. For a collector, their value was going to be under market price.
The first guy that painted them should have been keel hauled. (Not Source, but the first painter of the wood)
But Storm? His ears heard promises the market didn't keep.

Thank you for those very kind observations. My speakers, however, have changed since you heard them last. One of my favorite parts of the 4341's, believe it or not, was the 2405 tweeters. I always wondered what my composite system would sound like with the 077 on top. Because my modified T030 dome midranges can be crossed at 7K comfortably I was able to ad a pair of slots, replacing the 044Ti's. Very interesting and desirable results. Definitely a very capable tweeter!
Please pardon the off-topic response.
I love the 250 platform and it is still my favorite bass box.
Oh and by the way, don't underestimate those beautiful 4341 monitors.
With the right crossover and ditching the 2121 midbass for something better, I believe you will need a pair of sunglasses and a seat belt to listen to them, HOT HOT HOT!!!:dancin:
They will probably walk all over my composite L250 things. no bs!
Sincerely NZ.

First of all, I want to extend a special thanks to JLCARR for allowing me the opportunity to enjoy another fine set of JBL masterful speakers! You were a pleasure to deal with and very accommodating!
I guess I just was in the right place at the right time last week! I'm in total love and awe with the unique look and sound of the 250TI's!!
I meandered thru four States to get them this weekend and drove more hours than I care to think about right now, but I was in the truck the majority of the 36 hours I was gone. Didn't get back home 'til late last night with them.
Already pulled the woofers this morning and brought them into the local authorized JBL shop to get a fresh refoam. The spiders were still good. They look like they've been reconed by a JBL kit at some point, possibly in '95.

I'm not sure what you're trying to insinuate here as far as warehouse goods or with the MIGHT enjoy comment? There's no question these will be personally enjoyed for an indefinite period of time! That's not to say some of my other speakers aren't going to be displaced and might be looking for other uses/owners. That's the whole point of upgrading and testing along the way.
The woofers are in getting refoamed right now. I don't feel comfortable in my ability to start soldering in different caps and such. Now, having Giskard make up some Charge Coupled Networks would be a totally different story! They're sitting in the middle of my kitchen right now, ready to be cleaned up with Murphy Oil Soap, then nourished with a couple coats of Howard's Orange Oil, then fed a meal of Howard's Feed-N-Wax.

Of course we razzed Storm because he made such a fuss over everything he bought, then wouldn't listen to anyone that tried to help (like with his humm problem). You were not that stubborn so we wouldn't have razzed you - but - the best price was probably offsite for "collector's pieces" like that ... I do so love the look and the wood of the 250s!

It is Sept , time for you to come visit mine...and help them sound even better with many wonderful suggestions...
It seems that the 250 is a well liked speaker but not good for investrment at this time. I bought a set of 120s for 600 and 2 weeks later they go for 200-400 after Tower sold their inventory. the market has a lot of 104s and 044s speakers than it used to, lowered the value of 250's???
BTW,compare the 120s to anything for 200-400 made now and listen to the diferrence. They are pretty damn good for that kind of money

I wanted a pair also (tho have never heard any) so took measurements to my listening room and concluded they just went going to look right/fit. And my current speakers (which I dearly love) are only 44 inches tall and blend in perfectly ( one demoee called them "manly" and I now agree ) :bouncy: , so for now have given up on L300/250's.

first KJ didnt get his reserve (1750 ??)
then the black sprayed ones could only muster $1250
last week the LA pair went for $1025
and now these for $550 ??
I'm not going to comment much on KJ's since there's a conflict of interest, but suffice it to say, the eBay pics had a pronounced weight towards highlighting the slight cosmetic issues rather than positive traits. This, along with pickup-only usually means far few interested parties willing to take a chance.
The black ones' pictures initially were totally subpar with basically showing corners of the speakers or a pic from quite a distance. The whole ad language was slanted towards how deficient the cosmetics had been and they went thru several painting booths along the way. I suggested to him to at least take pics of the drivers and all angles of the cabinets. He then added those during the auction, and they actually garnered a little more steam in the bidding process.
Also, those two auctions were initially running CONCURRENTLY which usually works against each other.........
The LA pair, I believe, were just L250, not 250TI. Big difference! Also, they were pickup ONLY also, again.
My recent pair's story has an obvious explanation.........
brudha
09-12-2007, 07:15 PM
It seems that the 250 is a well liked speaker but not good for investment at this time.
Mark
What is this based on?
Is it best to buy stocks during market lulls or during market highs?
One must also use proper comparisons to properly draw conclusions or determine a possible change in trends. The examples previously described, I believe, are not representative enough to conclusively answer that question. Also, certain buying decisions (and the people willing to extend their dollars) are sometimes more seasonal in nature relating to prices and their fluctuations.........

It applies to me :( and ever since owning never seeing the price come up to what I paid, what other members were saying about not letting go of theirs for under 3G's at the time. That is not something I don't worry about though as I bought them to listen to not resale :)
I have replaced all the drivers w/new except the tweeters but they were rebuilt and coated, purchased charge coupled XO. I have over 4 g's invested but don't think I would get 2500 maybe not even 2000 of it back right now
I totally agree buy when down but you just don't know what happens next.
Part of my analogy was the 120 dropping in price and 2 of the 4 drivers of the 250ti have suddenly become plentiful after Tower's demise.
I am torn on this anyway as I might buy a 2nd pair if cheap enough and here in the east or central area.
I am not sure did you buy a pair? :applaud:

He apparently changed his eBay ID recently.
Searching members under "Ocupatto" returns "Futuristic...."
I found that out while tracing the shill.

Does he mean some of the drivers or the cabinets? I thought all 250 cabinets had following numbers, at least mine are (6369 & 6370).

I like the wooden ones on the floor...anyone know what they are? I love them.
Oh Yeah...Herman Miller chairs and Ottomans and furniture galleries are all over here AND they have a display of his works at the art museum in Detroit for quite some time. The old really weathered and broken in ones are the best,SO many colours too. The dusky olive is nice, but I'm a black lover for leather. I HATE the fake crappy ones....ugh-ola! I told some furnture fool at some store his were not even CLOSE to the real ones, I was having a snotty moment and he knew NOTHING of the Hermann Miller Eames.....he HONESTLY thought what they had were "cutting edge". What is with that????

I always wondered what my composite system would sound like with the 077 on top. Because my modified T030 dome midranges can be crossed at 7K comfortably I was able to ad a pair of slots, replacing the 044Ti's. Very interesting and desirable results. Definitely a very capable tweeter!

Okay, I was full of you know what about the moddid T030's being capable of 7K!
Let me strike that from the record. Although they do play up there they dive in response after 4800 or so, then they make a miraculous and enthusiastic comeback.
I still think the 077 is fantastic, however it must be teamed up with a capable HF driver.
Still learning, will try to keep my enthusiasm empirical!
