View Full Version : C40 resto, which D130s

Have a set of C40s with 175s(black) and N1200s #s 16777 & 16764(black) they have E130s in them.
I would like to put the right D-130s in them and need help to know what to look for. Which ones would be correct for the C40s? Serial numbers I should look for? Colors? Maybe by the time I get them corrected I will have sold off some of the others and gotten the BOSS off my back and will be able to hold onto them even if I really don't have the room. If nothing else I want to have at least listened to them the way they were designed "back in the day" before they leave.

Thanks, Mike

Before I posted the D130 info request I went all through the library, catalogs and the search function and maybe I still missed it but can't determine what year these cabinets are. Maybe if someone can tell me what year manufacture the N1200s were I can try and work a different angle for an answer on what D130s are correct for these cabinets. These numbers came off one of the horns and drivers, 10382 1217-1290 if that helps with dating. N1200 numbers are in first post.

Am I wasting my time trying to find an answer to this question? Is there a way to determine what went with these cabinets? If I'm wasting good space on this forum with a question no one can answer or it's too much research let me know and I'll wait till someone puts some up for sale and see if they'll get me the numbers off theirs.

Thanks, Mike

The standard 001 system used a 175DLH, the N1200 network, and a 130A woofer (with a copper voice coil and paper dome). The D130 would not be the correct choice if you want an original system.

Is the 175 I have a 175DLH? SN 10382 with 1217-1290 horn

It's confusing in the literature since the 1217-1290 looks bigger when shown by itself but if you look at the 1967 brochure it explains them as the same. When used in combination, the 175/1217-1290 becomes the LE175DLH:

If the 175 says 175 it's a 175. All of the black 175's I have seen have a laminated plastic name badge engraved with the model # & S/N. The LE175's usually have a foil badge, they replaced the 175 in the early 60's. The correct woofer is a 130A, however D130's are sometimes seenin systems when people "upgraded" their systems by adding a horn later, presumably when they saved up for the extra stuff. JBL used to encourage this build-as-you-go plan. In reality, it would probably be hard to tell the difference between the 130A & the D130.

The DLH means Driver-Lens-Horn , the complete package.

130A's seem to be getting harder to buy on ebay. D130's are much more common.

Is there any real difference other than the dust dome? Anyone ever bothered to measure the two? Different cones?

D130 is "Extended Range" with aluminum voice coil. Xmax = 0.76 mm.

130A is "Low Frequency" with copper voice coil. Xmax = 2.03 mm

Thanks. I knew "extended range" since the 130A was never sold as a "full-range" system by itself, but I've blanked on the aluminum vs. copper for fifty years; it just never occurred to me to imagine how the difference would effect it and I was hung-up on the obvious visual difference thinking the dust-dome somehow was the only aspect extending the upper range. Still, I suppose the LE-15s sort of displaced the 130 in the lineup, and so one, and so on. I should know better. I guess an even better question would be if faced with a pair of C40 boxes with the N1200 and the LE175DLH, what driver would be optimum without regard to keeping it original for the sake of ...... whatever? Is the E130 an improvement over the D130? Anything newer that might improve the result?

From what I've read here the E130-8, in addition to not being impedance matched to the horn and crossover is a guitar speaker(correct?) Instead of going for originality what newer speaker would best compilment this horn, crossover and enclosure? I listen to 70's rock mostly and use Sherwood tube equipment.

yours are probably from around 1966
contemporary D130 serial numbers would have been around 70000-80000
contemporary 130A serial numbers would have been around 24000-28000

E140, maybe, if you can't find 130A.

D130 hardly even qualifies as a woofer in my investigations of it.

Hi Mikezcar, hi Glen,

the serial nos of the N1200s are very near to the number 15961 which is confirmed to be from 1962.
Also,..the last 175 were built in early 1963, so it seem to be very sure that 1962 is the date.
If it was a 001 System kit, there was the 130A part of it, built till 1963.

I have a pair of 130As on the shelf that are in excellent working order. I went from this:

You can have the pair for $300 plus shipping and insurance (if so desired) from 92705. I think that the S/Ns may be consecutive (or very close), but can check if you are interested.

OK back on this, a little, what would have been SN's for late 62/early 63 130A's?

Hi Mike,

sorry, there are no fabr. date recordings after 10551 from 1956.
The last stored 130A serial number is 35953 but without known year.
Hope to find out more in the future.
