Any chance you'll get those crystal slots to look like crystal again? Or are those not the same as the 077's?

They are the pro version of the 077s and are not clear but black.

Being the utility cab , the paint had to come off. The corners were completely battered. At some time in their past the cabs had been sitting in water causing the mitres to open up. I had thought about building new boxes but ,decided to try and keep the cost down in both ££££ and time.
I used a heat gun and scraper to paint removal and 2 part car filler mixed with a little fibreglass resin to give it a little more viscosity. The commercial 2 part would filler I find too soft. Car Body fiiler holds a nice sharp edge.

I removed the baffle lip with a router and filled the edge with West System Epoxy. This glue is designed for boat building .... It does'nt shrink like that crap 2 part would filler.

Primed and undercoated . wet and dry (320 grit) between coats applied with a small gloss roller.

I have never used sheet glue before. It's the same adhesive that is used on edging tape.

cut the veneer 6mm over-size on all 4 sides.
I used a my plane to prepare the sheet for joining. Another way is to clamp the veneer between two pieces of VERY STRAIGHT timber or metal and sand it back to the straight-edge. You might want to get and extra bit of veneer and practice the process if you have'nt done this before.

Tape the sheets together making sure the join it tight and lined up as you would like it .

lay the sheet glue down between the box and the veneer and and iron it on .

Very nice job Rich, you make it look so easy. BTW, great idea about the car filler, that stuff is very tough, I'll keep that in mind! Cant wait to see the cabs with a finish on them, they are going to look great! ;)

Very nice! This is getting me inspired to do up my UREI 813s with veneer. Certainly would give them less of that Darth Vader look they have.

I do appreciate the discussions on alternative ways to deal with placing the veneer.

Cheers,

David

My complements to you on an outstanding job and I'm sure they will look and sound beautiful when completed. I hope this will be an insperation to others that have cabinets that could be saved. I understand it's neither easy or cheap to do but imagine what it would cost today for speaker cabinets of this quality.

Removing the front baffle lip also took away the rebate . By rebating the new walnut back into the baffle I have restored the strength ( greater glueing surface) I suppose I could have used biscuits, but I'm too bloody lazy.

I will route the profile, but first I want to trim the back edge in solid walnut to protect the veneer edge.

DONT FORGET TO CHECK FOR NAILS BEFORE YOU SPEND £ 20 ON A BRAND NEW ROUTER BIT :banghead:

the first coat of you know what !

I decided to keep this edge profile , but reduced it to 6mm.

Danish oil was used to finish the walnut. I cut back between coats with 4000 steel wool. I want a matt finish that can be stripped if I get paint on it. They make my 4345's look shabby.:banghead:

I must have got some of riessen's magic by spending time with him

Krunchy,

I get this stuff in rolls. It comes 1 m wide or 3' 3" 3/8 . Stuff I use is made by 3m. Some of the more common veneers come in sheet form ready to iron on. The process is quite simple. It just takes a little practice. Just make sure joins and splits are taped. Too much heat will cause shrinkage and subsequent splits. Try your best to get rid off blisters at the start. Not worry though ,as you can go back reheat to get rid of them.

Good luck, Rich

Say, in post #15, it appears you have glued solid walnut strips, cut at 45 degree angles on the ends, on the front edges of the cabinets, I presume to replace the angled front edge that many JBL monitors generally have. If so, do you use a router to cut it from its square shape to the angled shape? what sort of router blade do you use to cut this? Or am I way off here? I would very much like to produce that same angle on the front edges of the cabinets I am currently building, so any clarification for this router ignorant reader would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Russellc

Hi Russell,

this is the cutter I used. I dont know if it is correct angle 1/2 shank -67 1/2 degrees.

Its what I had in the shop.

John

That will work but I think it is 70 degrees??? Which leaves you with a 30 degee angle on your cabinet edge?:hmm:

Picured looks like a 22.5 degree chamfer bit.

Rich,
Looks great! You have a fantastic match with your veneer and your walnut stock edge. Was this luck? or accomplished with stains?

Did you recess your port tubes from the back of the baffle or are they flush mount? Everything has a nice clean look!:applaud:

Hi blog ,

I spent more time on these than the 4345's. I learned a lot from my first project. I have thought about re-doing the 45's......someday ! It's nice to come home to wood. A completly different zone to welding stainless.
I changed the back edge to protect the veneer also.

Hi Rich,

Beautiful work and such a dual pair!! The 4345's look like they've got the horn ready to go trolling for unsuspecting passersby's and then "SNAP" and reel them in via the port!

Obvious you have lavished a lot of time and effort and care to rebuilding these. I only wish I could do half as good a job on mine eventually.

Someone will be lucky to get these.

regards,

Bart

Hi Rich!
The speakers came out beautiful, your veneering skills are very meticulous and you were able to do it with one leaf of veneer without having to book or end match. I can only begin to imagine what those must sound like, gotta be good!
I am sure Papa Lansing would most emphatically approve of your efforts.
Looking forward to seeing your next endeavor (TIK's?).

Thank you for sharing with us.

Hi Rich:

I forgot about your 4333A project. You mentioned it when we last met at HP's. I haven't had too much forum time these past few months and haven't followed your efforts. Looks like they came out quite nicely.

Drop me a line when you have some time - what's next on your agenda?

Krunchy,

the black horns on top of the 4345's are a clue.

Then we're thinking 2 x 2245 , 1 x 2202 or 1200 fe and a " Be driver. Charge coupled and bi-amped of course:applaud:

Rich,
I was thinking TIK's from the curved cabinets I saw in some of your pictures from the Dinner In England thread. Regardless, I am sure they will be spectacular.
Take care!
