Directly from the auction -

(Love the reference to the pair that recently sold for $1300.00).

:)

http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gifOverall I'd say that the cabinets are in good to good plus condition. Kind of subjective but good is very safe. One top has an area where the finish is off and I tried burnt umber pigment to fill it in. The other top has the finish intact but it is not perfect. The sides and bottom trim on both cabinets are fine. The grilles are not broken and there are no missing pieces. One grille cloth has faded some. Probably because that speaker was near a window for 5 years that got morning light.

I added fiberglass padding to the cabinet interiors to get a better "tuning" of the bass for me. It can easily be removed if desired.

The internal wiring was replaced with 336 strand OHFC copper rope lay wire. I opened the xovers, picked out the tar/pitch and replaced the capacitors with good quality metalized polyprop capacitors. (F-Dyne-southern electronics) I personally do not like film & foil. Because the caps are now more accessible, they can be replaced easier than I found it to be.

I added Bi-wire type speaker connector cups to the back of each cabinet and had the xovers outside of the cabinets in case I wanted to experiment. I can reinstall the xovers into the cabinets if desired but I need to know that's what you want.

The wood screws holding the back panels on were replaced with "T" nuts and machine screws for a tighter seal and to avoid stripped out wood screw holes.
As far as I know the 806A diaphrams are original Altecs. One is perfect and the other has a small concave dent on the side, but not a serious one. That's the way I got it so I don't know how it happened but it doesn't seem to affect the real world performance. FYI Great Plains Audio in OK will replace the diaphram and remag the Alnico magnets for $94.50 each.

The 806A's measure 8.8 & 8.7 DC ohms and they are attached to the original 811B horns. The date codes are 6815 & 6854.

The woofers look fine with no tears or bad areas of the accordian surrounds and the surround sealant isn't running onto the cone areas. They are 416-Z's.The same as 416-A but without the metal magnet cover and are typically found in Valencias and Flamencos. The woofer pics, unless enlarged, might show a funky look but that's the glare from the seal in the accordian surrounds. They measure 10.8 & 12.5 DC ohms. I'd love to put that they "match" in resistance but in reality, as some of you must already know, all that a DCR voice coil reading shows is the approx. AC impedance of the driver and if many windings might be shorted together due to excessive heat from overpowering.

The paper on the back of the speakers says 8-16 ohms but in looking at the resistance readings of the drivers and based on my own experience, these speakers sound better on the 16 ohm tap and I used a tube amplifier with them.

When I stopped using these speakers in Oct of 2006 the 806A level controls were operating with no scratchy sound as in oxidized resistance elements or wiper.

Why am I selling them? Because I bought a pair of Altec Model 19's and I have a small house so there's no room for 4 big speakers. I prefer a local pickup because I really don't want to get involved with crating and palletizing or foreign shipments.

The drivers are working with no problems and my description goes beyond most so I have nothing to hide. Would everyone mention a dent in a diaphram and might they "fudge" resistance readings a little to "make" matched woofers? Besides my E-Bay feedback, my honesty is documented in Audiogon feedback uner DaveV.

Any arrangement other than a Paypal, US postal money order or cash payment must be approved by seller first.

So to recap the terms: sold as is, (working) payment by PayPal, US postal money order or cash. Other than a home pickup by buyer, anything else must be approved by seller first with payment terms agreed upon by seller and buyer. Payment to be received within 7 days of auction close or item may be offered to next highest bidder, relisted or sold elsewhere.

If you have been watching the going prices for Valencias/Flamencos or just the drivers in "parted out" Valencias/Flamencos, you will know that my starting price is not out of line.

The speakers are located about 20 minutes from downtown Augusta,GA /15 minutes from I-20/ an hour from Columbia, SC/about 2 1/2 hours from I-95/ about 2 3/4 hours from Downtown Atlanta/maybe 3 1/2 hours to Spartanburg, SC. The zip is 29801, downtown Aiken,SC.

Added 4-15: In case you don't think my starting price, or the lowest price you might get these for is a good deal, then look at this completed auction with barely and info describing what your getting. And then look at the selling price.
