I feel lucky to own the PA-5 with that record price.
Is the PA-7 that much better? So, in reality - the PA-5 should get $600-$800 due to it's incrdeible sound...correct?
I love it and will never replace it. Well, if I find a Mac 2100 or better at a yardsale...but since that will never happen, I am very content on the Nakamichi.
Thank you, Source.

PA-7's average $700.00 to $1100.00 depending on condition, and what the amp comes with. (original boxes and manuals) The above amp is second generation PA-7AII. It is a very sought after model. I have owned 4 of them, currently using a mint like new one with both factory boxes and owners manual in my two channel room.

-Storm.You see? Your doing it already! Whats better than what I have?
You dont really need 225wpc@8ohms for the speakers you have. It might do this or that, but you dont need it, especially in the size room your speakers are in.
Relax, forget about the other Nak, enjoy what you have!
Ill give you a month with the 100 watt Nak! Cause your gonna look for better, but ya know the old saying? If it aint broke, DONT fix it!

That PA-7 or the PA-7AII would probably spit those Altec woofers right out on to the floor. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I have a Crown Macro Tech 3600VZ if you want to try something with HELLACIOUS power!
Better than that? I have three, so try two, each in bridge mono, one amp per speaker.

"How to catch the magic smoke?"
:D
I always refer to the smoke as an S.O.S signal being sent out. Like I said in a previous post (I think it was those 5 way whatever's :barf:) it's fun to take P.O.S speakers and plug them into a AC wall outlet. Got many kicks out of doing that back in the day. :rotfl:

I recently purchased a Threshold Fet9 preamp and I'm quite pleased with it. With all the buzz going on re amps for Storm I was wondering how a Threshold S500 II would compare to the Nak PA7 II for powering my L300. Any member have experience with older Threshold amps?

same here. all this talk about nelson pass juice had me almost pull the trigger on an Pass Labs X-150. For now, im waiting on a possible high-power aleph clone instead.

Majick,
If you mated a PA-7AII, with that Threshold FET 9 preamp I think it would be heaven on the seventh floor. As far as power goes the PA-7AII will make you L300's sing. The PA-5 I sold Storm I ran it for 9 hrs. in to a pair of 250TI's, it is less then half the power of a PA-7AII it was most impressive. Very clean, smooth, plenty of detail, and nice tight low end. The preamp I used was the Nakamichi CA-5AII. Good luck on your search for your perfect amp.
I also have copies of the press release on both power amps PA-7 & PA-5, very cool stuff for the collection.
P.S. I have not used any of the older Nelson Pass power amps but I think he started work for Nakamichi in the mid to late 80's using Stasis Topology manufactured under license from Threshold corporation.
I also believe the first production year of the PA-5 and PA-7 was 1988.

S1A I'v heard excellent feedback on the Nak PA7AII and the PA5II preamp. The Threshold S500 was mfg from the mid to later 80s, 250 watt x 2, one just sold on Agon for $1350+/-. As others have suggested an amp/preamp from the same mfg sometimes increases the odds that they will work out better than mixing components/mfg. Any change in amps will be given a lot of consideration before I make the move. Since we are talking older preowned it's tough to audition before you purchase unless it's a local seller who will let you audition it in my system which might not be easy to do.

You might be able to listen to some if you find what your looking for.
Stereo Exchange used to sell alot of used high end stuff, and I remember seeing the big Threshold in there, man that thing was BIIIG!
Start checking into stores with good reputations, that sell used top flight stuff. And make arrangements to audition!

i nice gent from NYC is letting me in home audition a brand new bel canto DAC3, now isnt that nice of him... :p cant wait to see what it does in my system-- methinks it will be mindblowing. I have owned 4 bel canto DAC2s through the years and i just cant get enough. What a product. And the DAC3 is supposed to be even better, with the added benefit of usb interface and a volume control. wow.

Scott thanks for the advice re taking a trip to NYC dealers to audition equipment for any future amp purchases. It's about four hours each way but I'd have to live with whatever amp a lot longer than the trip would take. The amps I have are quite good and will work until the right one comes along. Not sure if this issue was brought up re amps for Storm but I have tried to read as many posts on LH as possible that would relate to my JBLs and one thing that impressed me was that certain speakers were "nearfield" and other JBL were intended for larger spaces. I fall into the larger space catergory and the L300 sound better at a distance of roughly twenty feet +/-. To bring the sound that distance without stress or strain a bigger amp seems to work much better in accomplishing the goal. Right now I have a Yamaha PC-2002 pro amp with 240x2 watts powering the L300 and it seems to be a good match so far.

Majick,
Here is a very nice first gen PA-7 a tad north of you. If you were to purchase, and decided you needed more, you won't loose $. This one does look very nice. The dynamic output of this amp into 4ohms is 550 watts per channel. This is stated in the factory lit. The rated output is 200 into 8ohms, dynamic into 8ohms is 300 per channel. If you want all the specs I can PM them to you let me know via PM.

Many people read these forums, and they see what people are buying, what they bought that they rave about, and ebay prices start going up. Not saying its just this forum that is repsonsible, but its a part of it.
6 to 7 years ago, you could pick up vintage JBL and Altec on the bay for CHEEP! People reading these forums, and buying vintage JBL drove the prices up, L300,s started going for crazy money, and coincidentally, forum members were going nutz for L300,s during this time too.
Its great for sellers, not so great for the bargain minded.

It's killing me since I went through 20+ of these in the last 2.2 years, and I had a couple of near new condition ones, with factory boxes. That would put them in the $1500.00 to $1700.00 range easy.......................:(

I think few have a clue as to the depth of that phenomena. Usually goes like;
Seller spews one or more forums with the heavenly nirvana he's acheived with model X, trolling for suckers.
Model X mysteriously appears on conmEbay, sucker maxes out the VISA.
Sucker posts rave reviews because (a)spent so much he won't even admit to self he was fleeced, (b)is too stupid to know the difference, or (c)wants to repeat the process by flipping the junk to another sucker.
"Pro" reviews in magazines are little better, everybody's got a hidden agenda and a hand in your pocket.
Not even sure why I wasted the time to post, sellers are makin' too much to quit, and buyers are too stupid to learn.

What kills me is in that case we reveal what the real retail used prices in all conditions should be, and where it is in value depending on condition and what the gear comes with. So they don't pay attention to what they are reading and drive the price through the roof. But one good thing that comes out of it is it brings the value up in the Blue Book. Because if bought on AudiogoN it all goes in their records for future publications of the Blue Book.

Sourceoneaudio thanks for the heads up on the Nak amp. Spent my allowance last week on a couple of rare Grace Ruby cartridges and the piggy bank is a little low for now. Saw another PA7II for $1050 on the west coast. The Threshold S500 was in NYC and almost "local" for shipping/pickup but sold quickly for around $1350. The Nak is very nice but I think I'll be holding out for a Threshold after I refill the piggy bank.
