Are the GTI series really just subwoofers for cars? For your purusal I did analyzer pics of a W10GTI in a 1.4 cu ft cabinet vs the 2235 in the L200 cabinet with one port blocked off.

The W10GTI cabinet was set on top of the L200. The microphone was set 6 feet back from the speaker 32" off the floor. Neither the microphone nor the analyzer are of the highest quality. This first pic shows the setup.

The mid and highs are the LE175/HL-91 and 075 in the L200 cabinets. Crossover was the hand made "keeper" with ~800 Hz and ~7,250 Hz cut-offs. These were used with both woofers and the crossovers were adjusted for the smoothest response for each case. No eq of any kind was used.

First, the 2235 combo as smooth as I could adjust it. Note the dip between 500/1,000 Hz. I perceive this as a muffling of the human voice and it bugs the heck out of me! :blink: Also note the lack of a 32 Hz band.

Now the W10GTI with the cabinet completely sealed. Note how much smoother it is in the 500/1,000 Hz range, but does give up some bass (as well as a whole bunch of efficiency).

But, if I remove the tweeter and just leaver the 2" hole in the cabinet, this is the result I get.

Can't get much smoother than that.

Do you think that is the typical response??? JBL built and sold 4430's for 20 years with a 1K crossover. I doubt a 4430 has a dip like that at 500Hz. What happens with no crossover and just the driver running full range??

I wouldn't doubt the dip. There are many on this forum far more knowledgable than me who will tell you the the 2235 is rough with a dip between 500 -1,000 Hz.

When I was first putting the 2235/175/075s together it was Widget (I believe) who asked me what I intended to do about the hole in this region?

Well it's seems odd to me. Not like you wouldn't hear it in a 4430. Just have to see for myself.

Hi Todd,

Where the mic, speaker, wall, etc... are located will have a profound effect.
I don't see the particular effect noted, either in the nearfield or further away
when measuring 2235 (or 2234) in a 4430 cabinet. Some lumpiness above
~700Hz did appear with both drivers, so I suspect I'm seeing some
environment (large-ish living room, out from the wall, on the floor) and perhaps
cabinet effects.

If schedules can work out, I'd be happy to drop by with some measurement tools.

Yes please do. I work out of the house so am here most of the time.
