View Full Version : 4343 - Alternatives for 2121 ?

I would like to build a speaker similar to the 4343 monitor. I have most components except for the 2307 horn and the 2121 10" driver.
Probably could build some short round horn to temporarily substitute the 2307 until eventually one surfaces on ebay.
The 2121 is probably much harder to get though. I saw in some similar earlier thread some proposals. Some suggest to use the 2123. That pops up on ebay from time to time too. Now someone offered me Electrovoice DL-10X as some possible alternative. I wander if anyone has used these drivers and could share some experience.
(hope it is not considered offensive to ask this question in a Lansing Heritage forum; actually most stuff I have is JBL and Altec!)

Regards

Claus

How about a pair of 2122H's? I have one pair left.

Hi Claus!

I went through the same shit.
At the Moment I use the 2012H which are nice transducer but do not fit to the 4343 design.
I tried 2123 also. Forget it!
One chance is to take Giskards offer. JBL rates the 2122H as "acoustic equivalent, slightly different usually improved"
Many people incl. Giskard rate the 2122H better anyway.
Another posibility would be if you could find any of these speakers defect or only the baskets:
LE10A (I have a working pair)
LE10H
LE111A
LE111H
2123H/J
E110
K110
These baskets can be reconed as 2121. I could do that for you (I guess you live in Germany?) if you could bring the baskets. I tried for 1 year without success.

For the 2307 I PM you a source.

I heard the 4343 of Guido. The tuning does not fit. Also an adjustment of the frequency switch did not lead to the satisfying result. I think, you should try for using the official successors. Giskard has two. Take this or make some with other baskets (ask Guido)

Hi Guido!

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here!?

I have to ask, what's wrong with the 2123?
Why would you discharge them?

I will soon be receiving several 2226's and several 2123's, which I was hoping to be able to use for bass and mid-bass.

I was planning to put 2x2226H in each bin tuned to 40 Hz (200L) and 2x2123J in a closed or perhaps vented 25L sub-chamber, although I haven't decided which yet.

On top of that I thought I would use my 2445J and my 075's.

I would be grateful for any suggestions and comment's you could pass on, if you think I'm on the wrong track.

Hi Pangea!

Nothing is wrong with the 2123. It just do not fit to the 4343 network and overall design.

The 2121 seems to be a very special driver.

All three have a 0.280" top plate.
All three currently have a moving mass of roughly 26 grams.

The 2121 has a voice coil winding depth of 0.280"

The 2122 has a voice coil winding depth of 0.180"

The 2123 has a voice coil winding depth of 0.420"

They are not interchangeable...

OK, thanks for the info, but I still wonder, if/what typical caracteristics differ between them.
I mean, if they're not interchangeable, then I could do with some help on what goes where and why and please don't misunderstand me, I AM talking about JBL drivers here!;)

Ok, look at the chart posted at the top of this thread and see which driver was used in which system. Run the voltage drives of each of the networks in a spice package. Find the 4344 Mk II schematic I posted on another thread and run that network's voltage drive in a spice package as well. Look at the T-S parameters of each of the drivers and note their Re and Le values. I posted the TS parameters on another thread and you can look them up on the JBL Pro website too.

Thank you very much for that RARE info!

Hi Guido

Can you explain what happen in the sound when I change the 2121 for 2123 in the 4343?

Thanks
