View Full Version : New Foilcals on Ebay??
They look nice, but aren't authentic. Does it matter?

Does it matter?I wouldn't think so. If the workmanship is good, you won't find anything closer to the real mccoy...
Those look really, really nice. Wonder if the seller / maker would consider some requests? :hmm:

I still say $50.00 a pair is alot of money for reproductions.

That's just about half what the guy from Japan was charging and hey these are made in the U.S.A. :applaud:
I know myself I try to buy Canadian or American first, and if that fails:( then I will look elsewhere.:blah:

I believe this might be familiar...

Good-one!! Exactly the same dood!
I think that price is easy. Foilcals are so dear to the true look. These are not trivial nor careless reproductions - they look incredibly detailed and true to the original.

We should count our blessings that somone is makeing these and I don't expect he will be selling thousands of them either so the unit price is in a very reasonable range. Another item to be greatful for and I'm not questioning the price is the reproduction foam grills which are better than the originals.

Actually, its not - try getting any kind of quality, limited demand item like this - The stuff from Japan is higher PLUS longer shipping times ...
If its too steep you can wait for NOS to appear ... and wait ... and wait ...
But I'm already talking to him about getting foilcals for my L200+ controls - they aren't L200s and they aren't quite L300s, etc. - Nice thing is he says he'll even do custom stuff!
heck I've deal with other folks that just want to whine about stuff in email and take forever
to do nothing ... this guy has great customer service!
(I dealt with him in the past for L-36 grill pegs - fine product!)

I have had several sets of these made and they are awesome. The custom things dont really cost much more, and he is open to any type of reproduction not just JBL. I say count our blessings because when people like RJ are gone the rest of us will have a hard time restoring and maintaining our precious JBL collections.
How about a hand for RJ :applaud::applaud::applaud::applaud::applaud::appl aud:

Last time I got JBL grill pins from him (Jan 2008) he was at
timmermann@neb.rr.com
He does vintage grill pins as well as the foilcal repros

He'll even make custom ones to order - He offered to make new foilcals for my 3ways in L200 boxes
if I sent dimensions for the Mid and High pot positions.
I spoke to him once and he offer to make a nice pair of repros for my 4341s if I send him my single foilcal,
I've just had higher priorities.

Mornin' again, Bigyank!
Well, I wrote him via that ebay ad I linked to,
told him a LHS member was trying to reach him,
and asked for a current email.
I just got this reply from him:
Hello,
My email is still
timmermann@neb.rr.com (http://us.mc905.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=timmermann@neb.rr.com)
I have many foilcals.
4345 is one I have not made. I need a photo, to go by.
I have the 4355 , 4333a, 4425, 4435.
Regards, R.j

I bought some stuff from Rudy as recently as two-weeks ago, using that address: timmermann@neb.rr.com He was very helpful and even refunded me half the shipping charge when he realized he'd charged too much. The only caveat I'd mention would be that his vintage repro JBL logos are plastic. It says so sort of buried in the text, but it's not obvious. I knew it, and they are nice enough, but there's just a bit of detail lacking in the machine that routes the design on the plastic, enough to make for a a bit of a jagged edge inside the "B" and elsewhere. Just mentioned it in case there happen to be some real perfectionists on this site (not here!?). If I had a macro lens maybe I could show you what I'm talking about (my kids have one). I'm still pleased with them, since they're replacing missing plastic ones on my (second) pair of L7s anyway. Look better than nothing. His grill pins are very nice.
Rudy's repro is on the left. On the right is original metal JBL. Yes the repro is slightly smaller:

I guess I missunderstood...I was doing a little research yesterday evening & I thought Rudy had reproduced the foilcals & grill badges for the 4345's years ago but apparently he's never done them.
Was there someone in Asia doing them already? :dont-know

I'm seriously considering building a reproduction pair....or even better if I can talk Saeman into firing up his saw for me :D
I've amassed all the drivers for the project...I'll have lots of questions for you 4345 experts :)

I'm seriously considering building a reproduction pair....Everyone should probably own a pair at least once in their lifetime.
I've amassed all the drivers for the project...That's good, I was mildly irritated when I went to buy another pair of brand new 2307's from JBL and someone else had already cleaned out their stock...
I'll have lots of questions for you 4345 experts :)It's pretty straightforward...
