LE5-10 verses 104H-2

My problem is this. I owned a set of 4311B Monitors way back in the late 70s. I loved them however due to circumstances beyond my control (A THIEF) wanted them more then i did. I finally managed to get a nice pair off of ebay 6 months ago. Now im in love again. They sound great except 5 weeks ago i set the eq wrong and pushed them to hard and blew the voice coil on one LE5-10. i can not find that speaker any where and recones are hard to come by. what would happen if i put a set of 104H-2s in place of the LE5-10s. I know the rolloff on the 2213H woofer to the LE5-10 mid is at 1.5kHz up to 6.0kHz where the LE25-2 tweet responds above 6.0kHz. I dont want to change that bell like clarity they have with the OEM drivers. If this is possable would there need to be crossover changes? I think the 104H-2 responds around 800kHz. Will i loose everything from 800kHz to 1.5kHz Please Advise. I NEED HELP!

Hi Propman, If you want to keep your cabs original, keep a watch on Ebay. The Le5-6 -8 -10 and -12 are all the same apart from the color. Black or silver, which you can easily refinish to your requirements.

Thanks, Allanvh; if you dont mind can you answer one more question, I have read that the LE5-10 has copper wound voice coils where the LE5-12 has a ribbon voice coil. I know the LE5-10 does in fact have wound voice coils and the 2213H woofer in the 4311B has a ribbon voice coil. I will do some more research on the -6 -8 series to see which have wound voice coils and which have ribbons. My question is does the copper round wound voice coil have a different sound than the ribbon voice coils. I know the rest of the specs are the same.

Correction, i just looked at voice coil out of one of my spair 2213H woofers that is in need of a recone. That voice coil is also copper round wound. Sorry for the mistake.:banghead:

Hi again, the LE-6 -8 10 -12 were all round wire voice coils and all the other, as far as I know, were flat wound ribbon. The flatwounds were more efficient. I have never had the chance to compare the LE5-2 or the othe flatwounds with a roundwound. Do a search for "LE-5 Matrix" on the site. You will find all the different models listed there.

Blowing the mid out with too much equalization sounds like it should have been painful on the ears!!

Are you certain that the mid driver is blown and not a loose connection, dirty Lpad, etc.?

You could replace the LE5-10 with the 104H-2 or -3 but there will be a difference in sound. Can’t say how much but the high end response of the two drivers is quite different. You will want to replace both mids, of course, since they are so distinct in response.

Good news is that the repair kit for the LE5-10 is still listed on the JBL Pro list. Retail is $86 so the total cost could range from $90 to a little over $100 to fix with a new kit.

Your right, it was an exercise in stupidity! and Very LOUD. I do know in fact that the voice coil is in fact fried. I put my volt/Ohm meter to the positive and negative terminals and read no Ohms resistance at all. After removing the cone and inspecting the voice coil it was obviously smoked. My first indication was with a simple test moving the cone in and out and feeling a very rough friction between the magnet motors.
