It's clone in custom cabinet or at least it appears to be not knowing what the crossover is.

Merlin,

Looks like a 2122H mid cone so it would be a 4344. Weird driver locations though.

Except there's a 2245 in there so it's more like a 4345:bouncy:

A very nice 4345 clone with probably a smaller footprint, and a baffle design inspired by 4343s?

I like the idea of removable ports for optional tuning. But where's the doghouse then.. :hmm:

Agh! Now if I were to say it's not a custom unit or clone but a commercially available product, would that throw you guys or does anyone recognise it?

I wish it was a new JBL commercial product, but it's so "improbable", that I am sure they are clones.

Just shows I need glasses.

Sounds like someone is cloning knock offs in Japan.

Shoehorning a 2245 into the 4344 box??

In any case the crossover needs to be totally re optimised for the centre line configuration and spacing of the drivers..the location of the slot also concerns me .......

If I was going that route I would make the box taller by 6 inches above the horn and add a 6 inch kick base and maintain the original width or add a 6 inch radius. For those not aware one of the reasons the 4345 projects so well is in fact the size of the baffle and spread of the drivers. In acoustic terms its basically a reflector as opposed to a diffuser like the smaller siblings.

I doubt if it images or matches the ripple (diffraction distortion) of the original design.

Ah,

The Sansui junkie! Au-555 was my favorite.

Was this from your visit to Japan or was it Korea.

Do they serve Earl Grey tea?

I seriously hate that biamp switch and those termininals.

I think you posted it just to annoy me.

Japan Ian.

Believe it or not, you are looking at ,what was sold as, a Sansui loudspeaker. I wondered if anyone knew the history of these models?

I am very tempted to pick up a pair when I go over there next month.

Were they using JBL clone drivers or the real deal?

When was Sansui building these? I always enjoyed their speakers... more in the, "I can't believe they would think that could work." way, but enjoyed them none the less.:D

Is Sansui still around?

Real JBL drivers Widget.

I seem to recall someone mentioned Sansui sold a range of cabinets specifically designed for JBL drivers. I suspect these are an example of those. It was back in the 70's I think. Somewhat cheaper to have the woodwork made locally I suspect. I need to investigate more.

Hello Merlin

Do you know what they went for?? Do they command the same prices as the "real deal'?? That makes a lot of sense to do that. It must be quite a bit easier shipping drivers and crossovers than completed 4345's.

Rob:)

Merlin,

Here are some links to the real Sansui range.

Their amps were more what Sansui was about .............

JVC and others like Pioneer had similar lines that I would call a band box series..large woofers and lots of horns and tweeters..as distinct from the jobs Lin and other like Celestion and other British mobs were pushing.

Anyone remember the Jension 6...that system actually worked.

Thanks Ian. I always liked their tuners and of course the SR222 turntable

Here's their EC-138 speaker

And this is a varient of the EC-146 (you can just see the model number on the front. Notice how the baffle is adjustable to take the 2241 if required.

They are cute!

Must go to Japan one of these days....

Well if you acquire one of these Merlin they will make an interesting baseline for your Tadmanic's.

The idea of a removable woofer template and the port template has possiblities for prototyping. With a false bottom to adjust the Vb you could compare the 2235 and the 2245 and try alternative tunings.
