Q: What is this (fill in the blank)? ...which might more appropriately be...
Where can I find info on (fill in the blank)?

A: Have you looked in the Library? It's awkward to search through, but many items are there.
A: " " " " " Technical Reference Section?
A: jblpro.com, jbl.com, altecpro.com, alteclansingunofficial.nlenet.net
A: Is it Lansing (JBL or old-Altec) related? if not, you can ask (and might get a knowledgable
answer), but there are generic audio forums elsewhere.

Q: OK, how do I use the search function?

A: http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11392

Q: How much is this worth?

A: Ebay is a good indicator of current monetary value. Just because it says JBL or Altec
on it doesn't magically transform it into a pile of gold (automatically :)).

Q: Should I recone or refoam?

A: Probably. If you can't tell, perhaps someone here
can give you a referral to a local professional.

Q: I have a set of speaker drivers, can you help me design a speaker system?

A: Do some homework, put your ideas out there... you'll no doubt get opinions
along with some useful information. It's up to you to sort it out.

Q: Should I modify my crossover?

A: Is it broken? Might you be better off with a different system?
There are some documented success stories within.

Q: What (fill in the blank) are best?

A: The one's you installed in your modified (fill in the blank).

Q: What's the best JBL speaker?

A: The model you like the best.

Q: I have stuff for sale, who wants to buy it?

A: Specify a price or "make me an offer" and ask for responses via PM
(expect low offers)
State if/when sold or no longer for sale (for whatever reason).

...

(OK, this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but is there a place for something like this that
could be appended to now & then?)

-grumpy

Indeed... include all of the "stickies".

I've suggested this before, but here goes again:

A couple of sticky threads (e.g. one or two per subforum) with links to reference pages and ditto threads would go a long way IMHO.

Examples:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43093

http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2125

If people would read them, I'd agree. There have been sticky threads at the top of many
categories for a long time. They don't seem to address the most basic (and frequent)
questions that get answered over and over and over and over and over and over and ....

Perhaps we could take better advantage of their use somehow, as you've suggested.

I like your general idea of posting a draft FAQ. A combined FAQ and reference link collection could be worked out by us members, and once deemed good enough, be converted to sticky by the moderators.

Of course, in principle nothing prevents us from creating such threads and "bumping" them regularly, essentially achieving the same effect. However, such guereilla tactics would be a bit rude IMO.

A recent post of Giskard's indicated that work on improving the site is ongoing, so I suggest we await a moderator's reply before hacking away.

In any case, I (too), offer to help if wanted. E.g. we could probably distribute the responsibilities of keeping FAQ:s and/or reference link threads up-to-date.

Good point. Food for thought, or something to throw darts at. If it helps, I'm happy.

It's not a bad idea and has been kicked around quite a bit as a way of not rehashing the same questions over and over again. I have posted a couple of ideas along these lines. I think it has merit so why not see what we can come up with. We can link refoam questions with Bo's How Too thread as an example and expand on links we already have.

I absolutely support a FAQ. I think it would be great if several of you guys took it upon yourselves to form a group and come up with one. Once you are done submit it for review.

Selling/Buying

Q: How much is (fill in the blank) worth?
A: Ebay can be a good indicator of current monetary value. This site is not
a replacement for doing your homework and knowing your market. Responses
you may receive are opinion only, but may be based on some level of
experience (don't get too disappointed or excited prematurely).

Q: I'm selling or buying some large speakers, how should they be packed to
reduce the chance of damage?
A: A multi-member contributed thread on the topic:

Q: I have stuff for sale, who wants to buy it?
A: Specify a price or "make me an offer" and ask for responses via PM

State if/when sold or no longer for sale (for whatever reason).
Don't "threaten" to put it on Ebay... just do it.

Repairing/Modifying

Q: Should I recone or refoam?
A: Probably. If you can't tell, perhaps someone may respond with a referral
to a local professional.
A: The following is a member-contributed step-by-step photo and caption
thread for resurrounding a JBL low-frequency transducer:
http://audioheritage.csdco.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=469

Q: Where can I buy a recone or refoam kit?
A: Recone kits from the factory are only available to authorized service centers.
From there, it's up to the servicer to uphold his agreement with JBL to not supply
an un-authorized person with a recone kit, or risk losing his service account.
A: Refoams are not factory recommended, but there are a number of vendors that
sell "kits" with instructions. A forum search should turn up several.

