View Full Version : Best JBL speaker elements for 100Hz-700Hz?

Hello,
what will be your recommendations for upgrading my home system in the 100Hz to 700Hz range?
Today I'm using;
Paradigm Servo 15" from 17Hz-120Hz
JBL 2227 15" from 120Hz-700Hz / ICE1000ASP with balanced trafos
JBL 2450 2" with a Tractrix horn 700Hz≈17kHz / Audion Silver Night MkII 300B
BSS 366T Electronic crossover with som eq for room corrections.
The system sounds to me very good but I'm sure there must be even better built JBL elements than 2227 for that region.
Any suggestions regarding elements and suitable box size? Efficency, crossoverpoints etc. are not an issue since I can freely adjust with the BSS366T.
Would prefer a sealed box.
Thanks in advance

Harry

In the oldies there is the 2234H that would fill this gape quite nicely as what I have read here.

A bit older but worth looking at: 2012H / 2020H (200 mm / 250 mm)
JBL's New Maximum Output, Midrange/Low-Frequency Transducer (http://www.jblpro.com/pub/technote/tn_v1n24.pdf)
(Tech Note 1/24)

IMHO the 2227 is about THE best 15" midbass that JBL has made. the freq range 100 to 700 is right where it's designed to work.

It's hard to beat...and if it where me I'll keep it. in fact i'm looking for some 2227's

If you want a smaller trans. then that's another issue

Smaller transducers are not so essential, but I would not mind 10" or a 12" with a slightly straighter level between 80Hz-200Hz.
What I would like to have is a bit more deeper slam on the kickdrum. I do like the chest impact of horns and I think could use a bit more of that. Today the 2227" are placed in sealed boxes with the size 45cm*45cm*55cm.
I'm very happy so far but I like to get a bit happier. :-)
For comparison I have a pair of B&W801 and a pair of McIntosh XRT-22 and they will not replace the system I use today, no chance.
Thank for suggestions so far.

Harry

well, if that's the case then try some 2226's just under the 2227's, that will give you some "kick". try different crossover points for taste.

Good luck

If you want punch from about 70Hz and up try an E-145. It has half the moving mass of the other 15's and is fast as hell.

I think it would be preferable to run a 2220 from 100 - 500 or one of the newer drivers already mentioned and a pair 2123 from 500- 1000 or even a pair of 2118J's

100 - 700 hz is a kind of anyways bandwith and its not going to give you piston range operation ( the sound you want to keep up with the horn) with a large driver (older Prof series driver). You always build a conical straight horn and see how that goes..ref to Steve Schell.

I agree with what you say in principal, I just didn't think it was in his design. Personally I'm wanting to build a E145,2227, 2012, 2446 system myself. Altho my crossover points would be a little higher for personal taste ( too many years with the C35)

as far as the 2220 I would disagree as the 2227 is it's replacement and has better numbers and transient response than the 2220. also, if he were to use a 10" cone, might want to try the 2012 instead of the 2123. I've compared both and while I like them both I lean towards the 2012.

well Harryup, as you can see you can get many answers from us. Good luck with whatever you choose. You might want to check Drew Daniels designs as you're coming close to that.

take care

Thank you all so far.
Something needs to be tested. I have been happy for too long now. :)
Or maybe a pair of TAD 2" would be a better way to go?
I play almost all kind of music but it tends to be more and more acoustical music so low distortion is really important compared to high efficency.
