802 G vs 808 8a

Hi new member here was wondering i have a pair of 808-8a drivers i use on my system and was wondering if the 802 G with the tangerine phase plug was better. they both have the same magnet 1.2 pound alnico and both have 15.250 goss and same spl at a watt. So dose the 802 with tangerine phase plug have better highs? or should i just keep running my 808 and just add ev t 350 or jbl 077 tweeter for top end? Have been running the 808 with 416-8b in a ported box 12 cuft now for 2 years and love them but think they need a litle more top end. could it be my amp maybe dose not have the top end not the speakers i run a yamaha cr 3020 iam not a expert on audio so any advice would be great thank you.

Yeah, the 'rines add some extension, noticeably so for most folks. If your 808-8As have the Symbiotic 'frams they came with though, there's likely more room for improvement there. Common practice with 808s is to toss the loading caps, and add a felt pad in the cover, ala 802.

Sean----Installing 802-902 type aluminum diaphragms and using a compensation circuit will do more for your high frequencies than a different phasing plug will, I'd do at least the diaphragms.

Hi Tom i have replaced the diaphragms the old one's were the symbiotic but the new one's were done at a local shop here in florida i think they used a cheaper diaphragm. so my friend is mailing me a pair from great plains he bought and never used should have them soon. I also have a after market crossover with these speakers they were cheap $45 bucks a pair should i get some factory altec crossovers would that help?

I have a set up that similar to yours, I've got dual Altec 414-8B woofers(very similar to the 416s except 12") and 806 driver(similiar to 808s, but pre-Tangerine)/811 horn, and last, but not least, an E-V T350 super tweeter per cabinet. Personally, I would keep the symbiotek diaphram and get the E-V T350 or JBL 077 because the horizontal dispersion is much better(BTW: I just noticed that JBL has discontinued the 077/2405H "slot radiator" & 2404H"butt-cheek" super tweeters, there maybe some laying around if you hurry). The sound is incrediable. But replacing the symbiotek diaphram maybe a less expensive solution. The JBL 075 "ring radiator" is still in production and NIB $250 each plus you would also need a crossover network.

Sean---What I would do is use the GPA diaphragms (presuming they are 8 ohm standard aluminum) and make my own Model Nineteen type crossovers. That will give you clear, coherant and extended highs without the formidable problems of integrating a seperate tweeter, tweeters which are often pretty dismal sounding anyway.

Hi moldy i have some diaphragms on the way felt pad in diaphragm cover? mine has no pad did it from the factory? and yes the 416 do great in the 12 cuft ported box was thinking about a backloaded horn like a jensen imperial but my room is to small 12x15 for the bass horns

if they had the symbiotic or pacsalite diaphragms originally, they maybe also had one of the black loading caps too?
