I'm not finding it in the old catalogs, and I have no way to get down there to grab it.... :(

Label clearly says Model 5050, and Hollywood, CA

Looks like Serial #144. :dont-know

TiDome warned us about people like you!:applaud:

Those who have never heard it might disparage it due to its appearance and components. Some might prefer dusty, old wood-covered boxes with corroded, tired networks, drooping spiders, and smelly old paper cones.

I wonder how many valuable old woofers the US govt has in warehouses around the world?

Well, that's certainly them, looks like. It's Ampex in Hollywood, just can't read that on the nameplate.

A couple of us are workin' on gettin' down there to snag that one.

Thanks, 10-Watt, for trackin' down the link....

can you tell whether those dust caps are domes or cones?

Either way, weather's pretty much destroyed 'em, I'd say, Thom... :(

Frames might be salvagable. Could be 150's.

Some people have fewer speakers and one truck.

It is a shame that this Ampex theatre system ended up out in the rain, but I have seen this happen before. Ampex made a valiant attempt to compete in the cinema sound business all through the 1950s, but ended the effort about 1960 AFAIK. Ross Snyder, who headed Ampex's theatre division, told me that when all was said and done Ampex "...hadn't made a dime..." on the venture.

Most of this equipment was built in Ampex's factory in North Hollywod. JBL couldn't supply the volume of gear needed at the time, so Ampex built the JBL designs and paid royalties.

There are at least a couple of cast aluminum radial horns that were built by Ampex first and later found their way into JBL's pro line (like 2350), so it wasn't purely a one way street design-wise.

My curiosity on the woofer is that if it is like mine I don't know if the vc was oh or uh but the top plate is thicker than 130 et all and thinner than LE15 K145 leaving me (less expert than a non expert) to believe that unless a kit is made one would have to be able to play with vc depth to make it work right. Informative replies are invited but if they fall into the "stupid idiot" "dumb jerk" variety I already have some left over from before so you can save yourself some energy.
