6230/6260/6290 Input Voltage Conversion

Anyone have any info on converting 6230/6260/6290 amps to run on 220VAC/50Hz?

The manuals read as though there were units produced that did run on 220, but I don't see an "alternate" wiring method or a different part number transformer.

The power transformer in that series of JBL/urei amps have a SINGLE primary winding and therefore are not convertable. Urei actually made them in their own factory....

Sometimes power transformers were made with dual windings and they were wired for one method and sealed before final assembly but I have never carved up the outer wraps to see on these amps.

You are SOL unless you can get a step-up transformer that can handle the current as the power transformers are no longer available. This the same issue with ALL of the US-sold crown grounded bridge amps ( micro/macro/etc ) but they DID use a multi-tapped transformer in most of the amcron export versions.

I was able to install a toroidal type transformer into a 6260 once to boost the raw DC voltage for a customer who needed a high power output into a 16 ohm load but that was a special deal.

Ok - if you have 220 amps you can simply run 220 from the elec panel with standard 12-2 with ground romex wire.

Remember 220v systems do NOT have a neutral so it's the same deal as a range , air conditioner or dryer.

to be clever, use 12-3 with ground and include the neutral so you will hae 2 additional 120V circuits for the SS stuff.

how many amps are you planning to use and how?

I've got two 115V 6230s. Plan is to use them with my 4315Bs.

I've been thinking about buying a 6290 and was "just checking" into the possibility of it being modded.

BTW: I travel a lot and will probably be in Europe for the next year or two.

The 6290 has TWO transformers and you could wire them in series if the load for each channel was essentially the same. You would have to disable one of the power switches.

Dealing with the 2 speed fan ckt would require some more thought..