Use the search function.

Q: What (fill in the blank) are best?
A: The one's you installed in your modified (fill in the blank).

Q: My JBL or Altec-Lansing computer speakers are not working properly...help?
A: Unfortunately, such equipment is outside the scope and intent of this site.

A nice addition might be:

Q. Where can I buy/get:

Grille cloth,
Speaker surrounds,
Cone assemblies,
Diaphragms,
Foilcals,
Knobs,
Lansaloy,
Goop,
Crossover parts,
Nameplates,
etc.

... etc.

Thanks Harvey!

Other than the obvious mfg web site links, many of the rest might be member
suggestions/contributions in the form of "group buys", custom manufacturing,
3rd party vendor sources (where appropriate), experience w/materials,
"I have a boatload of s*%T in my garage/basement...just PM", ...
Probably enough to be it's own sub-FAQ or link page ? not sure how to manage
such info, as some would expire more rapidly than others.

Cabinet refinishing/restoration links/threads/summaries might also be a useful
FAQ element.

.. There have been sticky threads at the top of many categories for a long time. They don't seem to address the most basic (and frequent) questions that get answered over and over and over and over and over and over and ....Yea, the basic guides, clues and such are there, but not at the top of the page.

They are only found under Forum Information - Read Only (http://audioheritage.csdco.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=11), an unfortunate title which may not encourage users research that area first, if at all.

Maybe this, and a broadened FAQ, should be placed at the top of the page...?

yep. stuck that in the draft FAQ as the 2nd link under "How to use the forum". :)
I agree about making this stuff obvious and visible. Unfortunately (at least in my
opinion), the current obvious clickable FAQ thingy is about vBulletin, as opposed
to a Lansing Heritage Forum FAQ. -grumpy

If the surround is shot more than likely the the voice coil suspension is following suit. Reconing is always preferred unless the recone kit is NLA.

... was going to title this "go FAQ yourself", but somehow that seemed inappropriate
and the intent would undoubtedly be misunderstood (I'm a sucker for bad puns,
and the phrase quite literally is the subject).

Someone else is going to have to pick up the FAQ for there to be progress.

Lots of pieces of good ideas have surfaced as FAQ suggestions (e.g., driver/part
compatibility charts that already exist here, full and layman's guide to recone/refoam
and why, etc... ). Search for FAQ and look at recent posts.

Happy to pick this back up at a later time if effort is still required, but
I'll be out for awhile. You kids have fun (hopefully "two eyed" fun and games ;)).

Hi Grump... you are certainly on to something here and there have been several very good additions to your initial list. We need to flush this out with answers and links... once accomplished we can post a cleaned up version as a sticky and then it would be available to all newbies... and those who miss it could always be directed to it.

Repairing/Modifying

Q: My JBL (fill in the blank) is broken... where can I get it fixed?
A: Naturally, at your local JBL Authorized Service Center ... or failing that,
feel free to ask for recommendations here. Try to describe the issue fully.

Q: My Altec (fill in the blank is broken... where can I get it fixed?
A: Aside from the Unofficial Altec Lansing web site for references,
http://alteclansingunofficial.nlenet.net/Repairs.html
you -might- actually try Altec http://www.altecpro.com/support/professionals.htm
or Great Plains Audio http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/
or ???

Q: Should I recone or refoam?
A: Probably. If you can't tell, perhaps someone may respond with a referral

Cloth/Foam (e.g., JBL Studio Monitor Blue, L100 quadrille foam, ...)
Replacing
Cleaning
Paint (e.g., matching JBL Studio Monitor Blue)
Driver coatings (e.g., whitening Aquaplas)

Then there's the not necessarily as obvious:
Member supplied materials/services/recommendations
(e.g., Grille cloth, sources for speaker surrounds, foam grilles, foilcals ...
some being reproduction, some "recycled", some old stash)
Ebay, Craigslist, ...
