I have a couple of JBL 2130 12" drivers that have e-120-8 ohm recone kits in them. The cones/caps are in pretty sad shape.

Can I recone them to 2202 for a 4350 project? And what is the correct JBL recone kit?

Thanks, Bill

The 2130 is the pro version of the K-120, E-120.

I have heard that the 2202 is identical to the E-120 except for the dust cap.:hmm:

Before asking about or making "I heard" statements it's best to refer to ( and search ) the library and / or the many posts dedicated to the magnet and cone kit interchangeability subject...:)

E120 is not the same magnet as the 2202. Use these keywords to search for the reason:

gap depth size strength 12 musical pro response weight flux kit

Yep....that's true..though the back motor casting is different. Squared off edges on 2130/2135.

....and the E-series have bigger magnets. 7/8" vs. 3/4" thick for ceramic(ferrite)22xx series which makes 1.35T vs. 1.2T gap strength.

The alnico D/K 120 series has the same magnet and gap strength as the 2202.

Nope. The 2202 has a copper edgewound coil and paper dustcap....thus less high frequency extension. D/K/E-120/130 has aluminum wire edgewound voice coil

Are you saying a 2130 is not the same as a k-120 ?

Is that what subwoof's post says?

But your post says this:

It looks to me like he was pointing out your "hearsay" which is often-times incorrect

Hi Edge Thanks for the heads up on the copper and Alum. info.

Just wondering what do you think makes the most difference in H.F responce on those units compared to the 2202?

The voice coil being Alum. or the dust cap being Alum.?

Also has anyone taken the time to compare the height and position of the coil winding's on the 2202 and K-120 or the actual turns on the former?

the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth....sigh...

Bits and pieces only contribute to the issue - there are many different *castings* for the alnico series even within the SAME model number. A good example is the K120 which had 3 different magnets that I can remember even though the specs are the SAME.

For another example ( as edgewound mentioned ) the beveled magnet 2231A is the same spec as the non-beveled 136A. Same for the 12" 2203A / 124A

When john *inferred* that the E120 and 2202 were the same, he was incorrect because the MAGNET thickness is different.

7/8 thick for the *E* musical instrument ( 120,130,140 ) types.

3/4 thick for the *pro* types ( 2202,03,04,05,25,35,and a LOT more ).

Now their respective kits ARE interchangeable and the gap depth is the same but the stronger *E* magnet will change the HF ( and LF ) response of the 2202 and make it no longer the flat REPRODUCER it was designed to be. However it will work just fine for a guitar player who likes the sound of the heavier, copper coil and paper dome.

I did not mention at all the MANY different cones, surrounds, coils, dustcaps, massrings, etc that make each speaker type different ( or similar ) than other JBL types. There is a very descriptive "pronote" in this library that delves into the specifics and should be a MUST READ for any DIY person.

Also there is a "goes into list" published by jbl that will give a general guideline and a careful reading of JBL's catalogs ( with all of the typo's ) over the years will show what's interchangeable within reason.

To know all of the can and cannot's requires many years of sniffing glue or dealing with raw frame JBL products in BOTH the pro and consumer lines and even then some of us old timers get it wrong..:(
