Dear LH members.

I have decided to sell my 4341 monitors to make way for a new speaker project.

If you are looking for a functional collectors item, you could do worse. These speakers are built with the quality that made JBL famous. The driver complement is robust, and the cabinets are made with dreadnought construction. As many of you already know, these speakers are the predecessors to the famed and coveted 4343 monitors. These are a fine, unmolested example of the 4341 and they were purchased from the original owner through an "i-soldit" type store in Philadelphia about six months ago. Since that time I have used these as my main system, replacing my composite XPL 250's.

Speaker condition:

To the best of my knowledge, these speakers are 100% original. The only thing that may have been replaced are the 2231 cones, although this is purely speculative on my part. I was definitely the first to switch the 2405 over to the other side to make a semi-symmetrical pair. Diaphragms are original, as are the crossovers and other related components.
I have the front grills which are in very good condition, however, one badge is missing.
The serial numbers are 10072 and 10074, respectively.

The speakers are currently loaded with 2235H SFG drivers with close serial numbers, and clean baskets. They were freshly reconed by ALTEL Sound of Bridgeport, Connecticut with genuine JBL cone kits. Rich, the current manager personally reconed these for me, as he knows what a fusspot I am. I also have the original 2231A drivers with refoamed cones. The cabinets are in excellent condition, however the veneer does show age with some impressions and scratches, they have never been refurbished, stained or painted. Some corners are slightly compromised, albeit to a very small degree.

This sale will also include the JBL 1974 product catalog and 1974 4340/4341 brochure.
I will be posting a link with detailed and numerous high resolution photos sometime tomorrow.
Photos will include internal and external shots.

Asking Price:

I currently have about $2650 into these speakers, excluding the cost of the 2235H drivers. The 2235H drivers cost me about $500 after all was said and done. I would like to get $2500 for the monitors with the original 2231A drivers installed. Should you want the 2235H drivers instead, please add $500 to the cost. This may sound expensive, however, I am selling at a loss.
Should these speakers sell through LH, I will donate $100 to LH and $150 should they sell with the 2235H drivers. The $3000 package price includes the 2231A and 2235H drivers.

Contact information:

I may be reached through LH or by telephone at area code 203-232-4076.

Shipping information:
I have no desire to ship these, as they are far too fragile and heavy. However, I would be willing to meet someone within say a 250 mile radius in exchange for the cost of fuel and tolls.
I am located in Newtown Connecticut, zip code 06470. Thank you for your consideration,

Sincerely, newzenith.

My restored pair of these are serving me well and later this fall I plan to use newer CC networks to tweak them further.

One big caveat is the original surround on the 10's. That stuff hardens with age and WILL affect the critical LM frequency balance. Since that particular 2121 kit isn't available anymore, and using the updated 2122 kit will result in a slight unbalance ( unless changing out the networks ), the final pricetag might be a bit steep.

In addition the 2420 HF diaphrams are fragile and replacing them with coated 2425's will allow for a lot more headroom when listening to robert plant on 11.

BUT there were precious FEW of this version made ( single baffle rattle-free cabinet ) and they cannot help but increase in value. The real bangers will gravitate towards the 4345 high power clones with newer drivers and the fossil crowd will enjoy their age-diminished hearing with old 130 based woofer systems on headless tube amps...

But for day-to-day enjoyment of a real balanced system, these are a good ticket and will probably pass the SAF test. Big but not a full-blown refrigerator sized box

Be SURE to biamp them with the correct crossover / cards and for value sake, use the 2231's. You can always build a DIY project down the road with newer ferrite/Nd magnets and larger drivers.

Wow... another 43XX owner from Newtown? ;)
Nice to meet you, I'm from there, as is another forum member (who bought my 4343s). Nice place, and apparently a hotbed of big box JBL lovers...:applaud:

well,

storm missed the playful tease there....

I picked them up and they are still in the car. They were very nice. Zenith was unbelieveably knowledgeable and a great resource. I spent many hours in his house and it was very gracious of him to let me stay there and explain the speakers from top to bottom.

They are in exceptional condition, a truly rare find. I am glad everything ended up working out. The cabinets, paint, drivers, cloth etc are all excellent. He is going to refoam the midbass for me down the road.

The sound? Ya, my first time with the JBLs. quite a different animal than the Altec 19s.

I must say, if you like coherence and pointsource presentation, then the big full-duty 19 horn is for you....

The 4 drivers in the 4341 provide more texture , for lack of a better word. Though the crossovers are probably very enjoyable in their present unmolested state, i can see how tinkering with a new crossover may be a good upgrade.

I know it did wonders for the 19 so i will have to reserve judgement.

It wasn't love at first hear vis a vis the 4341, but after turning down the HF and realizing that i was used to a warmer system, i began to enjoy the 4341.

I still havent heard them in my system, and for lack of space, they will literally be in front of my already huge 19s, i am sure that they will kick ass.

again, glad to finally open the book on 43xx....

want to mention that Zenith's L250 project is nothing short of phenomenal.. His work is meticulous and his driver completment just blew me away, like the first time i heard big Wilson speakers. I kept trying to buy them off him instead, but he wasnt hearing it heh.

Also, he wasnt willing to sell me his paragon for 2 grand, no matter how much i pleaded hehe..

so ya, thank you again, much much more to report in the coming weeks as i really start to enjoy these.

Found an old quote of mine from January that i forgot i posted, in reference to a pair of 4341:

"damn delicious looking speakers. just when i think ive hit an endgame there is something more i need to buy-to-try.

too bad they dont have an public hifi library where you can just check these things out :)"

guess i finally got my chance.... been chasing them for the better part of a year, and now they are in their new home

I want to try a JBL four way as well. I'm still getting to know my 19's and will eventually do a total overhaul. Then I'll consider another big speaker.:bouncy:

SPWAL, Hope you had the chance to drive down mainstreet in Newtown where both PAULB & I, as kids grew up. Very historical. Good luck with the "new" sound :)

...again, glad to finally open the book on 43xx.... Envious as I am, knowing well that feeling. And I know full well, it grows with tenure...

...after turning down the HF and realizing that i was used to a warmer system, i began to enjoy the 4341.Yea, Giskard did some pretty thorough testing of the L-pads, and they mightily impact the impedance. If you can, "0" is best for least influence.

One of the best aspects of this forum has been the acquainting of sellers with buyers - real buyers looking to venture a vintage path pretty rarely found. Damned cool...

Keep us apprised of your appreciation, refurbishing and whatnot.
